• Col. (R) Reese Turner possesses over three decades of leadership experience gained in
the U.S. Army. As a civilian, he is now lending his leadership expertise as a board of
directors member of various nonprofit organizations in Louisville, Kentucky. Col. Reese
Turner also regularly attends the annual Leadership Louisville Luncheon.
Partnering with the Office of the Mayor, the luncheon invites the mayor of a major
American city to discuss challenges and solutions with the civic leaders of Louisville.
Houston mayor Sylvester Turner was the keynote speaker during the 2019 luncheon held
last August, which saw around 1,000 people in attendance. He spoke of the crisis of the
city’s largest water purification facility coming close to breaking down in the aftermath of
Hurricane Harvey.
After putting a team in place to keep the facility running, city officials were able to
prevent a potential public panic. It was made possible by everyone working together, not
with one “superhero” getting the job done. This teamwork approach, crossing
socioeconomic boundaries, is also what enabled Houston to address its multi-billion
pension problem and city road rehabilitation program, among other issues. Mayor Turner
believes that at the heart of humankind, people can come to agreement and work
together.
