2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy â some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donât like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 â add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
Youâve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
8. RESEARCH
Ideas from âonly humanâ video:
- Have the camera zoom in, then stop, then zoom in
again in time with the music
-Zoom in on the face while theyâre miming along with
the music
-Make the person in the video sing to the camera, crouch
down and sing in front of it.
- do lots of transitions between different shots
-filter the video? Make it grainy?
-Donât repeat shots have a different shot in every scene.

9. RESEARCH
Ideas from âsweet but psychoâ
-Have the video going at a slow pace in time with song
-Make the video blurred in parts to show the persons
emotions
-Make the camera swing a bit, when the
Singer swings then the camera swings with her.
-Make glitching effects on parts of the video, makes the
video look
More creepier and psychotic.
- use a darker shade of lighting to make the video look
more sinister. https://www.youtube.com/wat
ch?v=WXBHCQYxwr0
10. RESEARCH
Ideas from âpopular songâ
-Make the video Tim Burton style? Only black and white
clothing.
-Only have the person in the video sing certain lyrics and
look up to the camera when doing so.
-black and white filter on different scenes
-Close up shots on the face
-Slow motion affect when doing certain actions.
- Person has to look sinister in the video, gives of
Evil/insane vibes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmcdLOjGVzw
11. RESEARCH
Ideas from âRadioactive
- Lots of close up shots in the video to convey the
persons emotions in the video.
-High angle shots shows authority in the video and
establishes whoâs in control
- close up shot of the girls eyes and the angle itâs filmed
at gives her a mystery feel and shows she has her own
power over the audience in the video.
- The editing they use in the video is mostly straight cut
and thereâs some scenes where it blurs to focus which
gets the audiences attention.
Guy is sat above
everyone to show
heâs in control of
them and holds the
power.
12. RESEARCH
Ideas from âcounting starsâ
-Starts the music video of with a behind shot
-Band starts of in a dimly lit basement the lights could represent
the âstarsâ in the song.
-Uses a Steadicam shot which creates a sense of disorientation for
the viewer.
-always keep it a low angle shot on the main person in the video
- Does different actions that fit in with the lyrics
-Mostly every time the camera is filming someone theyâre facing
away from the camera.
-As the song speeds up make the persons actions more energetic
e.g. jumping up and down everywhere.
- Zoom in on different hand actions
-The band wears black while the people in the meeting are in
casual clothing.
- very dramatic

WreIhg
13. RESEARCH
Ideas from âPompeiiâ
-Starts of with a low angle shot that slowly zooms towards
the singer which shows heâs an important part of the video.
- focuses on one object and blurs the background out then
unfocuses.
- uses low key lighting which sets the tone and atmosphere
of the song and video
-At first the singer starts of relaxed and doesn't show much
emotion but as the song gets started heâs more panicked
and scared.
- transitions to singing the song and then to telling the
story of the song.
- shaky camera shots to follow the person running
-camera always shaking slightly to convey the persons
panic.
https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=F90Cw4l-8NY
14. RESEARCH
Ideas from âone last timeâ
-Filmed as a POV shot, following singer around.
-Singer never mimes the words to the song, itâs instead
focused on telling the story of the video.
-The music video is filmed in one shot by one camera
and gives the perspective of the man behind the camera
and the panic and fear thatâs happening in the video.
-Is visually presented as âfound footageâ different style
to how other music videos are made.
- When there is a high amount of action and tension in
the video the beat and volume is then heightened.
- The intertextuality in the video is the storyline of a
apocalyptic event, which gives a zombie horror movie
vibe.
15. POTENTIAL SONGS
- âI wanna get betterâ- the bleachers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8twpQTna_9w
-âsomeone to youâ- Banners
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeLaiL9tk68
-ârollercoasterâ-the bleachers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldk2pLyVZ4c
16. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
-With the camera shots when it gets to the chorus of the
song and repeats âbetterâ every time it repeats I was
going to zoom in, then stop, then zoom in again which is
a technique from the âonly humanâ music video.
-In my music video I was going to have the main person
only sing parts of the song and when they do I want
them to sing it into the camera, I was going to have the
camera on the ground facing upwards and the person
can crouch down and mime the song in front of it.
- I also want to get lots of close up shots of the persons
face and I want to capture the emotions of the face.
-I also want to add some different lighting effects in âlike
sweet but psychoâ did as well so it fits in with the song.
