2. 1894
The first issue of the ‘Billboard’
magazine was printed (wasn’t well-
known until 1936).This was the
original music magazine.
3. 1926
In 1926 ‘Melody Maker’ published it’s
first ever edition of it’s magazine.This
was the first ever music magazine. It
was published in the UK. It focused on
jazz originally and then rock later on.
4. 1952
NME (‘New Musical Express’) was
published for the first time in the UK.
It included the first singles chart. It’s
genre was focused on punk rock.
5. 1967
In 1967 the ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine
was launched. It had articles about
music and social change as well as
political concerns about music.This
music magazine was different as it
contained information more about
the culture of music, rather than new
information.
6. 1978
In 1978, ‘Smash Hits’ was released.
This was the first music magazine
which was aimed typically at
teenagers.This was important as it
was the first magazine to be released
which was a genre-specific magazine
– which was pop.
7. 1980
In 1980 ‘The Face’ was launched.This
was a monthly magazine which was
colourful but aimed at an older
audience.This brand also focused on
fashion and lifestyle as well as music.
8. 1981
Kerrang was released.This music
magazine was purely devoted to rock
music. In the UK, it is still extremely
popular today.
9. Today
In modern day society, music
magazines are still widely available
and are still bought by many people.
However, due to new technologies,
music magazines are decreasing in
popularity and one day they will be
no longer in existent as a print
product.
