Sleep Clinics Operating at 200 Percent Capacity
Across America, hundreds of sleep clinics are operating over capacity.
Long lines, long wait times, overburdened doctors and staff, and
dangerously low levels of REM and NREM sleep units have resulted in
many insomniacs being turned away. Beds are scarce at clinics from Florida
to Montana. Some clinics are allegedly violating NSB policy and assigning
multiple insomniacs to single observation rooms.
“They are desperate for sleep, but often we’re too desperate to help them,”
said Dr. Mike Alvarez of the Pittsfield Sleep Clinic.
Calling it a crisis, Dr. Helen Roo of the Richmond Sleep Clinic said that she
and her staff of four have been working 27-hour shifts.
“The sad thing is, there is nothing to be done for the majority of these
people. Most of the patients who come to us are suffering from the new
orexin dysfunction. Our medicines don’t help them. Traditional drugs like
zolpidem don’t have any effect. What can you do? We change the sheets.
We try to give them a safe place to stay awake and to calm their anxieties
about not sleeping, which can aggravate the presenting condition.”

Q: Who was the first recorded death, and when did the Slumber
Corps start as a not-for-profit organization in response to the
insomnia crisis?
A: Carolina Bell Duncan of Houston, Texas, who was born in Georgetown,
Guyana, and died in Washington, D.C., at age 19. Duncan is the world’s
first confirmed and death resulting from an inability to sleep and to dream
that we now understand to be a dysfunction of the orexin-system.
Eight years ago, the Slumber Corps came into being in Washington, D.C.,
as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to encourage and to facilitate sleep
donation. Our regional Pennsylvania supervisors, the Storch brothers, Rudy
and Jim, were involved from the beginning and generously support the
Corps financially. Since its inception Slumber Corps has helped more than
50,000 insomniacs.
