❑Nanotechnology is being used in several applications
to improve the environment. This includes cleaning
up existing pollution, improving manufacturing
methods to reduce the generation of new pollution,
and making alternative energy sources more cost
effective.
Applications
❑ Nanotechnology and Pollution Control:-Pollution
results from resource production and consumption,
which in their current state are very wasteful. Most
waste cannot be reintegrated into the environment
effectively or cheaply. The basic concept of pollution
control on a molecular level is separating specific
elements and molecules from a mixture of atoms and
molecules
❑ Nano remediation : -This is used for transformation
and detoxification of pollutants It is being explored
to treat ground water, wastewater, soil, sediment, or
other contaminated environmental materials.
❑ Air Pollution:-Air pollution can be remediated using
nanotechnology in several ways. One is through use
of nano-catalysts with increased surface area for
gaseous reactions. Catalysts work by speeding up
chemical reactions that transform harmful vapors
from cars and industrial plants into harmless gases.
Catalysts currently in use include a nanofiber catalyst
made of manganese oxide that removes volatile
organic compounds from industrial smokestacks.
Other methods are still in development.
❑ Water Pollution:- As with air pollution, harmful
pollutants in water can be converted into harmless
chemicals through chemical reactions.
Nanotechnology eases the water cleansing process
because inserting nanoparticles into underground
water sources is cheaper and more efficient than
pumping water for treatment
❑ Nanotechnology-based water purification devices
have the potential to transform the field of
desalination, for instance by using the ion
concentration polarization phenomenon .
Environmental Nanotechnology ❑ Producing solar cells that generate electricity at a
competitive cost.:-Researcher have demonstrated
that an array of silicon nanowires embedded in a
polymer results in low cost but high efficiency solar
cells. This, or other efforts using nanotechnology to
improve solar cells, may result in solar cells that
generate electricity as cost effectively as coal or oil.
❑ Increasing the electricity generated by windmills:-
Epoxy containing carbon nanotubes is being use to
make windmill blades. The resulting blades are
stronger and lower weight and therefore the amount
of electricity generated by each windmill is greater.
❑ Generating less pollution during the manufacture
of materials:- One example of this is how
researchers have demonstrated that the use of silver
nanoclusters as catalysts can significantly reduce
the polluting byproducts generated in the process
used to manufacture propylene oxide
❑ Cleaning up oil spills:- Using photocatalytic copper
tungsten oxide nanoparticles to break down oil into
biodegradable compounds. The nanoparticles are in a
grid that provides high surface area for the reaction,
is activated by sunlight and can work in water,
making them useful for cleaning up oil spill
❑ Carbon dioxide capture :-Before CO2 can be
stored in Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS)
schemes, it must be separated from the other waste
gases resulting from combustion or industrial
processes. Nanotechnology techniques to fabricate
nanoscale thin membranes could lead to new
membrane technology that could change that.
❑ Storing hydrogen for fuel cell powered cars:-
Using graphene layers to increase the binding
energy of hydrogen to the graphene surface in a fuel
tank results in a higher amount of hydrogen storage
and a lighter weight fuel tank. This could help in the
development of practical hydrogen-fueled car.
Conclusion
Nanotechnology’s potential and promise have steadily
been growing throughout the years. The world is
quickly accepting and adapting to this new addition to
the scientific toolbox. Although there are many
obstacles to overcome in implementing this technology
for common usage, science is constantly refining,
developing, and making breakthroughs.

Application of Nano technology in environmental issues

This includes cleaning up existing pollution, improving manufacturing methods to reduce the generation of new pollution, and making alternative energy sources more cost effective. Applications ❑ Nanotechnology and Pollution Control:-Pollution results from resource production and consumption, which in their current state are very wasteful. Most waste cannot be reintegrated into the environment effectively or cheaply. The basic concept of pollution control on a molecular level is separating specific elements and molecules from a mixture of atoms and molecules ❑ Nano remediation : -This is used for transformation and detoxification of pollutants It is being explored to treat ground water, wastewater, soil, sediment, or other contaminated environmental materials. ❑ Air Pollution:-Air pollution can be remediated using nanotechnology in several ways. One is through use of nano-catalysts with increased surface area for gaseous reactions. Catalysts work by speeding up chemical reactions that transform harmful vapors from cars and industrial plants into harmless gases. Catalysts currently in use include a nanofiber catalyst made of manganese oxide that removes volatile organic compounds from industrial smokestacks. Other methods are still in development. ❑ Water Pollution:- As with air pollution, harmful pollutants in water can be converted into harmless chemicals through chemical reactions. Nanotechnology eases the water cleansing process because inserting nanoparticles into underground water sources is cheaper and more efficient than pumping water for treatment ❑ Nanotechnology-based water purification devices have the potential to transform the field of desalination, for instance by using the ion concentration polarization phenomenon . Environmental Nanotechnology ❑ Producing solar cells that generate electricity at a competitive cost.:-Researcher have demonstrated that an array of silicon nanowires embedded in a polymer results in low cost but high efficiency solar cells. This, or other efforts using nanotechnology to improve solar cells, may result in solar cells that generate electricity as cost effectively as coal or oil. ❑ Increasing the electricity generated by windmills:- Epoxy containing carbon nanotubes is being use to make windmill blades. The resulting blades are stronger and lower weight and therefore the amount of electricity generated by each windmill is greater. ❑ Generating less pollution during the manufacture of materials:- One example of this is how researchers have demonstrated that the use of silver nanoclusters as catalysts can significantly reduce the polluting byproducts generated in the process used to manufacture propylene oxide ❑ Cleaning up oil spills:- Using photocatalytic copper tungsten oxide nanoparticles to break down oil into biodegradable compounds. The nanoparticles are in a grid that provides high surface area for the reaction, is activated by sunlight and can work in water, making them useful for cleaning up oil spill ❑ Carbon dioxide capture :-Before CO2 can be stored in Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) schemes, it must be separated from the other waste gases resulting from combustion or industrial processes. Nanotechnology techniques to fabricate nanoscale thin membranes could lead to new membrane technology that could change that. ❑ Storing hydrogen for fuel cell powered cars:- Using graphene layers to increase the binding energy of hydrogen to the graphene surface in a fuel tank results in a higher amount of hydrogen storage and a lighter weight fuel tank. This could help in the development of practical hydrogen-fueled car. Conclusion Nanotechnology’s potential and promise have steadily been growing throughout the years. The world is quickly accepting and adapting to this new addition to the scientific toolbox. Although there are many obstacles to overcome in implementing this technology for common usage, science is constantly refining, developing, and making breakthroughs. References 1. S. L.
