Modifiers Fairly:modifies adjectives and verbs, doesn’t suggest a high degree Quite:higher degree than fairly, can be used with a/an+noun, comes before a/an if there is a gradable adjective or no adjective, can modify verbs and nouns as well as adjectives and adverbs Pretty:stronger than quite, suggests more than was expected, more informal than fairly and quite, used mostly in speaking A bit:same meaning as “a little”, when used when non-comparative adjectives the meaning is usually negative or critical, it’s impossible to say “a bit happy” “a little nice” etc. Really:to show emphasis, can be used with adjectives, adverbs and verbs, can be used with gradable and non-gradable adjectives Extremely/Incredibly/Terribly:to show emphasis, used like very, but stronger
