1. EVALUATIONS
In our group we were given preliminary ta sk in order to see how well as a group we work also to give us a feel of how i t
would be to create a music video, such as learning how to lip sync and edit i t all together.
How did our preliminary exercise fit the conventions of a music video ?
-l ip syncing
Main star close up shots
Eye contact
Sepia tone (background colour)-use of mise-en-scene in r’n’b music videos dark colours evoke emotion.
‘Narrative in songs is rarely complete, more of ten fra gmentary, a s in poetry’ Andre Goodwin.
We did not do our video as explicit as most r’n’b vi deos but there is some sort of provocative dancing within our
video and beauty shots which agrees with Andrew Goodwin’s theory that every music video uses close ups on
main artist and voyeurism treatment to of women which is none as the male gaze to get an male audience.
We broke the conventions as our artist was wearing no make or provocative clothing and hair not done up.
EDITING
First we edit the lip synchronising with the track, so it looks like the person is singing in a music video. Then we
add effects in different for example fad in and fade out at the part of when the artist started singing. This is
because it emphasizes the video of being slow and moody. Another effect we used was making a quick shot
reversed artist whipping her hair back. This relates to Goodwin’s theory on relationship between the music
and visuals because the shot goes with the beat. Also the video links to Simon frith theory on conceptual. The
music video gives a sad mood because the tone of artist and the video is slow and gentl e. The video gives a
message about a woman who is talking about the pain she felt in the past with her boyfriend.
Credits- the reason why we decided to put our name at the beginning in order for people to know who made
this as in many hip hop video they always say who the producer of the music video is at the beginning.
IMPROVEMENTS
Make sure the whole set is clear of unnecessary objects e.g the pencil showing and lyrics on the
radiator
With editing we need to expand our knowledge as we only used the basics techniques that we knew.
We need to experiment with colouring of our video learn how to master that and make them look
more sharpen and clear.
Use different shots and not be afraid of coming out of our comfort zone and using different scenery
We also need a lot more practising on lip syncing and editing it well.
