TYPES OF TEXT AND COMMON FILE FORMATS
HYPERTEXT
Serve to link different electronic documents and enable users to jump from one
to other in nonlinear way
PLAINTEXT or UNFORMATTED TEXT
Fixed sized characters having essentially the same type of appearance
FORMATTED TEXT
Appearance can be changed using font parameters (bold, underline, italic, font
size, font color, etc.)
WHAT IS A TYPEFACE?
• Also called font, font type, or type
• Refers to the representation or style of a text in the digital
format
• Usually comprised of alphabets, numbers, punctuation
marks, symbol and special characters
5
TYPE OF TYPEFACE
• Serif
• Sans serif
• Slab serif
• Script
• decorative
6
Serif
• A serif is a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter
or symbol within a particular font or family of fonts.
• Connotes formality and readability in large amount of texts. This font is usually used
for the body text of books, newspaper, magazines and research publication
• Also, serif fonts give a classic or elegant look when used for title or heading.
• Example: Times New Roman, Garamond, Baskerville
7
Sans Serif
• Sans serif - brings a clean or minimalist look to the text.
• This font is used for clear and direct meaning of text such as
road signage, building directory or nutrition facts in food
packages.
• Also, sans serif fonts give a modern look and is used primarily
in webpage design.
• Examples: Arial, Helvetica, Tahoma, Verdana, Calibri
8
Slab Serif
• Slab serif- carries a solid or heavy look to text.
• Can be used for large advertising sign on billboards.
• Examples: Rockwell, Playbill, Blackoak

• Script- draws much attention to itself because of its brush-like strokes.
• This must be used sparingly and not to be used in large body text.
• This font is usually used in wedding invitation cards or other formal
events
• TXT (text) -Unformatted text document by an editor as notepad on
Windows platform
• DOC (document)- a native format for storing documents created by MS
Word package contain a rich set of formatting capabilities
• RTF (Rich Text Format)- Cross platform document exchange; default
format for Mac OS X's default editor TextEdit
• PDF (Portable Document Format) -developed by Adobe systems for
cross platform exchange of documents, supports image and graphics
• PS (PostScript)- a page description language used mainly for desktop
publishing

TEXT FILE FORMATS
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
AND ELEMENTS
EMPHASIS
• importance or value given to a part
of the text-based content
• make the text bold
• Italicized
• have a heavier weight
• darkened or lightened
• enlarged
11
APPROPRIATENESS
• how fitting or suitable the text is used for a specific audience, purpose
or event.
• Times New Roman
• Arial
• Aharoni
• Rockwel
12
PROXIMITY
• refers to how near or how far are the text elements from each other.
ALIGNMENT
• refers to how the text is positioned in the page. left, right, center or
justified.
13
ORGANIZATION
• refers to a conscious effort to organize the different text elements in a
page.
REPETITION
• Concerns consistency of elements and the unity of the entire design
14
CONTRAST
• creates visual interest to text elements.
• is achieved when two elements are different from each other.
• white text on a dark background
• large font with a small font serif and sans serif
• thin elements with wide elements
• cool color and warm color
15
VISUAL MEDIA
AND INFORMATION
VISUAL
MEDIA
INFORMATION
• materials, programs,
applications and the
like that teachers and
students use to
formulate new
information to aid
learning through the
use, analysis,
evaluation and
production of visual
images
TYPES
OF MEDIA
•Photography
•Video
•Screenshots
•Infographics
•Data visualization
(Charts and Graphs)
•Comic strips/
Cartoons
•Memes
PURPOSE OF
VISUAL
INFORMATION
•Gain Attention
•Create Meaning
•Facilitate Retention
VISUAL DESIGN
ELEMENTS
VISUAL DESIGN ELEMENTS
1. Line - describes a shape or outline. It can create texture and can
be thick or thin. Lines may be actual, implied, vertical, horizontal,
diagonal, or contour lines
2. Shape - usually a geometric area that stands out from the space
next to or around it, or because of differences in value, color, or
texture
3. Value - the degree of light and dark in a design. It is the contrast
between black and white and all the tones in between.
4. Texture - the way a surface feels or is perceived to feel. Texture
can be added to attract or repel interest to a visual element.
5. Color - determined by its hue (name of color), intensity (purity of
the hue), and value (lightness or darkness of hue)
6. Form - a figure having volume and thickness
VISUAL
DESIGN
PRINCIPLES
• Consistency of margins, typeface,
typestyle, and colors is necessary
• Center of interest an area that first
attracts attention in a composition.
This area is more important when
compared to the other objects or
elements in a composition.
• Balance - a feeling of visual equality
in shape, form, value, color. Balance
can be symmetrical and evenly
balanced, or asymmetrical and
unevenly balanced.
• Harmony - brings together a
composition with similar units.
VISUAL
DESIGN
PRINCIPLES
If for example your composition was using wavy lines
and organic shapes, you would stay with those types
of lines and not put in just one geometric shape
• Contrast - offers some change in value creating a
visual discord in a composition. Contrast shows
the difference between shapes and can be used as
a background to bring objects out and forward in a
design
• Directional Movement - a visual flow through
the composition. It can be the suggestion of
motion in a design as you move from object to
object by way of placement and position
• Rhythm - a movement in which some elements
recur regularly. Like a dance, it will have a flow of
objects that will seem to be like the beat of music
• Perspective - created through the arrangement
of objects in two dimensional space to look like
they appear in real life

Lines may be actual, implied, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or contour lines 2. Shape - usually a geometric area that stands out from the space next to or around it, or because of differences in value, color, or texture 3. Value - the degree of light and dark in a design. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between. 4. Texture - the way a surface feels or is perceived to feel. Texture can be added to attract or repel interest to a visual element. 5. Color - determined by its hue (name of color), intensity (purity of the hue), and value (lightness or darkness of hue) 6. Form - a figure having volume and thickness
  • 22. VISUAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES • Consistency of margins, typeface, typestyle, and colors is necessary • Center of interest an area that first attracts attention in a composition. This area is more important when compared to the other objects or elements in a composition. • Balance - a feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color. Balance can be symmetrical and evenly balanced, or asymmetrical and unevenly balanced. • Harmony - brings together a composition with similar units.
  • 23. VISUAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES If for example your composition was using wavy lines and organic shapes, you would stay with those types of lines and not put in just one geometric shape • Contrast - offers some change in value creating a visual discord in a composition. Contrast shows the difference between shapes and can be used as a background to bring objects out and forward in a design • Directional Movement - a visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object by way of placement and position • Rhythm - a movement in which some elements recur regularly. Like a dance, it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music • Perspective - created through the arrangement of objects in two dimensional space to look like they appear in real life
