How does your
media product
represent
particular social
groups?
• My magazine is aimed at the ages 16-20 and is
based around the genre of pop music. To try
and represent this social group I first looked at
the stereotypes these groups of people have.
Which allowed me to have a clear
understanding of this target audience.
• I mainly looked at popular pop magazines which
gave me a great understanding of how to
represent these social groups.
• From looking at all of these magazines I noticed
that they all have dramatic eye make-up and
unique hair-styles. They are also all doing poses
including the hands as it makes them stand out
from the page and look confident.
• The colours used on the first two magazines are very
bright and bold mainly using pinks whereas the on
the left uses quite subtle colours that blend well
together.
• Due to my previous research I have
chosen for my artist to have very big
and curly hair. This hairstyle is very
unique and makes her stand out.
And teenagers today also like to
have their own unique style so I feel
as if I have represented this well.
• I have also chosen for my artist to
wear bold eye-liner, this draws
attention to her eyes and her
looking into the camera also adds
to this effect. The eye-liner is very
representative of this social group as
looking around society today most
girls around this age seem to be
wearing eye-liner so I thought it was
a good idea for the artist too to be
wearing it.
Colour
• I have used a bright purple to
be my themed colour. I chose
this colour as in many pop
magazines a pink as a main
colour is very common. Also as
my target audience is mainly at
girls I thought a purple would be
a great way to attract them as
well as representing them.
• Due to the vast amount of pop
music magazines using a pinky
colour I thought that it was
essential that I too carried on
this expectation.
Social Class
• My magazine is also based at the social grade of
D/E as my selected target audience will mainly be
in education studying and some may have part-
time jobs along side of this.
• Because of the social class of my target audience I
have selected a suitable price which student will be
able to afford. I have also chosen this price due to
my questionnaire where I asked what was the
maximum price you would pay for a music
magazine.
