- The target audience for the film is males and females aged 15-25 who enjoy horror and thriller films. Research found males prefer suspense while females enjoy unraveling mysteries.
- To appeal to the audience, the opening needed to introduce tension and suspense through the antagonist and flashbacks using different colors and sounds. Interviews provided feedback to emphasize these elements.
- The opening creates "visceral pleasures" by showing violence and "intellectual puzzles" by misleading the audience about who is the antagonist through the protagonist being tied up. Setting it in a school also helps the target audience relate to the location.
- Overall, the opening effectively draws in the target audience by including aspects they enjoy from research.
2. TARGET AUDIENCE
• Before we produces and made this film we did a lot of target audience research and
decided that our primary target audience will be males aged 15-25 and the
secondary target audience will be females between the age of 15 and 25. Both of
which will have an interest in horror and thriller films as that would be the reason
they are watching our film.
• During our research we found out that males watch and consume a lot more horror
and gory films than females however both of these enjoy the genre in question.
Males tend to prefer the suspense of horror films however females enjoy films that
they are able to unravel themselves and decide who the antagonist is.
3. TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH
• In order to appeal and please our target audience we need to make sure that the
narrative includes all of the things that they like to see.
• To do this, the opening of our film needed to maybe introduce the antagonist of the
film but the most important thing to happen is that it will need to create tension
and suspense that makes sure that they will want to come and watch this film.
• We conducted a on to one interview with Fran and Sophie and the reason that we
did this is so that we can get their thoughts and feelings about our opening which
made and gave us pointers on what would make it more desirable for them.
4. TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH
• The interview that we conducted made it clear that we needed to emphasise where
there is a flashback and the two different narratives and the sound that we used in
order to create tension and suspense. All of the things that they said we have used
to make our opening more desirable to the target audience.
• We took all advice into consideration and changed the sound used as well as the
way that we showed the characters in order to make it clear whne there was a flash
back and who was actually who, we changed the colours in the flashbacks which
made it a lot more clear to understand to Fran and Sophie.
5. AUDIENCE PLEASURES
1) Visceral Pleasures- This is when an audience is attracted to the physical effect they
get from watching a film, for example some audience members watch horror films
for the pleasure of ‘jumping’ or crying at the different aspects of the film, we
created this is our film by our protagonist being tied up, beaten, this pleases the
audience as the enjoy the aspects of horror seeing pain and blood which is the
aspect that we chose to emphasise in the opening. We showed our target
audience and they said that it was a shock that it happened but it was a good
shock and they enjoyed it meaning that we have successfully created visceral
pleasures in our film.
6. AUDIENCE PLEASURES
2) The audience may also experience a liking for intellectual puzzles in films. This is
when the audience gets a pleasure from ‘working our’ different mysteries and
problems of the narrative. Usually in thrillers or horrors this occurs when the audience
have to work our who the antagonist actually is as they may have been tricked into
thinking it is someone else who in fat it is not. In our film we did this by having our
protagonist being the one who is tied up and being beaten, this makes the audience
think about if he is the antagonist or protagonist, when we showed Fran and Sophie
they said that it was something they had to work out to understand but it was a good
piece of enigma to draw their attention to the film.
7. RELATE TO PRODUCTION
• Conventionally, a lot of horror films are set in remote places as it adds a sense of
tension to the film. we subverted this convention as the location for this film was in
a school. This meant that the people aged 15 who are still at school would be able
to relate to the film and would be engaged a lot more in the film as it may make
them think twice about things in the school and of course that is a goo effect of the
film.
8. CONCLUSION
Overall, I think that we did a very good job when it came to identifying the aspects of
films that the target audience like and then putting that into an opening for the film
to make it very effective in drawing in both the primary and secondary audience. We
did this in many ways creating different audience pleasures to keep them entice to the
film to make it an effective opening.