-Iâm also going to experiment with some slow motion
effects when the person in the video is doing something
dramatic I was going to slow motion it to make it look
even more dramatic.
-Iâm going to use the Steadicam technique to create a
sense of disorientation.
17. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
- I was planning to do lots of transitions between
different shots and filter some scenes in black and white
to see if it works.
- for the way theyâre dressed I was going to have the
patient dressed in a straight jacket and the doctor
wearing a lab coat with a clipboard.
- For the setting I would need a room that has no
windows in it to make it work and a small amount of
lighting.
- I was also going to experiment with different types of
camera shots and I want the video to be kind of horror
style.
-The song Iâm using is quite upbeat but I can make the
video fit in with song if I make it more horror/thriller
themed.
18. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
-Mental patient in a mental institution
-psycho person obsessed with someone
-Person very sick, lying on their death bed imagining themselves
getting better
19. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
- With the mental patient idea I only need to film it in
one room, so I could use a room from college which
saves me from from finding a plain room outside of
college.
-With my Sick person idea I could explore different ways
to film it as half the video would be filmed in their
âimaginaryâ world.
- The mental patient idea I would only need two people
to star in it.
-I could use all different camera techniques with my
mental patient one as if theyâre acting insane I need the
camera to follow all their insane movements with its own.
-With the psycho person obsessed idea I would have
more freedom as to where about I would film it.
20. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
-With my person being sick idea I would need to find a
plain bed and a plain room and I donât know where to
film it.
- To test out different color lighting, if I wanted it to be
red lighting I would have to find some red lights.
- I would have to go out and buy a doctors coat and a
straight jacket for my mental patient idea.
- I might not be able to book a room out to film my
mental patient idea, along with my psycho person idea as
well.
- With my psycho person idea itâs very limited and I donât
know how to expand on the idea.
21. FINAL IDEA â
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
âI wanna get betterâ- by Bleachers
Bleachers is an American indie pop band that are based
in New York city. The main artist of the group Jack
Antonoff use to be in another band called âfunâ but made
his own band âbleachersâ.
The music style Bleachers use it similar to the style of the
pop band âbannersâ use, they do a lot of upbeat songs.
Most of the bleachers songs are pop songs although
theyâre not mainstream, they do a range of indie pop,
alternative rock, new wave and synth pop.
22. FINAL IDEA â TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
- The meaning of the song is about someone who wants
to let go of their past as they regret what theyâve done
and they want to change or âget betterâ and theyâre
struggling to do that.
-The song is 3:30s long and near the end they have
nearly 30 seconds of a guitar solo.
-The pace of the song gets faster and faster as the song
goes on but it slows down near the end and then it picks
up a faster pace at the end of the song.
- The style of the song is more of a pop song, itâs very
upbeat and the lyrics are very fast.
23. FINAL IDEA â YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
- For my music video I want to do it about a mental
patient and theyâre trapped in a mental institution, and
they want to âget betterâ. However, no one will help them
the doctors just lock them up and leave them in their. I
was going to do a scene where the patient escapes their
straight jacket and attacks the doctor but the doctor just
straps them back down again. Near the end of the video
they just give up on getting better because they know no
one will help them.
- The genre of the video is going to be thriller style,
there wonât be much colour as they would just be
wearing black and white clothing and limited lighting.
25. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
26. I WANNA GET BETTER
Summary: Mental patient is stuck in a mental hospital and wants to
get better, but they canât.
Iâm going to make a music video about a mental patient, the song
is called âI wanna get betterâ so the patient will be singing the song
while doing some very strange actions such as jumping around
everywhere, scratching at the walls or just staring into space. I
would have someone playing a doctor as well and they treat their
patients horribly and I was going to do a small fight scene between
the patient and the doctor in my video that would hopefully fit in
with the speed and time of the song. For the intended outcome Iâm
hoping to make a music video that fits with lyrics of the song and
the pace of the song and hopefully it will make sense to viewers
about what I intended to do.
The pace of the song is very fast, the lyrics at the beginning are
sang very fast and the music in the background increases pace
towards the end of the song. The lyrics of the song can be seen as
quite depressing as it talks about regretting everything heâs done
in the past and heâs trying to improve himself and get better, but
the actual rhythm and beat of the song is quite uplifting and feel-
good. The tone of the song is quite energetic but also quite frantic
as well itâs got a very high rhythm and the song feels quite intense.
