Funny student at exam hall
This short film only lasts one minute but it is to do with school and it is very comical and
simple and it links to our ideas of examination, the genre (comedy) and the actors being
teens.
Shot Description Sound effects/speech Length
1 establishing shot of hall in the day full Pieces of paper being turned over 2 sec
of students doing an examination
2 Medium close up of teacher sitting at “one minute, one minute please” 3 sec
the desk
3 Wide shot showing the main character Paper being turned over 3 sec
and other student around him
4 Side view close up of a pen writing on scribble 2 sec
the exam
In these first few shots we see the setting of this short film which is in a school hall, we see
the students doing an examination which we can tell is near the end of the exam as the
teacher says “one minute, one minute please” and by what the teacher is wearing we can tell
he is a smart teacher and the tone in his voice is very strong we to the audience
communicates he could well be strict, also the light which is shining through the windows I
felt seems like happiness and that this scene isn’t going to be sad or scary. Also the boy
looks around the room with communicates he has finished his exam and he looks bored but
also looks like he shouldn’t be something as he has a curious look around. The medium
close up of the teacher is tilting upwards which tells us he has a high authority compared the
younger students, also on his desk is an apple and a glass of water I felt these were placed
here to increase his authority because the students in the exam cant eat or drink and he can
which tells us more about his character. The teacher sits at the front of the hall up on stand
section with a clock behind him, I felt this links together as student have to look his way to
see the clock but they have to lift there heads which I thought also linked to his authority
being higher than the students. As the teacher says “1 minute” we see the student give a
little grin and look around the room which tells the audience he knows what he is doing but
he usually causes trouble and isn’t the most hard working boy which tells us about his
character.

We see the student acting very suspiciously as he looks up at the teacher and the teacher
looks down at him, the teacher still seems to be keeping this sort of arrogance about him by
lowering his glasses and looking down on the students which using a close up I felt really
worked which helped us see the attitude of the teacher, he also looks down at his watch in
the same way which communicates a similar feeling about him, also between this two
characters we can see the costume is completely different as the teacher is wearing a smart
suit which is a beige colour with a tie and shirt which shows he athoritive whilst the young
boy is in scruffy jeans and a black top which shows he lower than the teacher, also the hair
styles are very different as the teachers is very smart and seems to be perfectly in place
whilst the students hair is very scruffy which also shows there differences. Also again they
used the medium close up of the teacher but using the tilting up position again witch seems
to be repetitive. The teacher’s voice is very deep and precise as he pronounces every word
correctly which represents he has been well educated and knows what he is doing.

9 Over the shoulder view on the “.....and bring your papers to the 2 sec

15 Close up of him scribbling on the card scribbling 1 sec
16 Long shot of student - 2 sec
17 Wide shot of student getting up to Chair moving across floor 2 sec
hand in paper
We can tell from the way the student is that he shouldn’t be drawing on the bit of card and he
didn’t take much notice of the teacher which could result in a consequence which shows he
doesn’t care about the exam and he isn’t interested in school also the shot of him scribbling
on the card whilst everyone is moving shows that he is a day dreamer and isn’t the brightest
boy, the camera moves quiet quickly here to show different views of the student and the
student around him doing as they are told. The teacher’s voice is still very deep as he is
saying thank you to the students we don’t see him actually look into their eyes and say well
done he just says it as a overall thing which communicates that the exam could be wasting hi
time as he could be teaching but also it keeps the feel of how athoritive he is, as the papers
are being placed on his desk he seems to have his glasses resting on the end of his nose
and looking down at students which shows how much higher up he is compared to the

students as he looking down on them. We see a gap in between the students who are
placing there papers on the desk and in this gap we see the teacher quickly glance over
towards to the young student and he doesn’t look very impressed with the student as he isn’t
doing what he is told to do as the teachers facial expressions communicates this. The wide
shot of the young boy shows how confused he is and surprised that the exam hall is empty
and this shows he was day dreaming and was in his own world with his card, The students
quickly gets up and we get a view of the teacher sitting on the stand sorting the papers the
view here shows again the authority of the teacher being at the front of the hall.

This last part I feel really is cheeky the boy has been too busy scribbling and not listening we
see the teacher really shining in his role here as he says “sorry to late” but as his says this he
doesn’t look at the boy until the last word which shows how strict and how un-impressed he
is with the young boy, the medium close up of the boy looking confused shows he is going to
react in an inappropriate way as his face looks very mischievous as he looks down at the

paper, also the way he is standing with his paper away from his body shows that his body
language is open and he is going to retaliate. The close up of the teacher face saying “you’ve
failed” I felt really shows off the teachers character in great detail because his face is very
strongly set and as he says “you’ve failed” he looks down at the papers and doesn’t look at
the boy with shows the audience he isn’t interested in the boy, we then see a close up of the
boys face looking shocked as he thinks he hasn’t done anything wrong they used a shot
reverse hot here as we flick back to the teacher which really helps build up the tension as to
what will happen next, as the teacher says sorry he still doesn’t look at the boy this shows
his arrogance in thinking he knows best and being strict as when the boy says “excuse me
do you no who I am” we see the teacher for the first time having to look up which he hasn’t
done yet which connotes how the roles change between the two of them as now the young
boy seems to have the upper hand, the boy has retaliated with a strong answer and the reply
he gets is “I have absolutely no idea” and again the teacher looking down not taking an
interest which then goes back to the role of the teacher being athoritive and controlling the
situation again. The student here has no respect for the teacher which shows his true colors’
as he replies with “good” in a very cocky way and places his paper in the pile, the teacher us
taken by shock as he has been stood up to by a pupil as we see from the medium close up
as he seems to jump back a bit in shock, the pupil then walks off with the teachers apple and
usually students that are very good at school give the teacher the apple but not this one he
takes it and by biting into the apple we really see how he rubs it in the teachers face and the
close up of the teacher before he walks out shows how shocked he is.
