A star is both ordinary and extraordinary.
A star is both present and absent.
On white boards, break down what these statements mean. Can
you link these to any existing artists who you feel it may apply to?
2. ‘Paradox of the Stars’ (1979)
• Dyer suggests that there are two paradoxes (things that
contradict themselves). He suggested that there are two
contrary representations when it comes to stars.
– “…a star is both ordinary and extraordinary.”
– “…a star is both present and absent.”

3. “…a star is both

4. "...a star is both
present and absent."
They exist and are part of
our lives in the fact that
we discuss them socially,
may adopt our style from
them, construct our
identity and they may
dictate some of our
consumer habits.
But they are also absent;
out of reach and not
actually there.
