Social Protests And Its Impact On Society
Over the past centuries, social protests have played a key part in American society. Throughout these past recent one hundred years there have been
social protests for gender equality, racial equality, voting rights, education rights, and human rights. As society is evolving, social protesting has
become a major part of our lifestyle among younger and older generations, and are beginning to happen quiet frequently. With these constant protests,
like the Black Lives Matter Movement and the Anti–Abortion Movement, comes the ever present issue of violence and non–violence, and whether
violence in protests is beneficial or completely unnecessary. In order for a protest to be effective, a non–violence approach is necessary, because
violence diverts attention away from the main claims of the social protests themselves. Violence can be defined in many different ways. The Oxford
Dictionary defines violence to be "behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something". However, I don't
necessarily agree with this definition entirely. I believe violence is a combination of acts against someone or something that induces physical, mental,
and emotional pain and suffering. This means that violence doesn't always have to be physical. Violence can be abusive words and threats, that used
consistently can harmfully damage someone's mentality and emotions. In many instances where violence in protests have occurred, physical force is
usually the main source

Protest Movement
Upon hearing the terms the Exodus, the Protestant Reformation, the March on Washington, Bed–In for Peace, Ferguson, and the Arab Springs, the
same emotion is triggered among anyone who understands their significance. Perhaps because in spite of their inherent differences and motivations, all
of these protests possess one similar aspect; they are actions intended to preserve basic human rights. And despite the inherent differences in the way
each and every individual is raised and taught, most individuals comprehend the importance of defending what they believe to be morally and/or
socially acceptable. History shows again and again that the heroes of children's storybooks are still in existence when humans continually come

The Catholic Church began with the birth of Jesus Christ in the first century A.D. and remained virtually intact until people felt that its teachings and
practices were focused on tradition and monetary values, rather than religious values ("The Reformation"). The Reformation sought to amend the
corrupted practices of the church by empowering peasants with the hope of achieving priesthood, which was forbidden by the Catholic Church. In the
span of three years, Luther's reform, Protestantism, quickly became the state religion in three separate regions. Luther and his "95 Theses" were not
only successful, but also able to utilize a protest's most potent weapon– the promise of

Martin Luther King's policy of peaceful protest was important because it led to public sympathy of the way black Americans were treated by white
Americans an example of this would be the Birmingham campaign (1963), Kennedy said he was sickened by the images of violence and the soviet
media used 1/5 of their time to broadcast on it. Other campaigns that where peaceful and effective which were set up or supported by king include The
Selma campaign, Montgomery Bus Boycott, the march on Washington, the Birmingham campaign, king supported freedom rides. Some campaigns
failed through peaceful protest such as the Albany movement as Laurie Pritchett stopped media attention by treating the protestors with respect. Kings

The march on Washington showed that the different civil rights campaign groups could work together such as SNCC, NAACP, SCLC, and CORE
also it showed that all of the different civil rights groups had united goals and methods. This shows that if the aims were achievable and the correct
amount of planning had been used then the policy of peaceful protest was a successful policy. However if the aims were not achievable and there
wasn't much planning the policy of peaceful protest wouldn't work and example of this is The Albany Movement; this didn't work because the aims
were too broad and the planning wasn't good enough Laurie Pritchett didn't respond to the civil rights campaigners so they needed to target places that
would react violently; they did learn from their mistakes though because in the Birmingham campaign it worked better. Other campaigns that King
either supported or led include the Greensboro sit–ins, the Freedom Riders and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Greensboro sit–ins were not lead by
King but they were supported by him, the Greensboro sit–ins showed black Americans economic power because the restaurant lost 20% of its predicted
profits also it spread fast and desegregated shops; the policy of peaceful protest worked well because nothing failed/went wrong in the sit–ins. The
Freedom riders showed co–operation because CORE, SNCC and

The National Protest Movement
Protest movements are very important in order to accomplish humanity's progressions by creating revolution. Protests are common throughout history
because they arise from the desire to improve. The word protest is often confused with the word riot, which gives it a negative connotation aside from
protest's actual peaceful nature. In reality, protests brings major changes to the entire community and shapes the world. Many protests are not well
known, but together add up to become a more popular movement. This is why freedom to protest is the first amendment. There are multiple examples
of protest, each with their own reasons, but all were made to change society. Professor Piven says protests make a big impact on a worldly scale rather
than just the targeted community. With an abundance of technology readily available to improve travel and communication, news can spread quickly
throughout the entire world. When Piven says, "I say that we are in the middle of a protest movement –a worldwide protest movement," she is referring
to that global connection technology allows for (Piven, 2012). An example of a protest that turned into a national movement would be the Ferguson
Protests. In 2012, Trayvon Martin, a black unarmed teen, was shot by patrolling guard, George Zimmerman.(CNN,...show more content...
"Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for
demise," founder Alicia Garza states (Garza, 2014). The movement spread through social media and protests were held all over the nation. " We've
connected people across the country working to end the various forms of injustice impacting our people. We've created space for the celebration and
humanization of Black lives," Garza says as her movement becomes more popular(Garza,

