Pretty”
By paige erno
2. You need:
Treats- Make sure you have a lot of treats. It is best if the treats are small, good smelling and not
filling.
Leash- If your dog is hyper and jumpy, a leash will keep your dog from wondering away.
3. Word of Advice
While teaching a dog anything, it is best to do this is in a quiet area, with no distractions.
Distractions may make it difficult for your dog to learn.
Because the dog is learning from the “sit” position, this trick is easiest to teach your dog when
they already know the “sit” command.
4. Step One: Position your dog
Place your dog in the “sit” position, but be sure not to use the word “sit” during this step. Using
the “sit” command can very likely confuse your dog.
To do this with out using the “sit” command, slowly guide your dogs head backward with a treat
near their nose, doing this will force there body to go into the correct position.
6. Step Two: Guiding the dog
Using treats, guide your dogs head up.
As soon as your dog lifts at least one paw up off the ground, give him/her a treat.
Repeat this step until your dog fully understands what is being asked of him/her.
7. At this point...
At this point your dog should make the connection to sit up, when your hand (with treats) is
above them.
If your dog doesn't seem to understand, continue working on "Step Two".
REMEMBER: ALL DOGS LEARN AT A DIFFERENT PACE. THIS TRICK NEEDS TO BE PRACTICED
OVER TIME. YOUR DOG WILL NOT FULLY LEARN THIS TRICK IN ONE PRACTICE SESSION.
8. Step Three: No treats?
Try repeating "Step Two", with out holding treats in your hand while guiding your dog.
If your dog lifts his/her paws up, treat him/her.
If your dog doesn't lift his/her paws up, continue using treats.
9. Step Four: Using a que
ONLY DO THIS STEP IF YOUR DOG HAS MASTERED THE TRICK
Think of a verbal command, and/or hand gester to use as a que for this trick.
The command can be anything you want. Some common verbal commands are: "up", "sit pretty",
and "beg".
Continue practicing the trick, using the verbal command and/or hand gester of your choice.
Over time you dog with make a connection between the que you give, and the trick itself.
10. For best results...
Continue practicing this trick once a day over several weeks, or until your dog does the trick on
command.
Do not rush the process. Doing so can make your dog "shut down" and not want to learn.
Make sure you use treats to reward your dog after everytime your dog gets into the correct
position.
HAVE FUN!!!
