Daphne took a learning preferences survey and found she is reflective, visual, and sequential learner. She realized working in a group using visual aids on Facebook helped her learn. She chose the Learning Sage pathway to learn how technologies can aid learning. She found educational videos on YouTube and using apps on her iPod helpful. She explored social bookmarking on Delicious but found databases and Google searches more useful. Daphne will continue using sensing, reflection, iPods, and Facebook in the future for communication, recording lectures, and finding study groups as a nurse.
2. Learning Preferences
At the beginning of the semester, I took the learning preferences
survey and got a 3 for reflective, 7 for sensing, 7 for visual, and 3 for
sequential. I felt that knowing my learning preferences made a
difference in my personal learning success because I tried to work
around it to improve the way I study. Now that the semester is
over, I realized that I am still a reflective learner, but I also like to
study with a group. Usually when I study with a group, we also use
visuals to help all of us learn and communicate in different ways
like Facebook, a type of social networking website. Being a
sequential learner aside from being a visual learner also helped me
a lot this past semester because I like learning things in order.
Lastly, I didn’t really rely much on being a sensing learner. Overall, I
would say that being a sequential and visual learner helped me a lot
this past semester especially in my science classes.

3. Learning Pathway
I chose the Learning Sage pathway at the beginning of the class because I
wanted to learn how different types of technologies could help me in
school. I believe I was successful in getting a broader knowledge of social
learning media. For example, I didn’t know that there were educational
videos posted on Youtube until my friend told me to watch a video to help
me study for our lab quiz in Anatomy. When my friend told me about
these educational videos, I began using Youtube frequently. I didn’t
change my pathway because I learned about the different uses of
technology I have been using before.

4. Learning Activities
The technology quest on the social network section helped me get a
broader understanding on how to use different social networking
websites in studying. Evaluating the Facebook strategy gave me an idea
how Facebook could turn into a social learning website since people from
your class could contribute ideas. This was how the Anatomy study group
helped each other out past semester. They made a Facebook page where
we could help each other answer quizzes, post images to help us
memorize for the quiz/exam, etc. Facebook was also our way of
communicating with each other. I felt that this part of the quest opened
up my eyes about group work online because of websites that have
discussion areas (livemocha.com, goodreads.com) where you could
discuss a certain subject.

6. iPods & mp3
When I did this quest, I learned how to use my iPod for different
purposes. First, I searched for educational apps with detailed images
that I could use to help me memorize and this accommodated my
learning preference of being a visual learning. I have also downloaded
a texting application where I could text my friends and ask them for
help about a certain subject and although the survey said that I was a
reflective learner, I also like working with different people. My friends
were also able to record different lecture dates and they would share
the .mp3 file with me through email. This strategy accommodated my
learning preference of being reflective because I had to be able to
understand what the professor was saying.

7. Social Bookmarking
This quest was fairly new to me because I have never heard of Delicious
before, although I have seen websites organized like Delicious in Google.
Some of the websites I have visited when I research provide different links
that could also give me more information and this reminded me of
Delicious, except you could search more than one topic in Delicious. Since
people could share different websites on different topics, I think it would
be helpful for me if I took the time to explore Delicious since I didn’t really
use it much this past semester. This quest accommodated my learning
preference of being a reflective learner because I have to understand and
read each article that interests me.

8. Social Networking
This quest was my favorite out of all the quests because I am an avid user
of Facebook. I believe this quest accommodated my learning preference
of being a visual learner and at the same time a reflective learner because
I cannot always trust what people tell me. I have to be able to understand
the materials that were shared in our Facebook Anatomy group page.
Youtube was also helpful when I studied the parts of the skull because I
found a video where this doctor had a stick and pointed out which part
was which. Using Youtube accommodated my learning preference of
being a visual learner.

9. Synthesizing My Experience (Part 1)
The social bookmaking technology did not really help me learn
that much this past semester because as I said before, it was
new to me. I still had a hard time exploring how to use it and
whether it would be helpful for research or not. I am still glad to
have been informed about this technology and will consider
using it in the future. I was afraid of using this as a learning tool
because I have to put a lot of effort in analyzing, which websites
are trustworthy and which ones are not. So instead of using
Delicious, I used databases and looked for websites with .edu in
Google.

10. Synthesizing My Experience Part 2
I will continue to use my iPod to communicate with my future
group mates using Facetime or the text-messaging application
because believe it will help hone my skills as a group mate. I will
also continue to use Facebook to help communicate with group
mates through group chat. Since almost everyone has a Facebook
account nowadays, it is such a convenient way to look for people
and communicate. I never expected that being a part of a group in
Facebook could put people together where they could help each
other answer quizzes, schedule study groups, and share resources.

11. What Now?
I will continue to use my sensing and reflective learning strategies after this class
because they relate to each other. When I become a nurse, I just can’t look up
something when I don’t know what to do, I have to be able to think why I need to
take action and its outcome.
I will also continue to use my iPod because it can be used to record lectures and I
can possibly share it with others so that they could hear the information over and
over to retain the information. I will also continue to use Facebook because
almost every college students own a computer or a cell phone that could connect
to the Internet and make it possible for them to use Facebook. Facebook can be
used for my job if ever I need someone to take my shift for a day or if I have any
questions about my job, I could ask a co-worker. I could also try finding a group
for nurses where we could share our own experiences in our workplace in the
future.
