The Encuentro Guadalupe is a boutique
hotel located in Valle de Guadalupe in Baja
California. The architects, Gracia Studio,
had originally designed a minimal concept
for this location, which included simplistic
branding and materials. To honor their
previous design, the original use of local
materials and industrial elements were
maintained, but additions and alterations
were made to the design. To further
enhance the original sustainable design
and branding, this proposal offers new
architectural details to aid with direct
sun, enhance the visual experience of
each space, and to make spaces allow an
inclusion of all abilities.

5. RAMA ZORRILO
Derived from a local flower called
Rama Zorrillo, we found inspiration
in the radial rotation of the flower’s
stem as it grows. This inspiration was
an important incorporation to this
already geometric and orthogonal
design. Using this radial element
helps to incorporate a subtle organic
quality to this rectilinear site.
The site being close to an Indigenous
community, it was important that
we incorporate their local culture
into our design to allow a cohesive
immersion with the land. Using their
basket weaving as an inspiration,
we further explored the use of this
pattern throughout our site design.
Using the existing landscape around
the site, we pulled our layering
inspiration from the mountains
that hug the Valle de Guadalupe.
Mirroring the mountain scape into
our design, we wanted to use this to
our advantage in creating a dynamic
inclusion of elements.

C O M M U N I T Y
A crossover of both WELL and
LEED is an integration of daylight
into indoor environments so that
daylight may be used for visual
tasks along with electric lighting.
This is done in various spaces
by utilizing large windows and
minimal indoor and outdoor
division.
A crossover of both WELL and
LEED is an integration of nature
into the project’s interior and
exterior through design elements
that supports direct access to
nature using plants, water, light,
views, and natural materials. This is
incorporated through minimizing
the barrier of interior and exterior
by large windows or operable glass
walls, skylights, plant integration,
and use of local natural materials.
Designed outdoor spaces to
avoid excessive wind and manage
elevated temperatures through
shading or other strategies. The
exterior temperature is lowered
through an increased amount of
awnings and through the width
extension of pre-existing awnings.
This method provides shade for
guests and is located in positions
that harness the local breeze.
A feature that requires projects
to comply with basic accessible
design requirements in their
region and integrate principles of
universal design into the design
and operation of the space. This
integration is done by providing an
adequate amount of passageway
and ramps for locations with
elevated floor heights. In addition
to mobility accessibility, there is
also an integration of accessible
lodging.
8
10. The new layout design of the main building was
created to provide a better traffic flow for all parties
utilizing the space. The lobby was moved outside
to be a clear indication where guests check in, as
well as the lobby space, which was placed adjacent
with custom wood panel seating. Inside, there is a
unique common space where guests can wait for
their event or table reservation. The restaurant was
moved to the right side of the building to enable
a more mood lit environment, while the event hall
was moved to the opposite side of the building
to really take advantage of the pre-existing floor
to ceiling windows. To incorporate the outdoors
inside the main building, chiseled rock seating
was brought in to add more interest to the space,
as well as, an additional dynamic feature. The
continuous use of wood, concrete, and steel are
the reoccurring materials used in this space

IDEATION | SINGING TREE FROM ENGLAND
Utilizing the local wind patterns, this structure was built to create a
therapeutic location for guests to escape reality. The structure was
designed with 3” wide galvanized steel pipes to create a low humming
sound in the structure. The low humming sounds replicates white noise
and varies with the intensity of the wind. Not only do the pipes create a
harmonic choir, but they also provide ample shade throughout the day
by filtering light through their spaced out gaps. Inspired by the Singing
Ringing Tree in Burnley, United Kingdom designed by Mike Tonkin and
Anna Liu, this design was meant to create a unique experience, while
providing a healthy getaway space.

The new proposal for the Encuentro
Guadalupe has maintained the sustainable
design intent, while improving pre-
existing structures with upgrades that are
accessible to people of all abilities. These
improvements were inspired by the local
landscape of Baja California and feature
the Rama Zorrillo, the mountainsides
of Valle de Guadalupe, and the local
custom of basket weaving. Drawing these
inspirations from the landscape provided
ample opportunities to expand on this
project by creating a cohesive and dynamic
design that nature could be proud of.
