The Design Problem was carefully reviewed and the focus of the problem was
based on addressing how the house would serve the inhabitants. Throughout
the design process we “put (ourselves) in the home”. We also addressed the
home’s connection to the outside (for views, daylight, outdoor living, and a
connection with the neighborhood).
Our main approach was building a sustainable home in a simple and elegant
way. To achieve this, the design solution takes the program and arranges the
house into two zones. The First Zone being Public (or Day Living), was designed
as an open area where interaction between the inhabitants and guests would
occur and where daily activities would take place. The Second Zone being
Private (or Night Living), was designed to include spaces where the inhabitants
would retreat from the Public Zone, service spaces, and spaces where they
would sleep. Our simple diagram reflects two zones overlapping to create a
straightforward circulation pattern.
In looking at construction methods and materials, Advanced Framing is being
used to account for each stud in the house in order to minimize construction
materials, waste, time and money; yet provide savings through reducing HVAC
loads with more insulation. We chose green products based on initial cost, long
term cost, functionality, and health benefits. This house is a simple design that
could easily be replicated throughout the Gulf Coast region.
