10. ACID BASE BALANCE
• Rule of the B’s: If the pH and the Bicarb are both in the same
direction, then it is METABOLIC
• The only acid base to cause Kussmaul Respirations is Metabolic
Acidos (MacKussmaul)
11. SIGNS ANG SYMPTOMS
• As the pH goes, so goes my patient, except for potassium
• ( )ALKALOSIS = SEIZE and ASPIRATE = SUCTION MACHINE
• ( )ACIDOSIS = RESPIRATORY ARREST = AMBU BAG
12. CAUSES OF ACID BASE IMBALANCES
• LUNGS= RESPIRATORY = OVERVENTILATION (ALKALOSIS)
= UNDERVENTILATING (ACIDOSIS)
• IF NOT LUNGS = METABOLIC
PROLONGED GASTRIC VOMITING OR SUCTION = ALKALOSIS
For everything else that is not Lungs, pick METABOLIC ACIDOSIS
13. VENTILATOR ALARM SYSTEM
A. HIGH PRESSURE ALARMS
High pressure alarms are triggered by increase resistance to air flow
(machine is working too hard to get in the lungs)
3 Types of obstruction
- kinked tube
- water in tube
- mucus in airway
HIGH PRESSURE ALARM = OBSTRUCTION
14. B. LOW PRESSURE ALARMS
Triggered by decreased resistance to airflow and can be caused by
disconnection of the TUBING and OXYGEN SENSOR TUBE
LOW PRESSURE ALARMS = DISCONNECTION
