The document discusses conventions used in the opening sequence of a media product intended as an urban drama. It begins with establishing shots introducing the main antagonist character as intimidating and violent, following conventions of urban dramas. While the location is unconventional, shots of alleyways and streets bring it into an urban setting. The opening sequence includes typical elements like production logos, titles with credits, and establishing the protagonist and antagonist characters. Music and clothing styles also employ codes common to the urban drama genre.
Media product opening sequence uses conventions of urban drama genre
1. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media?
By Curtis Price
2. • For my opening sequence I have tried to use typical
conventions for an urban drama. The main male
character, is shown to be intimidating, powerful and
violent, the typical conventions of the male protagonist
and enemy of main character.
• I have a used a conventional situation, of enemy wanting
to catch the enemy of himself for a drug related reason.
• Although the establishing shot is of a seaside location
which goes against the conventional locations, the
character is running in towards the city urban areas such
as the grimy alleyway and streets.

3. • I believe that my opening sequence is very
conventional, because it starts with showing the
production logo fading out and then fading in to an
establishing shot (conventionally the first shot). I also had
the opening titles in the conventional order. I also
introduced the protagonist and antagonist characters.

4. • Like a professional media product I have included in my
opening titles the names of the main actors, also the
people that also contributed to the making of the opening
sequence, editing, filming, director, producer, writer. For
no particular reason I went against the convention of
having the actors names appear in order of their
appearance because the actor name to appear is the
second character to appear.

5. • Conventionally every film has
a production logo at the
beginning of the film. When
creating my production logo I
wanted it to fit with the genre
of my opening sequence. As it
only included the text, I
created text, manipulating
each letter individually to give
it an urban graffiti look, to
suit the urban drama genre.

6. • The codes of a urban drama I used in my opening
sequence was using a track produced by an urban artist
Dot Rotten, that is of a grime genre.
• The characters were wearing clothes
classed as street wear, as they were
wearing trainers, hoodies and although not
made obvious, the antagonist was wearing
jewellery (earrings and a neck chain).
• Theses two codes match other films such
as kidulthood, adulthood and shank.