The Benefits Of Peaceful Protest
Peacefully protesting to show support of a cause is not harmful to society. In the past, it has been a technique simply to show you feel that your
situation, a law or a proposition is not justified, in your eyes. Protesting in that way does not damage society, however protests too often escalate to
anger and violence, diminishing the validity of the cause being demonstrated.
Peaceful protest can be an effective and beneficial way to make a point about how many in a population feel strongly about an issue, yet many
protests do not go as intended. The idea is to calmly make your opinion known, to get noticed and to demonstrate the sheer mass of opposition to a
particular topic. Peaceful protest alone is not harmful, it is simply a group of people...show more content...
Violent protest is divisive – it turns citizens away from seeing reason in your stance, costs taxpayers money for police protection and control and
drives people strongly to one side or the other of the issues protested. The reason that protests are often seen as dangerous is because they can turn
sour as the result of people using this power and ability to demonstrate as a reason to injure and destroy, often without any connection to the original
protested topic. Protesters have been known to break shop windows, throw bricks at cars and even injure or kill one another in extreme situations.
Peacekeepers attempting to protect the citizens and prevent escalation are often vilified and presented as brutalizing peaceful protesters.
As an example, the Women's March was held at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The
March was billeted by some as a backlash against the election of President Trump, as serving notice that America will not cower in the face of bigotry.
The turnout dwarfed that of Trump's inauguration ceremony. It seemed as though the "liberal Left" spent so much time lecturing Trump supporters on
the importance of accepting the election outcome, but when the results weren't what they expected, Democrats were first shocked, then threw a
metaphorical temper

Right Way To Protest Essay
When I think of protesting, I think of activists who want to make and see a change being made on a specific social issue. In regards to the "right"
way to protest, I believe that less is more and simply getting together in a civilized matter is much more effective than causing chaos in the streets.
Everybody handles things differently and some might find that being lawful is not the way to protest but in my point of view, I believe that risking you
life or breaking the law is definitely not the way to get your voice heard clearly.
In regards to protesting that blocks a freeway, I do not believe that it is a legitimate form of protesting. The reason being that 1) even though our First
Amendment right protects freedom of speech, it is against the law to disobey traffic laws. 2) There must be enough space on the sidewalk or freeway
entrance to allow the safe movement of traffic without putting the protester or...show more content...
This form of protest focuses on disrupting the peace and damaging property, whether it be personal or government belongings. Vandalism, such as
graffiti, is an act of public disturbance caused by a social activists who wants to generate awareness of issues and to influence people's thoughts. I
believe that this is not a form of protest because it does not bring awareness to an issue but instead causes more chaos to the individuals involved.
When someone damages someone else's property, it is extremely violating and eventually will make that particular social group look bad. If you are
vandalizing property on behalf of a movement or campaign, then you are therefore a representation of what your group believes in. For example,
when someone riots and vandalizes someone's property because they are angry is against the law and overall it just puts the person doing the criminal
act back a couple of steps in spreading their message

Peaceful Protest Essay
In the past few years, protest movements have surged across the United States. Various issues, thought to have been resolved, have explosively
re–entered political discourse. In light of these demonstrations and their outwardly unsubstantial effect, many have begun questioning the purpose of
peaceful protest. The majority of the issues being rallied against still exist, after all. However, civil disobedience is needed to preserve the well–being of
any free society, including America. Due tononviolent resistance, individuals are able to diversify perspectives, preserve their integrity, and resist a
pernicious self–satisfaction in a nation's progress. Firstly, civil disobedience promotes the free exchange of ideas that a well–informed and...show more

It is too easy to assume that all is well, that all are treated equally, that America is truly the land of the free. Accepting a facade of perfection is much
simpler than confronting injustices. With nonviolent protest, however, that facade is not allowed to persist. Many spokespeople, in reaction to the
outcry against Trump's controversial actions, have dismissed violent and nonviolent objectors as restless troublemakers. While that may be true of the
violent protestors, that argument implies that peaceful protest is inherently an unworthy pursuit because it upsets the serenity of a free society. I beg to
differ: it is because protest disrupts the social order that it is so greatly needed. Without protest, we are lulled into the trap of security. We begin to think
that endorsing outlawed torture tactics, attacking the free press, and violating the First Amendment is normal – and morality suddenly diminishes in
importance. Yet, by protesting, we are able to resist the temptation of normalization and abetting unjust practices, and we instead make a change for the
better, as witnessed in a federal judge's nationwide block of the Muslim ban within a week of its implementation, following nationwide demonstrations
(NPR, 2017). Though this is certainly a step forward, the block is not the end of this

