2. Digipaks are usually made
with a paperback or card
stock outer binding and one
or more plastics trays which
can hold a CD or DVD
inside.
Digipaks sometimes have a UV coating on them to give
them greater longevity and prevent fading and bleaching
of the paper.
3. The Digipak is a patented style of optical disc packaging.
The Digipak trademark is currently held by AGI-
Shorewood who are an Atlas Holdings LLC company.
The patent has been through several different companies
over the years, though.
The Digipak began to grow
in popularity in the early
2000s and was used by a lot
of Record Labels and
Artists.
4. Digipaks themselves were one of the first alternatives to
the typical jewel cases used for CDs by the majority of
large record companies.
Because there is no other alternative name for the
Digipak-style package the term is sometimes used in a
generic sense.
5. Digipaks are mostly used for CD singles and special
editions of CD albums.
They can also be used as premium packages for DVDs or
sets of DVDs.
Despite being widely used nowadays Digipaks are less
robust than Jewel cases and so are broken easier.
Digipaks were introduced as an alternative to jewel cases
as downloading music became popular. They were
unique and so were used to bring in more customers.
