1. WEEK 2 -THINKING
CRITICALLY
ABOUT MEDIA
- The influence of framing in media texts
- Ways in which media products may have
transformed the original events that they are
representing
2. CHARLOTTE CROSBY - 2011-2016
➤ Crosby came to fame after
appearing on the British reality
show Geordie Shore which
follows the lives of a selection of
young adults living in a house
together.
➤ Crosby was represented
negatively in the media during
her time in Geordie Shore, often
labelled as out of control for her
drinking and her frequent nights
out
Charlotte’s Vodka Binges - ‘I downed half a litre a day’
3. CHARLOTTE CROSBY - WEIGHT
ISSUES
➤ The media continued to portray
Crosby in a negative light,
slamming her for being
considered overweight
➤ Language choices such as
‘brand new bodies’ and ‘I’ll
never be fat again’ creates
negative connotations and
spreads the dominant ideology
that all women should be
perfectly thing and not ‘fat’
4. AFTER WEIGHT LOSS
➤ As Crosby lost weight and bought out her own fitness DVD, the
portrayal of her in the media changed - it was more positive about
focused on how she was improving her life
➤ However, as seen in the headlines, despite Crosby loosing weight
there is still a negative spin on each news story such as ‘criticisms
about her bizarre bellybutton’
5. SEX ON TV
➤ Crosby made headlines during her time on Geordie Shore
when it was revealed that she had had sex with fellow
housemate which was then filmed and shown in the program.
➤ Crosby received a considerable amount of backlash from the
general public being labelled as a ‘whore’ or ‘easy’
➤ However, many of the male contestants also had sex on the
show and were not labelled in the same way nor given a
negative reputation and these incidents were often not
reported in the media
6. DIFFERENCE IN REPRESENTATION
The language used
when presenting Gaz is
positive and portrays
his ‘round-up of
beauties’ as an
achievement. The
article also focuses on
how he's moved on
from the party time in
his life (like Charlotte)
however Crosby cannot
seem to get rid of her
negative reputation
associated with Geordie
Shore
7. CROSBY’S REPRESENTATION WITH A
PARTNER
➤ There is a significantly
difference representation of
Crosby when she is single and
going out partying to when she
is engaged to a man and in a
committed relationship.
➤ Links to critical theory and
feminist media studies -
women are represented in a
positive light when they fit
societies expectations - to get
married and settle down
8. THEORIST - FERGUSON - CULT OF
FEMININITY➤ Argued that teenage girls magazines traditionally prepared
girls for feminized adult roles and generated a cult of
femininity.
➤ This included themes like getting and keeping a partner, being
a good wife/partner, keeping a family happy, what to wear,
how to be a good cook and so on.
➤ This reflects the differing way in which Crosby is represented -
when she is following stereotypical feminine expectations she
is portrayed in a better light such as when she is in a
relationship
