EDUCATION
Masters with Distinction, MEng Mechanical Engineering with Energy
Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton, Edinburgh, EH14 4AS (2011 – 2016)
Throughout my first three years at university I developed my technical knowledge as a student engineer by
completing the following modules:
Mechanical Engineering Sciences
Mathematics for Engineers
Energy Studies
Computing for Engineers
Electrical Engineering
Business, Safety, Awareness and
Sustainability
Fourth year allowed me to focus on my specific points of interest, including petroleum engineering and
thermodynamics. Fifth year involved completing a Professional and Industrial Studies module, where the
assignments were focussed on meeting the competencies required to obtain chartered status. I also completed a
renewable energy technologies module, and Failure Accident Analysis – in which I learned about forensic
engineering.
Throughout this course I have had the opportunity develop my skills within several computer programmes. I
used Pro/Engineer extensively in fifth year at school, and have carried on using it whilst enhancing my ability
during every year of university. Other programmes that I have used are:
Matlab
Abaqus
Autodesk Inventor
Ansys CFX
The Royal High School, East Barnton Avenue, Edinburgh
2009 – Standard Grades
Maths (1), Physics (1), PE (1), Modern Studies (1), Graphic Communications (1), German (1), English (2), Chemistry
(Intermediate 2 – A)
2010 – Highers
Maths (A), Physics (A), Chemistry (A), Graphic Communications (A), English (B)
2011 – Advanced Highers
Maths (A), Physics (A), Applied Mathematics (A)
RELEVANT ENGINEERING PROJECTS
Designer Toast – Masters Group Project
As part of my Masters degree I completed a group project which spanned the final three semesters of my
studies. The brief was to design a toaster that could toast a variable message or image on to a slice of bread.
My role in the group was to complete any manufacturing that was required for the system, and also to manage
the budget and part procurement. By the end of the project we had developed a toaster that could produce any
message or image on to a piece of toast, within a 12*10 matrix. This was the most involved project I undertook
throughout my time at university, and it was so rewarding to produce a fully functional system after so much
hard work.
2. Design and Manufacture of an Energy Scavenging Device
In my fourth year I completed a major individual project which involved the design and manufacture of a
wearable device that would be used to scavenge energy whilst walking. This project allowed me to be
innovative in the design process in order to overcome difficult challenges. It was very satisfying to have a
functional final product that was designed by myself.
Design of a Heater for a Wetox Process
This was a group project for an industrial client in my fourth year. As a group we had to propose and design a
solution for a heater in a waste water sludge treatment plant. We had to find a suitable solution whilst meeting
the client’s constraints of cost and size. This project allowed me to combine my technical skills in the design
process, with my ability to develop a strong working relationship with an industrial client.
EMPLOYMENT
Graduate Mechanical Engineer, RSP Consulting Engineers, September 2016 – Present
I am currently completing a three month internship with RSP, an opportunity that I sourced myself, being the
first intern the company has ever had. During this time I will be developing my knowledge of the building
services industry, and gaining some valuable experience within an engineering office. I have started working
with AutoCAD and IES, and will also have access to Revit and Hevacomp. My main responsibilities will
involve supporting my team as they work on existing projects. I will also have the opportunity to attend
seminars hosted by outside companies, ensuring that I am up to date with the latest products and regulations in
the industry.
Supermarket Assistant, Waitrose, July 2015 – July 2016
I was part of the Operations team in store. We completed all of the practices required for the store to trade
legally. This includes:
date code checking
completing delivery paperwork
stock checking
displaying promotional materials
temperature checks
The team also possesses the outside phone line, so I was responsible for taking customer calls and directing
them to the correct department. As well as these duties, I helped out on the tills during busy periods in the store.
Careers Service Assistant, Heriot-Watt University Careers Service, May 2015 – July 2015
This was a temporary position within the careers service to assist in the completion of a government required
graduate and leaver survey. I was responsible for contacting the leavers and graduates by phone, taking their
answers to the survey questions, and recording the data accurately.
Customer Assistant, Boots the Chemist, June 2011 – August 2014
I have experience working in three different Boots stores. I worked in the Edinburgh Airport store on a
temporary basis during my summer break from university. The working environment was very busy, which
required me to work efficiently whilst maintaining an excellent level of customer service. I spent over two years
working at one store where I was the only employee on the shop floor during my shifts, with the rest of my co-
workers situated in the dispensary. My duties across all three stores were generally the same, these included:
3. Till work
Customer service
Stock control
Opening and closing the store
Booking in deliveries
Cash handling
I completed my healthcare training in June 2012, which developed my knowledge of the medicinal products in
store, and how they can help the customers. During my time with Boots I received regular positive feedback
through customer service surveys which were handed out in store. Hearing on a regular basis that the customers
I served were happy with the service I provided was very satisfying, and made the job even more enjoyable.
INTERESTS
I was the Captain of the Heriot-Watt University under 21 Team in the 2013 / 2014 season and led the team to
win the league title. I was also involved in the organizational and administration for the team and helped
organize, training, matches and dealings with other teams. This helped ensure the smooth running of the team
and contributed to the team’s success.
