allocation decisions within political, economic, and
social systems and institutions.
6. Advocacy happens in many places.
Local: city council, school board, mayor,
superintendent, elected officials
Regional: county council, county executive,
governing boards, elected officials
State: governing boards/councils, state agencies,
superintendent, legislators
7. Advocacy includes many activities.
• Letter writing, e-mails and phone calls
• Signing up for Children’s Alliance alerts
• Meetings and visits to educate
• Public speaking or testimony
• Letters to the editor and op-editorials
• Research, polls or policy briefs
• Media campaigns and PSAs
8. Advocacy versus Lobbying
Advocacy
• is a process of educating and enlightening
• informs on issue, need or benefit
• no mention of a particular bill or legislation
Lobbying
• is a direct approach made to legislators and elected
officials
• relates to specific legislation (with a bill #)
• asks for support/challenge of legislation
9. Ten Tips for Successful Advocacy
1. Use the official title in your communications. i.e.
Mayor____, Senator___
2. Be brief in your message by keeping it to 1-2 talking
points. (3 max.)
2. Personalize your message by sharing a story or a key
benefit to your program.
3. Use statistics and research sparingly… elected
officials love stories instead.
5. Steer clear of abbreviations and acronyms that may
be confusing.
10. Ten Tips for Successful
Advocacy
6. Invite the elected official to visit a program or
school. (Create an event!)
7. Always thank the elected official for their
continued support.
6. Legislators love hearing from kids…have the kids
write messages to your legislators.
7. Invite families to help write letters or visit
legislators.
10. The more heard from constituents about an
issue, the more likely they are to pay
attention.
11. Work with Equity in Education Coalition.
Works with the EEC to close the opportunity gap for
students of color.
