4. The previous slides show stereotypical conventions within all thrillers. I think we have managed to subvert
to many of these. Challenging the stereotypical conventions within our thriller, I think has made it a little
more interesting, for example. We cast the lead character to be a young, independent female, as we show
her moving into her own house, she is on her own, unpacking which challenges the stereotype of woman
being being very vulnerable and weak. We have shown this by conveying that she has bought a house on
her own, she doesn’t need any help with moving in. however as the opening progresses we sort of
succumb to the stereotypical conventions of a female victim due to her becoming scared of what she finds.
We hear heavy breathing along with distressed facial expressions, showing her weakness.
We also changed the stereotypical light clothing to black clothing, subverting to the pureness and
vulnerability of female victims.
I think that if we were to compare our thriller opening to a real thriller, it would
be Sinister as it has many of the conventions that we use. Within this scene we
see the moving boxes, in which we were inspired to incorporate this into our
thriller opening so, we decided to also add in some boxes. As seen below. I think
that this really enhances the idea of the fact that she is a strong, individual
moving in on her own.
Within this shot from Sinister we see a moving in van, which
enhances that the family is moving into the house in the
background. Due to us not having access to a moving in van
we decided that we would add in a for sale sign in the frame
to capture the same effect that the van would have had
within Sinister, but it also creates a link with the film when it
comes to evaluating it. Within Mise En Scene our setting
closely relate to Sinister due to the house and the garden
type setting, however we have shots of the front and then
of the cellar instead of the garden.
5. I think that we would have to rate the film as a 12, due to there not being
any violence or sexual scenes, however we targeted our audience to be
within the age range of 20-40 years old. I think that due to the feedback
that we received, our opening would capture the eye of any one in that
age range. I don’t think that it would be overly scary for anyone under
the age that we aimed it for, however due to it being a psychological
thriller we aimed it for an older audience.
Derrickson's film succeeds in delivering an
exceptionally engaging, and frightening, movie
experience with quality characters, a smart story,
and plenty of scares.
Sinister review.
We were inspired by the film Would you rather for clothing
design and also lead role. She wears quite dark clothing in the
film, which subverts to the stereotypical clothing choice for a
female victim in a thriller. Her character also subverts from
stereotypical victim as she is very strong and although is injured
throughout the film, she overcomes the evilness of the people
within the house and wins the game, escapes and wins the
money. Although our thriller doesn’t base itself on a similar
storyline, the victims are very similar in mannerisms.
