1. In Praise Of Local 100
"Alabanza: In Praise of Local 100":
A Personal Dedication to the 43 Members of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Local 100
Whenever we hear about major tragic events throughout history that do not affect us personally, the media often chooses to focus on a small group
of chosen victims, however, we do not get to hear about those, who were less known to the public. One piece of literature that chooses to focus on such
a group of people is "Alabanza: In Praise of Local 100", which is a poem written by MartĐn Espada. In his poem, he chooses to write about the 43
employees, who were the members of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Local 100 (which was a division of a United States labor union
that represented workers of the...show more content...
First of all, one reason why the purpose of Espada's poem is to express his admiration can be found in how he chose to address the pride that the
members held in their hearts for their home countries. An example of this is Espada's various references to Puerto Rico, such as the Cape San Juan
Light lighthouse in Fajardo, Puerto Rico ("Cape San Juan Light" 1). One reference towards the lighthouse can be found in the fifth stanza of the poem.
Throughout most of the stanza, Espada describes the sound and impact of the plane making contact with the North Tower of the World Trade Center, in
which the Windows of the World restaurant was located, however, he also described how kitchen stoves were glowed, despite the electricity going out
in the kitchen (Espada 45â53). When expressing this, he chooses to use a metaphor to compare the warmth of the stoves to how the lighthouse
illuminated the night sea, during the Battle of Fajardo in 1898 ("Battle of Fajardo" 1). He writes "after the night burst the dam of day and flooded the
kitchen, for a time the stoves glow in darkness like the lighthouse of Fajardo" (Espada 50â53). Through his choice to connect the warmth of the stoves
in the pitch black kitchen, due to the

2. How to Live to Be 100
Life expectancy is the average length of time persons, defined by age, sex, ethnic group, and socioeconomic status in a given society, are expected to
live. The older population is the most rapidly increasing segment of the U.S. population. Since 1900 the number of older adults has increased over ten
times and their percentage of the population has more than tripled. This increase is projected to continue at a rate of 1.3 percent annually until 2010.
(Torrez, p.132) The number of ethnic minority elderly persons will grow much more rapidly than the number of White elderly people over the next 50

expectancy is 65 years. Their primary health problems in old age include adultâonset diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. Diabetes mortality is higher for
Latinos than African Americans, and Latino elders experience more diabetesârelated complications, such as blindness and kidney disease, than do
whites.
Latino elders were the least likely among all groups of older adults to utilize formal health care services. Latinos who speak primarily Spanish face
communication difficulties, which can negatively influence their perceptions of health care providers. Language and trust barriers combined with a
greater resilience on home remedies, folk medicine, and religious healing result in patterns of delayed diagnosis, which can negatively affect their
health status.
Asian Americans are the fastest growing ethnic minority group over age 65, due mostly to immigration rates. As with other groups, the oldestâold are

Asian Americans have a life expectancy that is longer than their counterparts in the United States. The risk of most diseases is lower among Asian
American elders than among other older Americans.

3. The 100 Essay
At the close of its second season, the CW's The 100 is making waves â the brutal postapocalyptic world liberally peppered with the deaths of young
teens didn't turn too many heads after season one, but the revelation of the canon bisexuality of its protagonist, Clarke Griffin, sure has.
Clarke spent approximately the last season and a half embroiled in one way or another with Finn, a (male) troublemaker with a heart of gold, sort of.
After they have sex one time, Clarke refuses to get into a real relationship with Finn or return his declarations of affection, although he's clearly still
important to her. Following Finn's death in Season Two, Clarke isn't concerned with getting back on the horse as far as dating goes; she's pretty busy

Initial takeaways from critics was that The 100 was "disappointingly familiar" (Starr). Clarke and Lexa's kiss, the first indication that their relationship
isn't platonic, doesn't come until very late in the second season. When it does come, it's a very brief moment â Clarke does kiss back, but she also stops
kissing about three seconds later, and tells Lexa "I can't." The implication is that Clarke means "I can't right now because my last love interest died
about five minutes ago and also I'm responsible for keeping hundreds of people alive even though I'm only 17," not "I can't because we're both
girls." (Rachel) Still though, viewers were hoping for a little more than the few seconds of blissful bi reciprocal feelings seen. Much has been said
about this show, and so much of it enthusiastic, that most people would be prepared for a fullâon relationship. What viewers actually got ultimately
amounts to a demonstration that our protagonist is bi, but the scene doesn't last long enough to do much more. What's more, Lexa and Clarke don't
exactly end the season on an amicable note. While viewers are cautiously optimistic about Clarke and Lexa's reconciliation, the fact remains that if
viewers had blinked several times, they could possibly have missed this

