County Extension Directors (CEDs) o Use data and awareness to develop needs-based
EI and health promotion
o Train, equip, and coach leaders with skills needed
for most effective relationships, and encourage
healthy lifestyle modeling
o Benefits performance and outreach efforts
o Using never-before-combined variables of Emotional Intelligence (EI), Physical Activity (PA), and
Dietary Quality (DQ) to form three measurement phases to bring EI (self-awareness, self-
regulation, empathy, motivation, social skills) and health awareness to Extension organization;
o Data are then used to inform development of emotionally intelligent and healthy leaders,
resulting in most effective leadership, relationships, and models of healthy living.
o MISSION: A healthier leader equals a healthier Extension
o CED duties require a great deal of
interpersonal communication and
collaboration
o Many CEDs have not been formally
trained in leadership competencies like
EI, which is the cornerstone of effective
relationships
o DQ and PA have been suggested as
precursors to emotional state
o Nutrition & healthy living are both
important outreach elements of
Extension; therefore CEDs should model
healthy lifestyles
o However, in most cases EI and health
status of Extension leaders is unknown
o In 3 clear phases one can measure and discover the
EI and health status of CEDs
o Phase I: Administer the International Physical Activity
Questionnaire (free) and Demographic Questions
o Phase II: Administer the 360° Emotional & Social
Competencies Inventory (cost) to a CED census along
with at least 5 peer & subordinate multi-raters each
o Phase III: Measure average CED food & beverage
intake using the online Dietary Screener
Questionnaire (free)
