2. A school year in England consists of three terms. They have to
start the school in September, whereby each school has its
own term dates.
The schools generally begin their lessons in the first two
weeks of September. After half the teaching period,
approximately 6 weeks, pupils have their first holiday, which is
referred to as “half term“.
During this time the school must be closed, and the children
generally go home, or stay with their guardian. If there is no
private contact for the child in UK, the school is usually
prepared to provide assistance and arrange a personal
contact, for example, a guest family.
3. Children can also be invited by their English classmates to
spend the holidays with them. The first term continues until
mid-December. Then the children travel home to spend the
winter holidays with their families (approx. 3 weeks).
The second term starts at the beginning of January and
finishes at the end of March. There is a one-week half-term
holiday in February.
After three weeks of holidays, the third and final period of
the school year begins in the middle of April. This ends at
the end of June or the beginning of July. After that the
children have their summer holidays during the months of
July and August.
4. A school year in Spain consists of three terms. In Spain
children start school in the second or third week of
September.
On December 23 there is a holiday that usually last until 8
January to celebrate Christmas. The school must be closed
during this time. You can do homework to don’t forget what
you have learned.
For Easter there are other holidays that last 2 weeks. Children
can visit their family. And finally, in June there´re the last
holidays which are the longest, lasting from June to mid-
September.
5. RULES
Children must go to school between 5 and 16 years old. They
start school after their fourth birthday.
Children must go to school between 6 and 16 years old. Most
children start school with 3 years old or sometimes with 2.
6. SCHOOL HOURS
Classes usually start at 08:45 and finish at 15:00, with a break for
lunch at 12:00 (although when it depends on each school). There is
also a break mid-morning, so children can play in the schoolyard.
In Spain, children often start school between 8 or 9 am. They have a
break between 11 or 12, lasting 30 minutes and usually end between
2 or 2: 30 pm. Some school end early because they have classes in
the afternoon.
In our case, we started at 8:15 in the morning, have a break 3o
minutes at 11:15 and ended at 2:45 pm.
7. UNIFORMS
Most schools don´t require school uniform, but some do. The most
common uniforms are: grey skirt or trousers with a white shirt and a
red, blue or green jacket. You can buy them in shops, supermarket
and schools. The are cheap.
In Spain, in the most public schools wear children clothes they want,
it is in private schools where children should wear uniforms.
8. STAGES
NURSEY
Many children from 2 ½ years and up to 4 years old attend
preschool classes, which are not mandatory. There aren´t
school curriculum at this level, although there are a number of
learning objectives desirably be met.
PRIMARY EDUCATION
Primary education in England is given to children aged 5 to 11
years old. This is divided into several Key Stages (KS) or
stages, within which are the different courses, which are
known as Years.
9. SECONDARY EDUCATION
Among 11 to 16 year old children attend secondary schools. The
state secondary schools are required to follow the National
Curriculum, while independent schools are not for secondary
education.
10. SIXTH FORM
Within the Secondary Education, after 16 years of age and after
passing the GCSE, students can choose to continue their studies
two years. This type of education given between 16 and 18 years
of age. It is known as Sixth Form, the first year Lower Sixth
(where students study to pass exams AS level), and the second
Upper Sixth year (where students study to pass exams a level -
Adavanced LEVEL-), based in 3 subjects, generally, and marking
the route to college (depending on the grades obtained in these
tests).
11. CHILDREN'S EDUCATION
It extends to the 6 years of the child and is organized in two
cycles: to 3 years and 3 to 6 years. Although this step is not
mandatory, the educational nature of this period and its
contribution to physical and personal development of the
school child is recognized.
In Spain there are public and private kindergartens. Parents
must pay a registration fee and tuition, which is subsidized, in
the case of public kindergartens price. In private, the rate
varies considerably from one center to another and also
according to the province. On average, you could say the price
of a nursery can range between 400 and 600 euros per
month. There may be even more onerous nurseries, if they
offer more exclusive educational and recreational services or
extended hours (to 10 hours) for the convenience of parents.
12. PRIMARY EDUCATION
It consists of six academic courses, organized in three cycles
of two years each, ranging from 6 to 12 years old student,
distributed as follows:
First cycle: first and second grades (6-8 years).
Second stage: third and fourth grades (8-10 years).
Third cycle: fifth and sixth grade (10-12 years).
SECONDARY EDUCATION (ESO)
It extends for four years after primary education stage. The
student begins this stage at age 12 and ends at 16.
It is divided into two cycles of two years each, as follows:
• First cycle: 1 E.S.O. and 2nd E.S.O. (12-14 years)
• Second stage: 3rd E.S.O. and 4th E.S.O. (14-16 years)
13. SIXTH FORM
It is the last stage of secondary education, is voluntary and
lasts two courses (1st and 2nd of Baccalaureate), usually
between 16 and 18 years old of the student.
14. WEEKENDS
On Saturday mornings there are normally lessons, and in the
afternoon a full programme of sport and other free-time
activities is provided. Sundays are exclusively for relaxation.
Art rooms, computer rooms and sports facilities are generally
open on Sundays.
In Spain, on Saturday children do their homework and study
and the rest of the day they relax or do other activities like go
shopping or play football. On Saturday, children ought to
complete their homework and study if they don´t have
finished already. In the morning some go to church and later
they can make other things.