The movie WallâE by Walt Disney has greatly depicted this problem that is happening in our modern world. Though the society in the Axiom is not
the same as our society nowadays, we are heading there. Our social interaction are now becoming more reliant on technologies. People talking on the
screen day and night, without knowing that they are becoming detached from the real world. We start to lose our own feelings for each other, we start
to forget our own value in life. Thus, the realâlife interactions are on its way to become a strange thing because we do not want to see each other. We
created technologies so we can get closer to each other. Indeed, we created our own tragic flaw â we respect these devices more than we respect each

communicated without the screen in front of them. They felt to be real human beings again. When they have opened their eyes, getting away from
those technologies, they are happier than ever and nothing could distract them from living as realâhuman again. Without a doubt, technologies can be
such an interruption that are destroying the communication among humans nowadays. Distraction is one of the most detrimental effects of

Minecraft is a game where the player uses their imagination to shape the world around them using the resources they find. In the world everything is
shaped like a block or a cube, this includes the trees, the dirt, the water, the clouds, even the sun, everything. This simple game hasn't even been
released yet but has already sold over one million copies. Minecraft was created by one man, Markus "Notch" Persson, and this is his story. What
makes the story of Minecraft so unique is that it was created by Notch and only Notch. Notch had a job before Minecraft, working on games for a

comic strips about minecraft, leading to even further sales. Minecraft makes $250,000 a day and continues to do so. On June 13, 2011, Minecraft
passed 2.5 million sales. Today Mojang has 10 employees. Markus Persson, Jens Bergensten, Daniel Kaplan, Junkboy, Jakob Porser, Carl Manneh,
Tobias Mollstam, Aron Neiminen, Daniel Frisk, and Daniel Rosenfeld. These few people make up the team that continues to work towards
Minecraft's future. But with so few employees things take time. Even though the game has not been officially released, people who buy the game
get a copy of what it is right now as the updates are being pushed out. With such success Mojang is the target of some heavy criticism from blogs,
critics, and even their own fans. One speculation from fans is that Minecraft will be the company's 1 hit wonder. What happens if it truly is a one hit
wonder? Will the company go down under? Will it be the end of Mojang? Will they join a publisher in order to stay afloat and lose their title of
"indie?" Another speculation concerns Mojang's next game that has absolutely nothing to do with Minecraft, not even in the same genre. What if

"A Rose for Emily": Explain what we learn about Miss Emily's character in the story (not just what she does, but what kind of person she is). Use
specific evidence found in the story to support your conclusions. Be alert to the possibility that the narrator who reveals this evidence to us might have

In the poem "A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner stated that "another sad and tragic manifestation of man's condition [is] in which he dreams and

In her killing of Homer, she is holding onto the pastâ she is attempting to hold on to the relationship that she and Homer once had, or she wished that
she had. She keeps his corpse lying in bed next to her, which is implied when it was "noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head"
and a "long strand of ironâgray hair" (78). Emily's inability to let go of the past has been exemplified in the examples of her refusal to pay taxes and
her murdering of Homer. However, the true cause of her inability to let go of the past lies in her conflict with in herself.
Faulkner wrote "A Rose for Emily" with the intent to focus on the tragedy of man's inner conflict, as well as outer. The two examples given are perfect
in demonstrating these two types of conflicts. In the first, Emily is in conflict with her surroundings, in which the town officials are trying to tax her. In
the second, Emily is in conflict with herself. She "knew that you do not murder people. She had been trained that you do not take a lover. You marry,
you don't take a lover" (80). Emily tries to embrace the tradition and background of getting married, having a family, and being in love. However,
these aspirations soon caused her to break down when Homer was going to leave. These conflicts, most importantly the one within herself, strongly
impacted Emily to be unable to let go of the past. Over all, in "A Rose for