For the structure of the song it starts with a verse and then it goes
into the chorus and repeats it twice, then it goes into itâs next
verse and then back to the chorus it repeats that until 1:52 in the
song when the guitar solo comes in then it goes into a repeated
verse and then back to the chorus. For me the song is about a
person who regrets their life decisions and wants to change, but
Iâm going to try and change the story of the song into someone
whoâs mentally sick and needs to get help.
27. LOCATIONS
For my location I was going to film in college and see if I
could book out a room that has no windows in it. I only
need one room because I donât plan on filming outside
or really anywhere outside of the college as it wonât fit in
with my story for the video. A week before I plan filming
Iâll look round college for one of these rooms and see if I
can book one out for a few days.
I think filming in college is a safer option especially
inside because I wonât have to worry about the weather
or distance that itâs in. The one limitation I have is if I
canât book out any rooms, but if I canât I would just have
to reschedule the days I can film in there and it wonât
cost me any money to film in.
28. EQUIPMENT
For my equipment I would need a tripod and a camera
which I can book out from college, to get this I would
need to go onto the college website and go onto black
board and fill out a form. I would have to book this out 2
days in advance and I can only book it for 3 days. The
camera will be available and the tripod as well if I book it
earlier than everyone else. There is certain time slots to
pick up the equipment and drop them of so I need to
make sure I pick everything up in time and drop them of.
29. FACILITIES
I would edit my video in college with the apple mac
computers on premiere and after effects, I donât think Iâll
need any other facilities except from the college
computers.
30. PERSONNEL
CREW: My team is going to be me doing all the camera
work and directing the other members on what to do in
the video. Iâm going to get help from my two friends who
will be casting in the video as well as helping me come
up with other ideas on how to improve it. One member
of my team use to take drama so I think theyâre greatest
strengths will be acting in the video and theyâre available
Tuesdays and Wednesdays so thatâs when I plan to film
the video.
CAST: I wonât need any other performers as I only need
2 people which I can use my friends for and they will be
acting in my video as well, and I donât think I would need
any other help.
33. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you âpre-visualiseâ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ï Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ï Storyboarding
ï Shot list
34. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
35. CONCEPT BOARD
Mental patient in the
video will be wearing a
straight jacket, the
jacket will be a bit dirty
and look old to show
that theyâve been in the
institution for a long
timeThe room will be
completely empty
except from pieces of
paper lying all around
the floor it will also
have limited lighting
like the picture to set
the toneThere will also be a
scene filmed out in a
hall way where the
doctor walks down, the
hallway will be barely lit
and I was going to try
The doctor in the scene
will be wearing a doctors
lab coat as well as holding
a clipboard. I also wanted
the doctor to carry a tray
of food to give to the
patient as well
I was going to have the
patient write on the
pieces of paper left in
their room and they will
stick it to the walls, by
the end of the video they
36. COLOR/LIGHTING
- The room will start of gloomy but it will have light,
when it gets to the fight scene of the doctor and patient
rolling around in the room I was going to set up some
red lights in the corners of the room to create a sinister
vibe.
-The red lights will go of after the scene and will return
to the normal color room.
37. MISE-EN-SCENE
-Starts with patient in the room wearing a straight jacket
rocking back and forth.
-paper will be scattered across the room everywhere
-Not much light will be given off
-Doctor will be holding a tray of food along with a
clipboard.
- when the patient gets in danger the red lights will turn
on.
- The paper at the end will spell âI wanna get betterâ and
itâs spelt with a letter on each paper and it will be spread
across the wall.
38. FEEL AND LOOK TO THE
VIDEO
I wanted the video to look like a thriller video, Iâm going
to dim the lights down and when I edit it Iâm going to try
and put a thriller tone into the setting. The song is
upbeat but I think I can get it to fir in with the thriller
theme of my video.
- It will have low key lighting
-changes in angle shots
- The hairstyle of the patient will be all messed up and
along the video it will get messed up even more.
-The filmstoke would probably be fine grain as well
39. ACTING AS A MENTAL PATIENT
Running into walls
Laying down and
staring into space
Curling into a
ball at the edge
of the room
Randomly
screaming and
thrashing about all
over the floor
Talking to the walls
Screaming at security
cameras

40. DUTCH ANGLE CAMERA
SHOTS
- Close up
- Shoulder level
- Right Dutch
- Close up
- Low angle
- Left Dutch
Dutch angle used for unsettling moments
Pics from: âmission impossibleâ
- Long shot
- Low angle
- Left Dutch
Low angle left Dutch shot moves to low angle
41. BIRDS EYE VIEW SHOTS
In my music video Iâm
wanting to use a birds
eye view shot to show the
solitude the mental
patient is in, the birds
eye view shot can be
used differently
depending on what type
of mood you want to
convey.
