MINI-LESSON | TEACHER-LED INSTRUCTION
○ The Learning Pathway is aligned to the TEKS schedule built at the beginning of the year. The teacher, if
necessary, covers the necessary TEKS at the beginning of class, before students split into their individual
Learning Pathways.
○ The teacher introduces new content in the mini-lesson or reviews previous content if students need additional
guidance.
○ Students write designated information into their Content Journal, which they can and will use during their
independent work in the Learning Pathway. The teacher already has the designated pages pre-written for
students to transfer to their own journal. The teacher may request that students write additional information.
CONTENT
JOURNAL
LEARNING PATHWAY PICKUP/CONTINUATION
○ The students break off into their individual Learning Pathway. While all students begin the year on the same
Learning Pathway, soon they begin to separate to their own paces.
○ Students are required to take:
■ A whiteboard and marker.
■ Their Content Journal.
■ Their current Learning Pathway sheet.
■ Their Assessment Journal.
LEARNING PATHWAY | TEACHER COACHING
○ Each TEKS carries multiple Learning Pathway modules, ranging from 2-15,
depending on the TEKS.
○ Students must work through each module until they reach 100% mastery.
IXL counts up to 100 with incorrect answers setting you back 2 points.
Once they reach 100% mastery they input that into their SmartScore slot
on their Learning Pathway sheet.
○ Each Learning Pathway Sheet consists of:
■ The Lesson Objective for that specific TEKS.
■ The Demonstration of Learning for that specific TEKS.
■ Powerful Words section. Students must pull the powerful words
from the lesson objective.
■ Module checklist. Students mark off each module as they move
through the TEKS.
■ Assessment score. (RMCity STAAR Practice).
○ It is here where the teacher offers the greatest amount of coaching.
Since students are moving at different paces, the teacher may be
instructing in several TEKS. If multiple students struggle with a similar
concept, the teacher may call them into small group instruction. If the
entire class is struggling, the teacher may instruct in whole-group.
○ After students reach mastery of every module in a specific TEKS, the
teacher provides them with access to take the TEKS assessment (RMCity).
TEKS ASSESSMENT
○ After students reach mastery in every module of the TEKS, they present the now completed LP sheet. After
teacher review, the student takes a 5 question assessment test (RMCity STAAR Practice). The test covers the
exact same TEKS the students were working through in their Learning Pathway (IXL).
○ Students answer and transfer the questions and answer choices to their Assessment Journal.
TEKS ASSESSMENT CONTINUED
○ For every incorrect answer, students must find their mistake and present the corrected solution to the teacher.
The teacher is also available to help if the student cannot find the mistake on their own. Students also write
corrections in their Assessment Journal.
○ Students who pass the test with at least an 80% will have their teacher sign them off to enter the next Learning
Pathway.
○ Students who do not pass the first time must retake the test. (Students are allotted 2 tries, after which they will
need to review the TEKS again.)
SIGN OFF & DATA WALL
○ The student’s final assessment score is written on their Learning Pathway and the Data Wall.
■ The completed Learning Pathway sheet is stored in the student’s Profile Binder.
CONCLUSION
The student continues by picking up the next Learning Pathway sheet.

PATHWAYCUSTOMIZATION
STUDY ISLAND LP | ALL SUBJECTS
1 2 3 4 5
In this stage the teacher
will be teaching to a
whole group. This will
happen everyday of the
week for all subjects. The
Learning Pathways will
happen twice a week
ideally during a
designated computer lab
time.
If the students are older
and there is enough
technology in the
classroom this can be
adapted for everyday
learning pathways.

Data Wall
Students will login to
Study Island and go to
the assignment that has
been created for them in
advance. An example of
this could be:
Brooklyn - Reading
The assignments will
have things that she
either needs to work on
or are new to her.
In this stage the students
will be doing the work
assigned to them. Ideally
they already know when
to try again on the
assignment if they didn’t
receive a blue ribbon or
to go to the teacher if
they have received it.
Once the teacher has
been told that they have
finished the assignment
with a blue ribbon then
the teacher will assign a
Study Island Assessment
that they can either
create or use from the
system.
Once the student has
finished the assessment
the teacher will sign off
on the topic or tell them
that they need to start
back at stage 3
continuing with the same
topic for more practice.
If the teacher signs them
off then they will get to
have the blue ribbon
added to the data wall
and move on to the next
topic.
STUDY ISLAND LP | ALL SUBJECTS
STATION ROTATION LP | ALL SUBJECTS
1 2 3 4 5
At this stage in the
pathway, the students
will be in whole group.
The teacher will do a
quick 10 minute mini
lesson and then the
students will break off
into station rotations.
This will be done at the
beginning of class
everyday before station
rotation.

