2. 1960’s The history of Indie Music dates long back in 1960′s. There immerged some bands like "Velvet Underground” However bands like these sold very few records. In the early 2000s, a new group of bands that played a stripped down and back-to-basics version of guitar rock, emerged into the mainstream. 2000’s Indie music took a stiff growth in 1980s. In this period a new form of music immerged known as "alternative music", which was a group formed out of distortion of garage bands. The 1990’s brought changes to the alternative rock scene. Grunge bands such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains also punk revival bands like Green Day and The Offspring also became popular and were grouped under the "alternative" umbrella. In the mid-1980’s , the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on post-punk labels rather than the labels themselves. The indie rock scene in the US was prefigured by the college rock that dominated college radio playlists which included key bands like R.E.M from the US and The Smiths from the UK. 5. The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a popular music publication in the United Kingdom, published weekly since March 1952. It was firstly a music newspaper, but became a magazine in 1998. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in the 14 November 1952 edition. In the 1970s it became the best-selling British music newspaper. During the period 1972 to 1976 it became closely associated with punk rock.
6. Spin magazine was founded in 1985. At the start of the magazine was noted for the wide range of music it covered with an emphasis on ‘college-oriented rock’ music and a little of hip-hop. Spin magazines continues to have well known bands on the covers of their magazines.
