2. Beginning my Internship
• Began on May 9, 2014 with a formal orientation and company overview
• Excited to be starting an internship on the flipside of my first one, which
was accounts receivable
• Excited to be located in a more urbanized area where this company was
closer the actual retail locations so I had a better understanding
• Planned on meeting new people and some people I knew from high school
and my university to be back in contact
• Desired to learn new accounting program software and to develop my skills
further in Microsoft Office and powerful business programs on my first day
• Enthusiastic to be part of a well-known design manufacturing company
3. Goals/Ambitions
• Planned to make the best of my summer by learning new skills in the
financial side of manufacturing and the company’s operations
• Anxious to learn what occurred on the other side of my first internship and
how our company as a customer expensed and paid out bills
• Wished to take what I learned from my first two internships and show what I
knew by applying my skills from service based and industry accounting
• Looked forward to making a difference for others by completing work that
they needed more time for and making sure they could rely on me
• Eager to learn new leadership skills and how to more formally show
examples of my knowledge and dependability
4. Duties and Responsibilities
• Received electronic invoices from various vendors and made sure that they
were properly paid out by Sterling Jewelers in our accounting systems
• Properly keyed in employee reimbursement expense reports into our CSM
software system and filed them in the correct records in our accounting
document files
• Assisted in weekly check runs and issued checks to vendors and internal
associates in a timely manner
• Assisted other associates and team leaders with minor tasks, such as
dating spreadsheets and office filing
• Dated and filed vendor payment receipts in the proper order
6. Skills I Obtained
• Learning how to balance fast-paced summer classes with full time
workloads at the same time
• Learning new computer programs and learning new skills on ones that I
previously worked with in former internships and school
• Interpersonal relationship skills and professional manner communication
• Learning how to simultaneously work in a consistent and dynamic
environment at work and being prepared for change at any given time
• Learning how to grow and develop from constructive criticism and use
any kind of feedback to turn it into a positive experience
• Accuracy and attention to detail in a faster paced industry environment
7. Why I Enjoyed It
• Enjoyed receiving the chance to reconnect with former classmates and
colleagues from school
• Enjoyed meeting and having lunch with new people and officers of other
departments, such as the Vice President of the supply chain management
division
• Enjoyed getting the chance to go around the department and the different
buildings rather than sitting down for the majority of the day
• Enjoyed a consistent yet changing schedule that varied from day to day and
involved working with several different co-workers
• Appreciated getting the chance to be part of a well-known company and
work with a well-respected team within that company
8. Next Steps Afterwards
• Helped to push me in acing my remaining classes at school
• Helped prepare me with applying to potential entry level positions and
knowledge of what employers look for in job seekers
• Became more interested in the cost accounting and supply chain side of
business because of the people I interacted with at the company
• Became more actively involved in Accounting Association because I had
more to say about my knowledge of the accounting field
• Assisted in helping me land my first entry level job at IgnitionOne because
of my knowledge on both sides of the accounting “coin” (accounts
receivables and payables)
9. Putting it all Together : Conclusion
• Gained new skills overall technically, personally, and professionally
• Mastered new ways of how to meet people and to build relationships
• Enjoyed receiving a one of a kind opportunity to be a jack of all trades in my
internship, making a difference for both my colleagues and other employees
• Learned that balancing time for three tasks simultaneously (internship at
Sterling, externship at Crowe Horwath, and tax courses) is certainly possible
• Learned to be quick, swift, and accurate while learning to manage time
effectively and simultaneously
• One of the best summers I have had in my life because of this internship and
the other activities