Students will be told by
day which file to go to for
their work for that day.
They will retrieve their
work during this stage
and go to their station.
There will be three file
Cabinets in the back of
the room each a different
color. The colors will be
for the different Tiers. To
keep from having the
students know the tier
have different colors like
blue, purple, and green.
All of them are seen as
high!
All the files will have the
same topics but they will
be leveled so that the
teacher can tell them
what color to take from
by day.
Whole group or
individual assessments
will occur as needed
based on the students
finishing their individual
work from the folders.
Once the student has
finished the assessment
the teacher will sign off
on the topic or tell them
that they need to start
back at stage 3
continuing with the same
topic for more practice.
If the teacher signs them
off then they will get to
have the blue ribbon

Students will be
assigned to work on this
based on data.
Older grades will login to
Google Classrooms
where they will keep
their data.
Younger grades will look
at their data binders
(some with help of a
teacher if needed) and
see what they need
improvement on.
After reviewing their
data, the students will
work based on data. For
example,
Those that need to work
on Information Text will
read informational books.
Those that need to work
on Literary Text will focus
on those books.
Raz Kid books will be
selected according to
student’s reading level.
(Students will have
different variations of the
book depending on their
progress.
After having completed
the Raz Kids Concept
Completion, the student
will then move on to
Study Island where an
Assessment will be
provided.
Students will complete
assessment and move
on to stage 5.
Once the student has
finished the assessment
the teacher will sign off
on the topic or tell them
that they need to start

Learning pathways model

  • 1. L E A R N I N G PATHWAYS Learning Pathway design based on Sudhir Vasal’s Model | DISD Presentation by the 2017 PL Cohort for TTU By Fredy Cisneros
  • 2. LEARNING PATHWAY SHEET Each Learning Pathway Sheet consists of:
  • 3. LEARNING PATHWAY TIMELINE MINI-LESSON LP PICKUP LEARNING PATHWAY TEKS ASSESSMENT SIGN OFF INDEPENDENT WITH COACHINGWHOLE-GROUP IF ASSESSMENT IS NOT PASSED THEY MOVE BACK TO THEIR LP. 1 32 4 5 TEACHER PROVIDES ASSESSMENT ACCESS AFTER COMPLETION OF LP STUDENT PROGRESS IS TRACKED ON THE DATA WALL.
  • 4. MINI-LESSON | TEACHER-LED INSTRUCTION ○ The Learning Pathway is aligned to the TEKS schedule built at the beginning of the year. The teacher, if necessary, covers the necessary TEKS at the beginning of class, before students split into their individual Learning Pathways. ○ The teacher introduces new content in the mini-lesson or reviews previous content if students need additional guidance. ○ Students write designated information into their Content Journal, which they can and will use during their independent work in the Learning Pathway. The teacher already has the designated pages pre-written for students to transfer to their own journal. The teacher may request that students write additional information. CONTENT JOURNAL
  • 5. LEARNING PATHWAY PICKUP/CONTINUATION ○ The students break off into their individual Learning Pathway. While all students begin the year on the same Learning Pathway, soon they begin to separate to their own paces. ○ Students are required to take: ■ A whiteboard and marker. ■ Their Content Journal. ■ Their current Learning Pathway sheet. ■ Their Assessment Journal.
  • 6. LEARNING PATHWAY | TEACHER COACHING ○ Each TEKS carries multiple Learning Pathway modules, ranging from 2-15, depending on the TEKS. ○ Students must work through each module until they reach 100% mastery. IXL counts up to 100 with incorrect answers setting you back 2 points. Once they reach 100% mastery they input that into their SmartScore slot on their Learning Pathway sheet. ○ Each Learning Pathway Sheet consists of: ■ The Lesson Objective for that specific TEKS. ■ The Demonstration of Learning for that specific TEKS. ■ Powerful Words section. Students must pull the powerful words from the lesson objective. ■ Module checklist. Students mark off each module as they move through the TEKS. ■ Assessment score. (RMCity STAAR Practice). ○ It is here where the teacher offers the greatest amount of coaching. Since students are moving at different paces, the teacher may be instructing in several TEKS. If multiple students struggle with a similar concept, the teacher may call them into small group instruction. If the entire class is struggling, the teacher may instruct in whole-group. ○ After students reach mastery of every module in a specific TEKS, the teacher provides them with access to take the TEKS assessment (RMCity).
  • 7. TEKS ASSESSMENT ○ After students reach mastery in every module of the TEKS, they present the now completed LP sheet. After teacher review, the student takes a 5 question assessment test (RMCity STAAR Practice). The test covers the exact same TEKS the students were working through in their Learning Pathway (IXL). ○ Students answer and transfer the questions and answer choices to their Assessment Journal.
  • 8. TEKS ASSESSMENT CONTINUED ○ For every incorrect answer, students must find their mistake and present the corrected solution to the teacher. The teacher is also available to help if the student cannot find the mistake on their own. Students also write corrections in their Assessment Journal. ○ Students who pass the test with at least an 80% will have their teacher sign them off to enter the next Learning Pathway. ○ Students who do not pass the first time must retake the test. (Students are allotted 2 tries, after which they will need to review the TEKS again.)
  • 9. SIGN OFF & DATA WALL ○ The student’s final assessment score is written on their Learning Pathway and the Data Wall. ■ The completed Learning Pathway sheet is stored in the student’s Profile Binder.
  • 10. CONCLUSION The student continues by picking up the next Learning Pathway sheet.

