Production and
Operations Management
Eddy Purnomo
NIM 2210632020010
In various business organizations throughout the earth, every day always
produces a variety of goods and services in various forms and types. In
the process of producing goods and services, it certainly requires certain
techniques and methods to run effectively and efficiently.
PRODUCTION AND
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
ACCORDING TO 5 EXPERTS
3
1. SOFYAN ASSAURI (2004: 1)
The factors of production in economics are land, capital, labor
and skills (organizational and managerial skills).
2. HEIZER DAN RENDER (2011: 4)
Production and operations management is a series of
activities that create goods and services through the change
from inputs to outputs that occur in all organizations.
3. WYSOCKY (2000: 1)
Operations management is the design, operation, and
development of systems that lead to the main objectives of
goods and services companies in combination.
4. HERJANTO (2008:20)
Production and operations management is a process that
continuously and effectively uses management functions to
integrate various resources efficiently in order to achieve goals
5. HANDOKO (1999: 3)
Production and operations management is an optimal
management effort, the use of resources (or often called
factors of production), labor, machinery, equipment, raw
materials and so on in the process of transforming raw
materials and labor into various products or services
PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS
MANAGEMENT IS THE EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT
AND OPTIMAL MANAGEMENT OF VARIOUS
RESOURCES TO PRODUCE GOODS OR
SERVICES.
PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS
MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
Election
Strategic decisions concerning the selection of processes through which various goods or services
will be produced or provided
Design
Tactical decisions concerning the creation of methods of carrying out a productive operation.
Operation
Long-term output level planning decisions or demand forecast basis and short-term job scheduling
and staffing decisions.
Supervision
Procedures involving taking corrective action in operations for the production of goods or supply of
services.
Update
Implementation of improvements in production systems based on changes in demand for
organizational, technological and management objectives
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN PRODUCTION AND
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
Operations management is the practice of the field of business administration in creating the
maximum possible level of efficiency in an organization.
Production Management
Production Management is an arrangement of the process of converting raw materials into the
desired product (goods or services) so that it has a selling value.
Operation Management
OVERVIEW
Basis for Comparison Production management Operation management
Means
Production Management connotes the
administration of the various activities involved
in product creation.
Operations Management refers to
that part of management that is
concerned with the production and
delivery of goods and services.
Decision-making Related to the production aspect.
Associated with regular business
activities.
Found in The Industry where the production takes place.
Banks, Hospitals, Companies
including production companies,
Agents, etc.
Objective
To produce the right quality goods in the right
quantity at the right time and at the least cost.
To take advantage of resources,
wherever possible to meet
customer desires.
KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRODUCTION
AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
1.Production Management can be defined as the administration of a series of activities related to
the creation of goods or the transformation of raw materials into finished goods. In contrast,
Operations Management is used to mean the management branch that deals with the
administration of both the production of goods and the provision of services to customers.
2. In production management, managers have to make decisions regarding the design, quality,
quantity and cost of products produced by the department. On the other hand, the scope of operations management
is bigger as compared to production management in which operations manager takes care of product design, quality,
quantity, process design, location, manpower required, storage, maintenance, logistics, inventory management,
waste management, etc
KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRODUCTION
AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
3. Production Management can only be found in companies where the production of goods is carried out. Unlike that,
one can find operations management in every organization i.e. manufacturing concerns, service oriented companies,
banks, hospitals, agencies etc.
4. The basic goal of production management is to provide the right quality goods in the right quantity at the right time
and at the best price. On the other hand, operations management aims at making the best possible use of
organizational resources, to fulfill customer desires
SUMMARY
Production and Operations Management are closely
related, so it is quite difficult to differentiate between the
two. Production management includes managing all
activities involved in the production process. On the other
hand, operations management involves all the activities
involved in the production of goods and delivery of services
such as material management, quality management,
maintenance management, process management,
process design, product design and so on.
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY AND
NON MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Functions

Production Cost
Production Process
Marketing and Sales
CIRP 1983
Manufacturing Industry is a series of
activities that include a product
design, selection of goods, planning,
manufacturing, quality assurance,
management and also sales carried
out by the industry.
Characteristics
FINANCIAL RECORDING OF
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Production Cost
The main financial recording in
manufacturing companies is realized in
production costs absorbed through the
production process consisting of raw
material costs, work, and factory overhead
costs (BOP).
Production Price
Calculation
Cost of Goods Sold
Production price is the calculation of the
cost of using raw materials, labor
materials, and factory overload attached to
a product.
The cost of goods sold is a calculation of
production costs and other costs absorbed
in semi-finished, finished products, and the
initial inventory value of the product is
reduced by the final inventory value of the
product.
EXAMPLES MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Along with the emergence of global warming
problems and fuel scarcity, now vehicle
manufacturers are competing to create hybrid
vehicles and electric motorcycles
Electric motorcycles powered by batteries will likely
use much of the space needed to house those
batteries. The engine itself will probably be slightly
smaller. In one model, the “Gesit", the engine is
about the size of an alternator, and mounted low on
the chassis just in front of the rear wheels. A chain
and sprocket connect the motor directly to the rear
wheels.
The government is incentivizing electric motorcycles
at IDR 7 million per unit for locally produced electric
motorcycles, with a minimum TKDN of 40 percent.
NON MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Functions
Marketing Function
Administrative and General
Functions
Financial Function
Marketing and Sales
Non-manufacturing industry is a
Industry whose main role is only to
sell and buy goods to others for profit.
Characteristics
NON MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Bank
Gilarso: Bank is a financial institution
whose main business is to raise funds,
provide credit or loans and services.
Supplier Service Industry
Phillip Kotler, a service Industry is a Industry
that offers products that are intangible, but
the benefits can be felt. Transactions in
service companies do not transfer
ownership.
Fauzi (2004), supplier is a Industry or
individual that provides the resources
needed by companies and competitors to
produce certain goods and services.
SUMMARY
7/1/20XX
Manufacturing Industry's role is to convert unfinished
materials into finished goods so that they have a selling
value, while a non-manufacturing Industry's main role is
to sell and buy goods to others for profit.
