2. A linking verb
It is a traditional term for a type of verb
(as a way of being or looking)
That unites the subject of a sentence with a word or
phrase that says something about the subject.
For example, it functions as a linking verb for the phrase
"The boss is unhappy."
Two Types of Linking
Verbs
They can be semantically
divided into two types:
• Those like being that refer to a
current state: appear, feel, stay,
seem, sound
• Those that indicate a result of
some kind: turn around, get wet
(get wet), go (bad); grow up (grow
old); become (unpleasant).
Examples and
observations of linking
verbs
The forms of the verb ser (be)
are generally linking
verbs:am,is,are,was,were
• The rose looks pretty |
Anna looks at the rose.
• The pillow felt soft | I felt
the pillow
• Maria might have been forthcoming
with the news.
• Tom acted nervous when the teacher
found the note.
