The term “Hallyu” (한류) originated in the Chinese
language that translates as “Korean Wave”
(sometimes referred to as K-wave).
Hallyu, or the “Korean Wave” describes the
influence of Korean pop culture, entertainment,
music, TV dramas and movies on the world.
Hallyu reached Japan and mainland China, and
after that, it spread to other countries in East Asia
and Southeast Asia.

Since the late 1990s, the Hallyu wave has gained a lot of
attention in the Philippines. Its dramas and music introduced
thousands of fans to Korean culture. In 2018, according to
the Korea Foundation, the Philippines became the number
one country that recorded the highest growth rate of Hallyu
fans, out of 113 countries.
For starters, the Hallyu wave means “Korean wave”. This is
the spread of Korean culture through music, television
dramas, and dance. It establishes fandoms for K-pop boy
and girl groups, Korean artists, actors, and actresses.

For the record, Filipinos have always been welcoming to
new trends and cultures. The Hallyu wave is just one of
them, but it has heightened influence during this
generation.
In addition, Korean celebrities and K-pop group
comebacks are featured in entertainment news both in
print and on broadcasts in the Philippines.

-It is very obvious that hallyu had brought great changes to Filipinos’
fashion. Filipino youth became more concerned on how they look and
they want to be “in trend”. Filipino fashion designers also became more
creative in designing clothes to match the trend that Korean fashion had
started.
•KOREAN DRAMAS/MOVIE SERIES/K-POP
-some of our Filipino dramas has adopting the k-dramas story telling to
make something new and to be more creative. The popularity of K-pop
groups or the character in the k-dramas which provided a drive to young,
aspiring Filipinos, to organize themselves and to be more influenced as a
Filipino citizen especially to those teenager.

Negative effect:
•CULTURAL PRODUCTS
-The negative effects of Hallyu include the decrease of
patriotism among Filipinos particularly when they spend
indiscriminately on Korean products— K-pop albums and
Kdrama DVDs. the Filipino teenagers don't realize that because
they more focusing in Korean products as much and they don't
think about the works of Filipino products in other words they
value the products of other countries more than the works of
their own country.
8. THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE AFFECT OF

ADDICTION:
Many of those k-drama fans mostly filipino who are
spending more time in terms of watching those dramas
and they don't realize that they are addicted in watching
k-drama series and it can cause of sleepness, not
eating in the right time and eventually not good for
health.
