- Following a Civil War Henry's father had become the new King of England.
- When Henry VIII assumed power, he was concerned that if he passed away without a son. England may once more descend into civil war. This
meant that he must have a son.
- Catherine of Aragon was Spanish, she was unable to have a son during their 24 years of marriage; instead, she gave birth to a daughter named
Mary.
- Since Catherine was now over reproductive age, Henry had to get a divorce in order to have a son.
- Henry spent most of his time in abroad during wars, he needed to borrow money because weapons were expensive and he wasn’t able to pay for
them
- A big problem that henry struggled with was religious beliefs, he wanted to church to focus more on faith, religion instead of missions, journey
and statues, he also believes that he should have a voice in his religious beliefs.
- In 1533 henry got a divorce from his wife catherine and by the time he already found another person which was Anne Boleyn, but the pope
disagree about the divorce.
- Henry passed a law saying the he instead of being a pope he would be the leader of the church, with this it helped him in getting a divorce he then
married Anne Boleyn and later on they gave birth to a daughter named elizabeth.
- This also helped him in money problems, he was able to sell some church land, especially houses and religious community and they were often
given to lords because there rich enough so that helped him cover his war debuts.
- This also gave him a chance to change some religious beliefs, he allowed people to buy forgiveness and it allowed the bible to be written and
translated in English, but he left the church as it was but his son Edward changed it.
- However, Henry did not always get his way. For instance, Thomas Moore, Henry's advisor, was put to death because he disagreed with him. There
were 2 significant revolutions in the North and South of England. During his reign Henry harshly punished them by putting some 72,000 people to
death.