The Right To Protest Essay
Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts the laws of a free society. It shows the government the laws which are being passed are disagreeing
with the citizens it affects. The right to protest is weaved into the Constitution and the Forefathers wanted a nation of people who stand up for what
they believe in. Peaceful protests can reverse the law which had been passed. As there is a new President is in the Oval Office, it means new laws
and policies are instilled throughout the nation. As outrageous as the laws and policies may be, it is up to Congress whether it should be passed or
vetoed. To this day, President Trump could possibly be the most unorthodox president in the history of theUnited States; he does not favor certain races
and is a very hateful man in power....show more content...
Citizens of the United States have been protesting on the behalf of the citizens of these countries because before our country was recognized as a
nation, people came from other countries to help it thrive and eventually become a nation. The United States was founded and built upon immigrants,
so for President Trump to halt immigrants to enter the country is similar to unfasten a future for the United States. The ForeFathers saw protest as a
right of every citizen, "Right of the people to alter or abolish any government and institute a new one that would better secure their safety and
happiness"(Mirkins p. 61). The right of every United States citizen is to change and eliminate any government and establishment to ensure a more
secure and jovial future for the United States and its citizens. These protests show President Trump is not favored for banning an entire religion from
the U.S. The one of the reasons settlers came the North America was the freedom of religion. It can possibly reverse Trump's decision to ban Muslims
and not have an entire religion hate the United

Arguments Against Protests
Is there not a better way to protest America's problems without protesting America? Given that the First Amendment allows us to protest our grievances
we should be allowed to take a knee during the national anthem if we feel it's necessary. The again, there are other ways to protest our country's
problems without protesting the United States, so people with a higher status should not take advantage of the status to protest.
For example, these idols are losing viewers. In Article 1 it mentions "a recent poll found Kaepernick to be the most disliked NFL player". This shows
he needs a better solution to the problem then kneeling during the Star Spangled Banner to solve these issues. In addition, America has no called these
issues. Also in Article

Essay On Peaceful Protest
A very debatable topic circulating in today's society is whether or not peaceful protest is considered to be effective. Peaceful protest is a form of
nonviolent resistance to express one's disapproval or dislike through an action and/or statement without using violence to do so. Most people in today's
society do not know how to protest peaceably. Most protests today, as many protests in the past, either begin or end in violence. Peaceful protest is
not effective in today's society for multiple reasons, but the biggest one is because most people do not like to stop and listen to what others have to
say before they react. The first Amendment says that we have the right to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of
grievances (Bill of Rights). Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Now, there is nothing wrong in having an ordinance which requires a permit for a parade.
But such an ordinance becomes unjust when it is used to maintain segregation and to deny citizens the first amendment privilege of peaceful assembly
and protest" (Stanley 100). There are times when peaceful protest has been used and was effective. For example, the majority of the protests lead by
Martin Luther King Jr. wielded positive results for their movement. For instance, the Montgomery bus boycott was a protest against racial segregation
on the public transit system in Montgomery, Alabama (Andrew Mach). The protest ended with the removal of "white only" and "black only" signs in
downtown

Protesting Protest Against Police Brutality
There has been a great uproar between Americans protesting against police brutality. Many Americans, black and white believe we should protest
against them and then there are others who believe we should not. The majority of Americans who protest against them are blacks. They believe police
are only here to harm everyone, but I believe differently. I believe we should stop protesting against police brutality because it is causing to many riots
in cities. Police officers shouldn't all be categorized as a bunch of brutal men and women trying to cause harm to everyone. If anyone is brutal it's the
protesters. First let's discuss how this situation came about. Why are there protests against police brutality? Most of everyone has heard of the 2014
Ferguson protest. This protest was to find justice for a young man named Michael Brown. Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white male police
officer, Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014. According to writer German Lopez, Wilson claimed Brown was not being cooperative and charged at him.
Eyewitnesses claim differently. According to an eyewitness Brown surrendered, but that still did not keep Wilson from firing his gun. Brown had
committed a robbery earlier that day and Wilson recognized him, which is the reason Wilson pulled him over. Unfortunately, there was not enough
evidence for the grand jury and the Department of Justice to file any charges against Darren Wilson. (Lopez). This created a big uproar for the
community and most

Nonviolent Protest Essay
There is a lot of discussion about how to handle social change through nonviolent protest and passive resistance. The people who agree with this idea,
such as the citizens in South Africa who followed the practice of satyagraha. Since they followed in their leader, Mohandas Karamch and Gandhi, they
stood their ground and applied the "non– cooperation movement".Which is becoming self– reliant and also not supporting British products. However,
there are also strong arguments against this. For example, the British authorities saw Gandhi's protest as civil obedience. In conclusion, I think
Gandhi's way of handling social change is more effective, because as stated in the reading that many civil right leaders were inspired and his teachings

