ated by Mr. MC Donald
• Modern Architecture(Art Deco) influenced by Shang Hai
architecture during the French Concession and also the the
design of ships
Design - Multi-level flat roof
- Rounded edges
- Vertical columns and a clock tower
- Horizontal cantilevered
- Aerodynamic
- Smooth exterior finishes
DIAGRAMATIC ANALYSIS
Although asymmetry can be
seen both horizontally and
vertically on both side of the
stadium but it is still balanced.
Streamline Moderne is signifi-
cant in the hall, offering the
users to view the stadium from
toptop to bottom in left and right
simultaneously.
SYMMETRY AND BALANCE
The repetition of the
columns and beams, which
are highlighted with yellow,
on the front facade is a
typical strong horizontal
and vertical elements of
Art Deco architecture and
thethe repetition of the
stacking roof also creates a
rhythm.
REPETITION AND RHYTHM
CIRCULATION
There are three types of circula-
tion where the first one, which is
bright yellow in colour, is the
primary circulation. The orange
yellow one is the secondary
circulation which is the entrance
and corridors and the bright
yellyellow one is tertiary circulation
which can only be access by staff.
The stadium is created with few
ovoids stacking vertically with the
size decreasing as it stacks higher and
a cuboid connected at the corner of
the ovoids.
MASSING
ORGANIZATION OF FORM
The massing of the stadium is a few
ovoids with a cuboid at the side of it.
Hence, it is creating a contrast
between two different form. Ovoid is
used frequently here because its
architecture is influenced by Art
Moderne architecture which they
emphasizedemphasized on curving forms, long
horizontal lines
The clock tower is placed on the
side of the stadium creating
contrast in height and form, hence
making it a focal point. This is to
catch the eye of people as the
stadium is built on a hill. The
towers is actually more of an Art
Deco trait which is a previous formDeco trait which is a previous form
of Art Moderne.
EMPHASIS
5. Flat Roof
Streamline Moderne architec-
ture usually have flat roof
Clock Tower
Vertical tower in Art Deco
architecture design is quite
common
Long Horizontal Form
Streamline Moderne architec-
ture emphasize on long horizon-
tal lines
Curve Facade
Common characteristic of Stream-
line Moderne design
The stadium is ventilated by ventilation
slits and porthole ventilation. There is
one long row of porthole ventilation at
the both side of the stadium. The
stadium’s architecture is influenced by
Streamline Moderne architecture
which sometimes emphasize on
nauticalnautical elements. Therefore, they
used porthole shape for the ventilation.
VENTILATION
NATURAL LIGHTING
Only the front block and upper part of
the stadium gets natural lighting
whereas the rest of the stadium gets
lighting only by artificial lighting. This
is because the athletes will be
disturbed by uneven sunlight. There-
fore, they used artificial lighting to
eveneven out the lighting in the stadium.
The yellow coloured part of the building
are the places where sunlight is able to
get into the stadium and the section
shows the shading of the stadium
without artificial lighting.
HIERARCHY
The roofs of the stadium is
built in hierarchy form, from
big to small upwards, help
shaping the visual of façade
and volume of interior of
stadium as well, to give a
sense of flow in space.
The front block will make someone
who have never been there before
to think that it is a circular building.
However, the moment the person go
into the stadium they will find that
they are actually in a long horizon-
tal space. This is caused by the
sweepingsweeping curved surface of the
front facade. The sweeping curves
of the stadium is a feature of the
nautical elements which can be
occasionally found in late Art Deco
buildings
