• Think about what you want 
your students to know,

after the course. 
• Create specific learning goals 
for your course.
DETERMINE ACCEPTABLE EVIDENCE 
In the second stage of Backwards 
Course Design, you should: 
• Think about how your 
students will show that they 
have mastered the 
knowledge/skills you want 
them to gain. 
• Consider a wide range of 
assessment options.
PLAN LEARNING ACTIVITIES 
In the final stage of Backwards 
Course Design, you should: 
• Design your learning activities 
and instructional strategies. 
• Think about what the best 
exercises for developing your 
students’ abilities might be.
THINGS TO REMEMBER 
• Design your course goals 
around what you want your 
students to understand and 
be able to do in the long term. 
• Don’t rely on just one type of 
assessment. 
• Give students a chance to 
practice what they have 
learned.