Causes Of Violent Protest
violent 1. One of the violent protest was held in Birmingham, Alabama and was put together by Martin Luther King Jr. and others. The sheriff, Bull
Connor, dealt with the crazy environment by using fire hoses and police dogs. African Americans were beaten and Martin Luther was arrested. 2.
Martin Luther and others held a "non–violent" protest near Selma, Alabama. Around six hundred marchers were marching for rights, where state and
local lawmen attacked them with billy clubs and tear gas. 3. The Watts riot was a very violent protest in the civil rights movement history. An
African–American was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. An argument broke out and then increased into a fight. 4. During the Rochester Race
Riot four died, three hundred fifty people were injured, and one thousand arrested. This riot was caused because it is believed that police were
brutality against black. 5. 1968 Chicago riots were one of the most violent protest in in the civil rights movement. This protest occurred because of the
assassination of Martin Luther King Junior. Some methods were: attack, protest, and looting. Over two thousand one hundred fifty people were
arrested, five hundred injured, and eleven deaths. 6. Three people died during the Omaha riot. This protest happened because of the relationship
between the whites and blacks was horrible. 7. A violent protest is the division street riots, sixteen people were wounded. The groups in this protest

Why People Protest
I believe protesters have the right to be heard. Many people have different ideas and society is much better off when those ideas can be discussed
openly. Protesters join together and participate in marches, rallies and events in order to put their concerns front and center for public opinion. When
people protest, they usually share a common cause and a desire for change. Protesting and the freedom of speech is a constitutional right for all
citizens. Protesting unites people together so they can voice solutions to real problems rather than doing nothing and just complaining. Protesting
empowers people I have chosen two articles, Uprooted and Olympic Games Boycotts and Political Events to reference why we need to fight to change
the world.

Right To Protest Essay
Protesting is when someone objects something someone else has done or said. When you are protesting you are standing up for what you believe in.
Everyone has the right to protest, according to the first amendment. The first amendment in the US Constitution states ,"Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the
people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.".This amendment is stating that the people have the right to
protest because it states that you have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of assemble. This essay will analyze what protesting is and if it is
effective or not.
There are many different types and ways of protesting. For example, there are sit–ins, where you remain in one spot...show more content...
For example, the Women's march. Thousands of women, men, and children gathered to protest against Donald Trump's election, equality, health issues,

class, religion or gender. In the article it states, "This march is incredibly important," said Hayne Beattie–Gray, a South Carolina organizer. "It is the first
page of the next chapter, but it is what we bring back to our communities and that we capitalize on an awakening of sorts for people who had gotten
complacent about what was important to them."(CNN).This quotes is talking about how the march is bringing people together. This protest showed
that people won't stand for not having equality, health issues and women's rights. This protest brought people together. It caused more people to get
more involved in politics. This might have had not made a big dent in the politician part of Trump, but it did make a big and effective part in the

Protest Art
Art most definitely should question the status quo. Art is a form of someone's expression on a particular issue, and our expression and beliefs on a
issue is what makes us all individuals. We are all not the same so art shouldn't be either.
For this reason. some protest art reaches a larger audience, but not all, it depends on how large the issue is. does reach a large enough audience to be
effective. Such as, in the recent events in society; Black Lives Matter, I have noticed a lot of art depicting both sides. With this in mind, protest art is
part of an American citizen's First amendment right, freedom of speech.

Protest Importance
The Importance of Protest
Protests, by a group of individuals that resist against government behavior of certain policies or practices influence human lives. Although critics think
that the protests aren't a relevant ideal to solve an issue, history has shaped our future and has influenced us on the objection against inequality in
America. Even today, individuals are still affected from unfair policies and laws. For example, immigrants are being targeted by officials for
deportation and are being blamed as a threat to the U.S. economy. This is the reason why politics have put restrains on funds, healthcare, and
enhancement in resources. Fundamentally, protest is significant to have justice, and we must persuade others to understand our views and opinions to
get their help to unite with us and resist against the immoral behavior of the government.
Instead, politics should care and treat individuals fairly than leave them to suffer with the consequences of government behavior. The government has
the power and authority to control human lives, and it has had an impact on how humans live their lives. Also, racism is a major issue amongst
ethnicity and the government is subjective on this issue, and the U.S, population has all platforms of different race and must cease this issue to prevent
racism. Protest is a controversial topic that people either object or agree to regarding on the issue because of different opinions, so consideration must
be taken into actions. Protest

Pros And Cons Of Protest Essay
Argumentative Essay (Protesting) There has been many problems throughout the world, from one generation to the next. Society has tried to fix those
problems by protesting, but not every problem can be solved. When people protest, we sometimes get an answer; not realizing that the answer we tend
to get also leads to another problem. That is why protesting is not effective. On August 9th, an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, was shot and
killed by a white police officer, Darren Wilson. Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson left the Ferguson Market and Liquor and the surveillance video
showed Michael Brown stealing cigarillos. They walked along West Florissant Avenue and then in the middle of the street on Canfield Drive. It seems

Current Event: How police can work effectively with protest groups Protesting has become an extremely common way for people to voice their
opinion with the aid of our current social media boom. Author Rich Emberlin's article, How police can work effectively with protest groups", addresses
the current issues with police presence at protest and provides tactics that have worked for his department (2017). Emberlin explains that proper
communication has served as the Dallas Police Department's main combatant against these activist groups. The Dallas Police Department Criminal

