Abstract
It is considered that today’s modern society is largely different because it is a product of different
political, social and economic ideologies that were formulated and brought into operation in society since
the middle ages. The dictionary defines ideology as a body of beliefs and myths that guide individuals,
societies, institutions or nations (ideology. (n.d), 2014)
Today’s individual is therefore a product of changing ideologies and the resulting social practices that have
evolved over the past few centuries. This has had a major impact on how our clothing has been designed and
wornthroughthe lastfewcenturies. Thisessay explores the interrelationsamongdress,performance and agency
of two cases – alternative wear and reform wear from the vantage point of the key term ideology.
The years from1850 to 1890 were definedas the Age of Nationalismand Reform, which was a period marked by
a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe and the western world. Some of the architects of the
political revolutionof the times include Napolean in France and Bismarck in Germany but in general there was a
great movement towards nationalism and reform all over the European continent. These political and social
changeswere reflectedinmanyaspectsof people’severydaylife,includingthe dressingandfashionof the times.
