Use Conventions in Citing
Sources(EN8SS-IIIg-1.6.4)
Purpose of the Lesson
The purpose of this topic is to
introduce you to the different ways
of citing sources. Also, you will learn
how to properly acknowledge a work
which they used in writing their
research.
What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work
or ideas as your own, with or without their
consent, by incorporating it into your work
without full acknowledgement.
Plagiarism is the act of presenting the work of
others as your own. It is like “stealing” the works
of others and is considered a crime.
Questions
1. Where do you usually get
information for an assigned
topic?
2. What do you do with the
information you got?
1. Where do you usually get information for an assigned topic?
-Library
-Internet
-Interview
2. What do you do with the information you got?
-Copy the words verbatim (exact words)
-Rephrase (state the sentences in other words)
-Express your understanding of the topic in your own words
What is Bibliography?
A bibliography is a list of
bibliographical entries at the
end of your paper arranged
alphabetically.
What is Citation?
Citation is a way of acknowledging the works
of other people that we used in our study. We
cite or mention the ideas or concept that we
borrowed in crafting our works. These people
are not limited to authors or writers. They can
also be artists, educators, scientists and other
experts in their respective fields.
What is In-text Citation?
This kind of citation is used
if you acknowledge the
work of others in the body
of your text.
Examples of In-text Citation
Authors’ last name, year published and page
number
American Psychological Association (APA)
Format
APA is the style of documentation of sources used
by the American Psychological Association. This
form of writing research papers is used mainly in
the social sciences, like psychology, anthropology,
sociology, as well as education and other fields.
APA style (also known as APA format) is a writing
style and format for academic documents such as
scholarly journal articles and books.
Reminders
Bibliographical entries are arranged alphabetically.
Last names of authors are written, followed by the
initials of their first names. Use the symbol “&” instead
of the word “and” for references with two authors or