Protesters are showing up to large scale protest with an anti–police mentality due to poor social media depiction of police. The Dallas Police
Department has minimized police misperception by placing communication with these activist groups as a priority. By reaching out to organizations
leaders prior to their protest and establishing relationships with these groups Dallas Police have created an understanding of police presence at these
events, to promote safety for all attending parties. To "set the tone for collaboration, not conflict", Emberlin's department monitors social media for any
potential threats that may occur at protest (Emberlin, 2017). They also will research activist groups prior to protest in attempt to better understand what
they protest for and further anticipate any safety issues that may occur such as counter–protesters. The article provides three key points that have
greatly aided the Dallas Police Department, creating solid relationships with protest group leaders, maintaining an open form of communication
throughout events, and anticipating potential issues that may occur (Emberlin, 2017). If other agencies follow initiatives taken by Emberlin's police
would have a less difficult time managing modern activist

The Benefits of Peaceful Protest Movements

  • 1. Social Protests And Its Impact On Society Over the past centuries, social protests have played a key part in American society. Throughout these past recent one hundred years there have been social protests for gender equality, racial equality, voting rights, education rights, and human rights. As society is evolving, social protesting has become a major part of our lifestyle among younger and older generations, and are beginning to happen quiet frequently. With these constant protests, like the Black Lives Matter Movement and the Anti–Abortion Movement, comes the ever present issue of violence and non–violence, and whether violence in protests is beneficial or completely unnecessary. In order for a protest to be effective, a non–violence approach is necessary, because violence diverts attention away from the main claims of the social protests themselves. Violence can be defined in many different ways. The Oxford Dictionary defines violence to be "behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something". However, I don't necessarily agree with this definition entirely. I believe violence is a combination of acts against someone or something that induces physical, mental, and emotional pain and suffering. This means that violence doesn't always have to be physical. Violence can be abusive words and threats, that used consistently can harmfully damage someone's mentality and emotions. In many instances where violence in protests have occurred, physical force is usually the main source Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Protest Movement Upon hearing the terms the Exodus, the Protestant Reformation, the March on Washington, Bed–In for Peace, Ferguson, and the Arab Springs, the same emotion is triggered among anyone who understands their significance. Perhaps because in spite of their inherent differences and motivations, all of these protests possess one similar aspect; they are actions intended to preserve basic human rights. And despite the inherent differences in the way each and every individual is raised and taught, most individuals comprehend the importance of defending what they believe to be morally and/or socially acceptable. History shows again and again that the heroes of children's storybooks are still in existence when humans continually come together in large...show more content... The Catholic Church began with the birth of Jesus Christ in the first century A.D. and remained virtually intact until people felt that its teachings and practices were focused on tradition and monetary values, rather than religious values ("The Reformation"). The Reformation sought to amend the corrupted practices of the church by empowering peasants with the hope of achieving priesthood, which was forbidden by the Catholic Church. In the span of three years, Luther's reform, Protestantism, quickly became the state religion in three separate regions. Luther and his "95 Theses" were not only successful, but also able to utilize a protest's most potent weapon– the promise of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Martin Luther King's policy of peaceful protest was important because it led to public sympathy of the way black Americans were treated by white Americans an example of this would be the Birmingham campaign (1963), Kennedy said he was sickened by the images of violence and the soviet media used 1/5 of their time to broadcast on it. Other campaigns that where peaceful and effective which were set up or supported by king include The Selma campaign, Montgomery Bus Boycott, the march on Washington, the Birmingham campaign, king supported freedom rides. Some campaigns failed through peaceful protest such as the Albany movement as Laurie Pritchett stopped media attention by treating the protestors with respect. Kings policy of peaceful protest...show more content... The march on Washington showed that the different civil rights campaign groups could work together such as SNCC, NAACP, SCLC, and CORE also it showed that all of the different civil rights groups had united goals and methods. This shows that if the aims were achievable and the correct amount of planning had been used then the policy of peaceful protest was a successful policy. However if the aims were not achievable and there wasn't much planning the policy of peaceful protest wouldn't work and example of this is The Albany Movement; this didn't work because the aims were too broad and the planning wasn't good enough Laurie Pritchett didn't respond to the civil rights campaigners so they needed to target places that would react violently; they did learn from their mistakes though because in the Birmingham campaign it worked better. Other campaigns that King either supported or led include the Greensboro sit–ins, the Freedom Riders and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Greensboro sit–ins were not lead by King but they were supported by him, the Greensboro sit–ins showed black Americans economic power because the restaurant lost 20% of its predicted profits also it spread fast and desegregated shops; the policy of peaceful protest worked well because nothing failed/went wrong in the sit–ins. The Freedom riders showed co–operation because CORE, SNCC and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The National Protest Movement Protest movements are very important in order to accomplish humanity's progressions by creating revolution. Protests are common throughout history because they arise from the desire to improve. The word protest is often confused with the word riot, which gives it a negative connotation aside from protest's actual peaceful nature. In reality, protests brings major changes to the entire community and shapes the world. Many protests are not well known, but together add up to become a more popular movement. This is why freedom to protest is the first amendment. There are multiple examples of protest, each with their own reasons, but all were made to change society. Professor Piven says protests make a big impact on a worldly scale rather than just the targeted community. With an abundance of technology readily available to improve travel and communication, news can spread quickly throughout the entire world. When Piven says, "I say that we are in the middle of a protest movement –a worldwide protest movement," she is referring to that global connection technology allows for (Piven, 2012). An example of a protest that turned into a national movement would be the Ferguson Protests. In 2012, Trayvon Martin, a black unarmed teen, was shot by patrolling guard, George Zimmerman.