42. THE DOLLY SHOT
The camera follows the movements of the characters and then in this
shot it transitions through the wall into the next room while the
characters walk through the door.In this scene the camera does a
behind shot of the character and
follows them from behind, which can
often be used in horror movies to
give a sense of someone following
the character
In this scene the camera does a
performance blocking shot where the
camera follows the main character and
then someone walks in front of the
camera blocking them from view, then
it goes back to following the
characters again
43. RACK FOCUS SHOT
Rack focus is when the camera focuses on one object or person
and blurs the rest of the scene out, and then unfocuses and
then focuses on something else
Rack focus is usually used to get the attention of the viewer
focused on the object or person that itâs focusing on. It can also
be used to show someone spying someone but it only lets the
viewer know and not the character.
44. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
45. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
46. LYRICSHey I hear a voice of the preacher from the backroom
Calling my name and I follow just to find you
I trace the faith to a broken down television
And put on the weather
And I've trained myself to give up on the past
'Cause I froze in time between hearses and caskets
Lost control when I panicked at the acid test
I wanna get better
While my friends were getting high
And chasing girls down parkway lines
I was losing my mind
Because the love, the love, the love, the love
the love that I gave wasted on a nice face
In a blaze of fear I put a helmet on helmet
Counting seconds through the night
and got carried AWAY
So now I'm standing on the overpass
Screaming at the cars hey!
I wanna get better
I didn't know I was lonely
'Till I saw your face
I wanna get better, better, better, better
I wanna get better
I didn't know I was broken
'Till I wanted to change
I wanna get better, better, better, better
I wanna get better
I go up to my room and there's girls on the ceiling
Cut out their pictures, and I chase that feeling of 18 year old
Who didn't know what loss was
Now I'm a stranger
And I miss the days of a life still permanent
Mourn the years before I got carried away
So now I'm staring at the interstate screaming at myself
Hey! I wanna get better!
I didn't know I was lonely
'Till I saw your face
I wanna get better, better, better, better
I wanna get better
I didn't know I was broken
'Till I wanted to change
I wanna get better, better, better, better
I wanna get better
Cause I'm sleeping in the back of a taxi
I'm screaming from my bedroom window
Even if it's gon' kill me!
Woke up this morning early, before my family
from this dream where she was trying to show me
How a LIFE can move from the darkness
She said to GET BETTER
So, I put a bullet where I should've put a helmet
and I crash my car 'cause I wanna get
Carried away
That's why I'm standing on the overpass,
Screaming at myself Hey! I wanna get better!
I didn't know I was lonely
'Till I saw your face
I wanna get better, better, better, better
I wanna get better
I didn't know I was broken
'Till I wanted to change
I wanna get better, better, better, better
I wanna get better

62. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

The LED lights around
the floor
Someone could trip
over them and hurt
themselves
Make sure the lights
are tucked away in a
corner until usage.
I am responsible, I
need to make sure
everything is set up
correctly
Camera not fixed
properly onto the
tripod
The camera can be
damaged
Make sure the camera
is secure on top of
the tripod
I am responsible for
the camera
equipment so I need
to make sure itâs set
up correctly.
The straight jacket
costume
The actor wearing the
costume could fall
over but because
their hands are
strapped they wonât
be able to stop
themselves from
falling
Only wear the
costume during
filming, when not
filming unstrap their
arms.
The actor is
responsible when
wearing the jacket
and I am responsible
to make sure they
arenât doing anything
they shouldn't be
while wearing it.
Equipment left about
in random areas of
the room.
The actors can be
harmed by tripping
over the equipment
and the equipment
can be damaged as
well.
Make sure the
equipment is all kept
together in one spot
and not spread out
everywhere.
I am responsible for
placing and looking
after the equipment.
The actions the actor
has to do in the
music video
The actor could be
injured when banging
their head against the
wall and rolling
around everywhere
Make sure the actor
isnât actually hitting
their head but doing
it so it looks real
I am responsible for
the filming directions
and the actions the
actor uses during the
video.