  • 12. STUDY ISLAND LP | ALL SUBJECTS 1 2 3 4 5 In this stage the teacher will be teaching to a whole group. This will happen everyday of the week for all subjects. The Learning Pathways will happen twice a week ideally during a designated computer lab time. If the students are older and there is enough technology in the classroom this can be adapted for everyday learning pathways. Whole Group Mini- Lesson Study Island Login (Assignment Access) Learning Pathway (Individualized Work) Study Island Assessment Teacher Sign off & Data Wall Students will login to Study Island and go to the assignment that has been created for them in advance. An example of this could be: Brooklyn - Reading The assignments will have things that she either needs to work on or are new to her. In this stage the students will be doing the work assigned to them. Ideally they already know when to try again on the assignment if they didn’t receive a blue ribbon or to go to the teacher if they have received it. Once the teacher has been told that they have finished the assignment with a blue ribbon then the teacher will assign a Study Island Assessment that they can either create or use from the system. Once the student has finished the assessment the teacher will sign off on the topic or tell them that they need to start back at stage 3 continuing with the same topic for more practice. If the teacher signs them off then they will get to have the blue ribbon added to the data wall and move on to the next topic.
  • 13. STUDY ISLAND LP | ALL SUBJECTS
  • 14. STATION ROTATION LP | ALL SUBJECTS 1 2 3 4 5 At this stage in the pathway, the students will be in whole group. The teacher will do a quick 10 minute mini lesson and then the students will break off into station rotations. This will be done at the beginning of class everyday before station rotation. Whole Group Mini- Lesson Break-Off into Station Rotation Individualized Work (Student Folders) Digital/Paper Assessment Teacher Sign off & Data Wall Students will be told by day which file to go to for their work for that day. They will retrieve their work during this stage and go to their station. There will be three file Cabinets in the back of the room each a different color. The colors will be for the different Tiers. To keep from having the students know the tier have different colors like blue, purple, and green. All of them are seen as high! All the files will have the same topics but they will be leveled so that the teacher can tell them what color to take from by day. Whole group or individual assessments will occur as needed based on the students finishing their individual work from the folders. Once the student has finished the assessment the teacher will sign off on the topic or tell them that they need to start back at stage 3 continuing with the same topic for more practice. If the teacher signs them off then they will get to have the blue ribbon added to the data wall and move on to the next topic.
  • 15. RAZ-KIDS & STUDY ISLAND LP | LANGUAGE ARTS 1 2 3 4 5 At this stage in the pathway, the students will be in whole group. The teacher will do a quick 10 minute mini lesson and then the students will break off into station rotations. This will be done at the beginning of class everyday before station rotation. Whole Group Mini- Lesson Raz-Kids Data Retrieval Raz-Kids Concept Completion Study Island Assessment Teacher Sign off & Data Wall Students will be assigned to work on this based on data. Older grades will login to Google Classrooms where they will keep their data. Younger grades will look at their data binders (some with help of a teacher if needed) and see what they need improvement on. After reviewing their data, the students will work based on data. For example, Those that need to work on Information Text will read informational books. Those that need to work on Literary Text will focus on those books. Raz Kid books will be selected according to student’s reading level. (Students will have different variations of the book depending on their progress. After having completed the Raz Kids Concept Completion, the student will then move on to Study Island where an Assessment will be provided. Students will complete assessment and move on to stage 5. Once the student has finished the assessment the teacher will sign off on the topic or tell them that they need to start back at stage 3 continuing with the same topic for more practice. If the teacher signs them off then they will get to have the blue ribbon added to the data wall and move on to the next topic.