(CNN,...show more content... "Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise," founder Alicia Garza states (Garza, 2014). The movement spread through social media and protests were held all over the nation. " We've connected people across the country working to end the various forms of injustice impacting our people. We've created space for the celebration and humanization of Black lives," Garza says as her movement becomes more popular(Garza, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. The Benefits Of Peaceful Protest Peacefully protesting to show support of a cause is not harmful to society. In the past, it has been a technique simply to show you feel that your situation, a law or a proposition is not justified, in your eyes. Protesting in that way does not damage society, however protests too often escalate to anger and violence, diminishing the validity of the cause being demonstrated. Peaceful protest can be an effective and beneficial way to make a point about how many in a population feel strongly about an issue, yet many protests do not go as intended. The idea is to calmly make your opinion known, to get noticed and to demonstrate the sheer mass of opposition to a particular topic. Peaceful protest alone is not harmful, it is simply a group of people...show more content... Violent protest is divisive – it turns citizens away from seeing reason in your stance, costs taxpayers money for police protection and control and drives people strongly to one side or the other of the issues protested. The reason that protests are often seen as dangerous is because they can turn sour as the result of people using this power and ability to demonstrate as a reason to injure and destroy, often without any connection to the original protested topic. The March was billeted by some as a backlash against the election of President Trump, as serving notice that America will not cower in the face of bigotry. The turnout dwarfed that of Trump's inauguration ceremony. It seemed as though the "liberal Left" spent so much time lecturing Trump supporters on the importance of accepting the election outcome, but when the results weren't what they expected, Democrats were first shocked, then threw a metaphorical temper Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Right Way To Protest Essay When I think of protesting, I think of activists who want to make and see a change being made on a specific social issue. In regards to the "right" way to protest, I believe that less is more and simply getting together in a civilized matter is much more effective than causing chaos in the streets. Everybody handles things differently and some might find that being lawful is not the way to protest but in my point of view, I believe that risking you life or breaking the law is definitely not the way to get your voice heard clearly. In regards to protesting that blocks a freeway, I do not believe that it is a legitimate form of protesting. The reason being that 1) even though our First Amendment right protects freedom of speech, it is against the law to disobey traffic laws. 2) There must be enough space on the sidewalk or freeway entrance to allow the safe movement of traffic without putting the protester or...show more content... This form of protest focuses on disrupting the peace and damaging property, whether it be personal or government belongings. Vandalism, such as graffiti, is an act of public disturbance caused by a social activists who wants to generate awareness of issues and to influence people's thoughts. I believe that this is not a form of protest because it does not bring awareness to an issue but instead causes more chaos to the individuals involved. When someone damages someone else's property, it is extremely violating and eventually will make that particular social group look bad. If you are vandalizing property on behalf of a movement or campaign, then you are therefore a representation of what your group believes in. For example, when someone riots and vandalizes someone's property because they are angry is against the law and overall it just puts the person doing the criminal act back a couple of steps in spreading their message Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Peaceful Protest Essay In the past few years, protest movements have surged across the United States. Various issues, thought to have been resolved, have explosively re–entered political discourse. In light of these demonstrations and their outwardly unsubstantial effect, many have begun questioning the purpose of peaceful protest. The majority of the issues being rallied against still exist, after all. However, civil disobedience is needed to preserve the well–being of any free society, including America. Due tononviolent resistance, individuals are able to diversify perspectives, preserve their integrity, and resist a pernicious self–satisfaction in a nation's progress. Firstly, civil disobedience promotes the free exchange of ideas that a well–informed and...show more content... It is too easy to assume that all is well, that all are treated equally, that America is truly the land of the free. Accepting a facade of perfection is much simpler than confronting injustices. With nonviolent protest, however, that facade is not allowed to persist. Many spokespeople, in reaction to the outcry against Trump's controversial actions, have dismissed violent and nonviolent objectors as restless troublemakers. While that may be true of the violent protestors, that argument implies that peaceful protest is inherently an unworthy pursuit because it upsets the serenity of a free society. I beg to differ: it is because protest disrupts the social order that it is so greatly needed. Without protest, we are lulled into the trap of security. We begin to think that endorsing outlawed torture tactics, attacking the free press, and violating the First Amendment is normal – and morality suddenly diminishes in importance. Yet, by protesting, we are able to resist the temptation of normalization and abetting unjust practices, and we instead make a change for the better, as witnessed in a federal judge's nationwide block of the Muslim ban within a week of its implementation, following nationwide demonstrations (NPR, 2017). Though this is certainly a step forward, the block is not the end of this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. The Right To Protest Essay Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts the laws of a free society. It shows the government the laws which are being passed are disagreeing with the citizens it affects. The right to protest is weaved into the Constitution and the Forefathers wanted a nation of people who stand up for what they believe in. Peaceful protests can reverse the law which had been passed. As there is a new President is in the Oval Office, it means new laws and policies are instilled throughout the nation. As outrageous as the laws and policies may be, it is up to Congress whether it should be passed or vetoed. To this day, President Trump could possibly be the most unorthodox president in the history of theUnited States; he does not favor certain races and is a very hateful man in power....show more content... Citizens of the United States have been protesting on the behalf of the citizens of these countries because before our country was recognized as a nation, people came from other countries to help it thrive and eventually become a nation. The United States was founded and built upon immigrants, so for President Trump to halt immigrants to enter the country is similar to unfasten a future for the United States. The ForeFathers saw protest as a right of every citizen, "Right of the people to alter or abolish any government and institute a new one that would better secure their safety and happiness"(Mirkins p. 61). The right of every United States citizen is to change and eliminate any government and establishment to ensure a more secure and jovial future for the United States and its citizens. These protests show President Trump is not favored for banning an entire religion from the U.S. The one of the reasons settlers came the North America was the freedom of religion. It can possibly reverse Trump's decision to ban Muslims and not have an entire religion hate the United Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Arguments Against Protests Is there not a better way to protest America's problems without protesting America? Given that the First Amendment allows us to protest our grievances we should be allowed to take a knee during the national anthem if we feel it's necessary. The again, there are other ways to protest our country's problems without protesting the United States, so people with a higher status should not take advantage of the status to protest. For example, these idols are losing viewers. In Article 1 it mentions "a recent poll found Kaepernick to be the most disliked NFL player". This shows he needs a better solution to the problem then kneeling during the Star Spangled Banner to solve these issues. In addition, America has no called these issues. • 10. Essay On Peaceful Protest A very debatable topic circulating in today's society is whether or not peaceful protest is considered to be effective. Peaceful protest is a form of nonviolent resistance to express one's disapproval or dislike through an action and/or statement without using violence to do so. Most people in today's society do not know how to protest peaceably. Most protests today, as many protests in the past, either begin or end in violence. Peaceful protest is not effective in today's society for multiple reasons, but the biggest one is because most people do not like to stop and listen to what others have to say before they react. The first Amendment says that we have the right to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances (Bill of Rights). Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Now, there is nothing wrong in having an ordinance which requires a permit for a parade. But such an ordinance becomes unjust when it is used to maintain segregation and to deny citizens the first amendment privilege of peaceful assembly and protest" (Stanley 100). There are times when peaceful protest has been used and was effective. For example, the majority of the protests lead by Martin Luther King Jr. wielded positive results for their movement. For instance, the Montgomery bus boycott was a protest against racial segregation on the public transit system in Montgomery, Alabama (Andrew Mach). The protest ended with the removal of "white only" and "black only" signs in downtown Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Protesting Protest Against Police Brutality There has been a great uproar between Americans protesting against police brutality. Many Americans, black and white believe we should protest against them and then there are others who believe we should not. The majority of Americans who protest against them are blacks. They believe police are only here to harm everyone, but I believe differently. I believe we should stop protesting against police brutality because it is causing to many riots in cities. Police officers shouldn't all be categorized as a bunch of brutal men and women trying to cause harm to everyone. If anyone is brutal it's the protesters. First let's discuss how this situation came about. Why are there protests against police brutality? Most of everyone has heard of the 2014 Ferguson protest. This protest was to find justice for a young man named Michael Brown. Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white male police officer, Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014. According to writer German Lopez, Wilson claimed Brown was not being cooperative and charged at him. Eyewitnesses claim differently. According to an eyewitness Brown surrendered, but that still did not keep Wilson from firing his gun. Brown had committed a robbery earlier that day and Wilson recognized him, which is the reason Wilson pulled him over. Unfortunately, there was not enough evidence for the grand jury and the Department of Justice to file any charges against Darren Wilson. (Lopez). This created a big uproar for the community and most Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Nonviolent Protest Essay There is a lot of discussion about how to handle social change through nonviolent protest and passive resistance. The people who agree with this idea, such as the citizens in South Africa who followed the practice of satyagraha. Since they followed in their leader, Mohandas Karamch and Gandhi, they stood their ground and applied the "non– cooperation movement".Which is becoming self– reliant and also not supporting British products. However, there are also strong arguments against this. For example, the British authorities saw Gandhi's protest as civil obedience. In conclusion, I think Gandhi's way of handling social change is more effective, because as stated in the reading that many civil right leaders were inspired and his teachings and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Causes Of Violent Protest violent 1. One of the violent protest was held in Birmingham, Alabama and was put together by Martin Luther King Jr. and others. The sheriff, Bull Connor, dealt with the crazy environment by using fire hoses and police dogs. African Americans were beaten and Martin Luther was arrested. 2. Martin Luther and others held a "non–violent" protest near Selma, Alabama. Around six hundred marchers were marching for rights, where state and local lawmen attacked them with billy clubs and tear gas. 3. The Watts riot was a very violent protest in the civil rights movement history. An African–American was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. An argument broke out and then increased into a fight. 4. During the Rochester Race Riot four died, three hundred fifty people were injured, and one thousand arrested. This riot was caused because it is believed that police were brutality against black. 5. 1968 Chicago riots were one of the most violent protest in in the civil rights movement. This protest occurred because of the assassination of Martin Luther King Junior. Some methods were: attack, protest, and looting. Over two thousand one hundred fifty people were arrested, five hundred injured, and eleven deaths. 6. Three people died during the Omaha riot. This protest happened because of the relationship between the whites and blacks was horrible. 7. A violent protest is the division street riots, sixteen people were wounded. • 14. Why People Protest I believe protesters have the right to be heard. Many people have different ideas and society is much better off when those ideas can be discussed openly. Protesters join together and participate in marches, rallies and events in order to put their concerns front and center for public opinion. When people protest, they usually share a common cause and a desire for change. Protesting and the freedom of speech is a constitutional right for all citizens. Protesting unites people together so they can voice solutions to real problems rather than doing nothing and just complaining. Protesting empowers people I have chosen two articles, Uprooted and Olympic Games Boycotts and Political Events to reference why we need to fight to change the world. • 15. Right To Protest Essay Protesting is when someone objects something someone else has done or said. When you are protesting you are standing up for what you believe in. Everyone has the right to protest, according to the first amendment. The first amendment in the US Constitution states ,"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.".This amendment is stating that the people have the right to protest because it states that you have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of assemble. This essay will analyze what protesting is and if it is effective or not. There are many different types and ways of protesting. For example, there are sit–ins, where you remain in one spot...show more content... For example, the Women's march. Thousands of women, men, and children gathered to protest against Donald Trump's election, equality, health issues, and women's rights. This protest was seen to be effective in many ways. It brought some of the world together, no matter the age differences, social class, religion or gender. In the article it states, "This march is incredibly important," said Hayne Beattie–Gray, a South Carolina organizer. "It is the first page of the next chapter, but it is what we bring back to our communities and that we capitalize on an awakening of sorts for people who had gotten complacent about what was important to them."(CNN).This quotes is talking about how the march is bringing people together. This protest showed that people won't stand for not having equality, health issues and women's rights. This protest brought people together. It caused more people to get more involved in politics. This might have had not made a big dent in the politician part of Trump, but it did make a big and effective part in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Protest Art Art most definitely should question the status quo. Art is a form of someone's expression on a particular issue, and our expression and beliefs on a issue is what makes us all individuals. We are all not the same so art shouldn't be either. For this reason. some protest art reaches a larger audience, but not all, it depends on how large the issue is. does reach a large enough audience to be effective. Such as, in the recent events in society; Black Lives Matter, I have noticed a lot of art depicting both sides. With this in mind, protest art is part of an American citizen's First amendment right, freedom of speech. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Protest Importance The Importance of Protest Protests, by a group of individuals that resist against government behavior of certain policies or practices influence human lives. Although critics think that the protests aren't a relevant ideal to solve an issue, history has shaped our future and has influenced us on the objection against inequality in America. Even today, individuals are still affected from unfair policies and laws. For example, immigrants are being targeted by officials for deportation and are being blamed as a threat to the U.S. economy. This is the reason why politics have put restrains on funds, healthcare, and enhancement in resources. Fundamentally, protest is significant to have justice, and we must persuade others to understand our views and opinions to get their help to unite with us and resist against the immoral behavior of the government. Instead, politics should care and treat individuals fairly than leave them to suffer with the consequences of government behavior. The government has the power and authority to control human lives, and it has had an impact on how humans live their lives. Also, racism is a major issue amongst ethnicity and the government is subjective on this issue, and the U.S, population has all platforms of different race and must cease this issue to prevent racism. Protest is a controversial topic that people either object or agree to regarding on the issue because of different opinions, so consideration must be taken into actions. • 18. Pros And Cons Of Protest Essay Argumentative Essay (Protesting) There has been many problems throughout the world, from one generation to the next. Society has tried to fix those problems by protesting, but not every problem can be solved. When people protest, we sometimes get an answer; not realizing that the answer we tend to get also leads to another problem. That is why protesting is not effective.
