“Free, open source initiative to deal with Data, Models and Tools in
marine & coastal science and engineering projects”
Papers:
WODCON 2010
NCK 2012
Terra et Aqua, 2013
4. What happened?
Cascade project
(http://cascade.wr.usgs.gov/)
- Impact of climate change scenarios on San Francisco Bay-Delta eco-
system
- 8 MUSD over 1 years funded by CalFed and USGS
- Small involvement of Deltares (~50 KEuro), DFM is central model
- UNESCO-IHE applies DFM software
- CASCAde ends in June 2015: deliverable DFM Bay-Delta Model
10. What happened?
Cascade partners:
USGS, Stanford, Berkeley, UNESCO-IHE, UC San Diego.
Cascade topics :
- Hydraulics: tidal propagation, flooding, levee overtopping, salt intrusion,
high speed computations (DFM)
- Herman Kernkamp, Arthur van Dam, Sander van der Pijl, Mick van der
Wegen
- Sediments: SSC and sediment budgets (Delwaq based on DFM)
- Fernanda Achete, Mick van der Wegen (PhD, UIHE)
- Phytoplankton dynamics (Delwaq based on DFM)
- Hans Los, Tineke Troost
- Bivalves habitat (Delwaq based on DFM)
- Hans Los, Tineke Troost, Valesca Hareszlak
11. Launch of Community model in 2014
Community model
(http://www.d3d-baydelta.org/)
“Our vision is to support the development of a open source , open access,
web-based infrastructure around the SF Bay-Delta model to stimulate
and enhance scientific knowledge, understanding and operational
management of the Bay-Delta system. ”
12. Community model: Deltares’ commercial perspective
Advertisement and networking
Deltares will be advertised to interested parties in the Bay-delta area. In
addition, the Community Model concept can act as a Deltares
demonstration project for similar (open access/source) case studies
worldwide.
Research
Deltares will be more closely linked to research at universities/research
institutes like Stanford, Berkeley, USGS, SFEI. Deltares may profit from
third party code development and research.
Consultancy projects
From a water perspective, pressure on the Bay Delta system is immense.
These include scenarios for climate change and human interference.
There is no single (operational) model with strong linkage to water quality
and ecosystem functioning.
13. Spinoff for Deltares
- Extra financial support for Cascade work
- by USGS : ~50 KUSD
- by SFEI : 100 KUSD
- General interest in Community model concept
- New calls like Cascade expected in 2015
14. Experience
- It took 9 months to sign a contract between Deltares, DUSA and SFEI
- There is a moral commitment from many software developers to deliver
Cascade relevant software products despite other Deltares priority
settings
- Current presence is the Bay-Delta area is an asset, although specific
knowledge (hydrology, rainfall runoff, groundwater coupling) is lacking
