Caterpillars live near the plants they eat, hiding under leaves and coming out at night to feed. They can be found around the world except in very cold or dry desert areas. Caterpillars have 12 eyes on the sides of their head and use their thoracic legs to hold onto food while eating, using prolegs at their back end to climb.
