  4. 4. Introduction “Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles is the Use of biological routes such as those involving microorganisms, plants etc. for the synthesis of nanoparticles”
  5. 5. Why green synthesis of nanoparticles? PHYSICAL METHOD  time and energy consuming  synthesis at high temp. and pressure CHEMICAL METHOD  simple, inexpensive and low temp  use of toxic reducing and stabilizing agents makes it harmful •
  6. 6.  The progress of efficient green synthesis utilizing natural reducing, capping and stabilizing agents without the use of toxic, expensive chemicals and high energy consumption have attracted researchers towards biological methods  Enzymes, proteins, sugars, and phytochemicals, like flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, cofactors etc., mainly act as reducing and stabilizing agents

Different Green Synthesis Methods  Use of plant extracts Plant extracts i.e proteins etc are used to synthesize nanoparticles Example: Aloe vera synthesize Au nanoparticles.  Use of waste Waste material is used to synthesize NPS. Example: Ag synthesize from citrus peels.  Use of enzymes and microorganisms Microorganisms are used to produce NPs. Example: Ag nanoparticle synthesis by pseudomonas stutzeri
  9. 9. Green synthesis using plants extract mechanism:  A plant extracts is add to a metal solution  This mixture is stirred and observed the colour change  A colour change indicates the formation of nanoparticles in colloidal form.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using phlomis leaf extract  Leaves of phlomis were boiled and cooled to collect the extract.  This extract was added to silver nitrate solution.  The change from pale yellow and dark brown indicated the formation of colloidal silver nanoparticles.
  11. 11.  AgNO3 dissociate into Ag⁺ and NO3‾. Plant leaf contains high level of poly- phenols (Flavonoids). Phenolic compound has hydroxyl and ketonic groups which are able to bind to metals and reduce the metal. Plant extract give protein and enzyme to the AgNO3 solution in which Ag⁺ ions combine with the enzyme to form enzyme substrate complex. The enzyme released from the plant extract act on the silver ions and there is a release of silver nanoparticle from enzyme. That silver nanoparticle combine with the protein released from the plant extract and there is a formation of protein capped silver nanoparticles.
