2. 2
We open close on the bass drum of a kit being played to the
tempo of the music before cutting to a close-up on the
snare drum of the same kit being played in time with the
song. These two shots are frequently interrupted by an
extreme close-up of the protagonist’s eyes until...
The bass guitar comes in and we abruptly cut to a close-up
of its strings being played (once again) in time with the
music.
Extreme close-ups of the band members (guitarist, bassist,
singer, etc.) continually interrupt this footage (with
editing that is in time with the music).
As the vocals come in, the narrative begins to play out.
I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
We see The Protagonist (17) preparing for the average day
at school: close on him buttoning up his shirt and tying
his tie. This sequence is often interrupted by additional
footage of the band and the extreme close-ups of the
protagonist’s eyes.
Lose sensations, spare the insults, leave them for another day
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Take the shock away
It's getting faster, moving faster now
It's getting out of hand
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs
It's a no man's land
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing
Getting frequent now
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Let it out somehow
Note: in some of the extreme close-ups the protagonist’s
eyes are narrowed to show variation; in one of them his
eyes shut, the idea being that these shots portray his
reaction to the mundane reality of everyday life.
Other elements of the sequence include The Protagonist
walking to school (or running, as well as The Protagonist
reading books (a different one in each shot).
3. 3
What means to you, what means to me
And we will meet again
I'm watching you, I'm watching
Oh I'll take no pity from your friends
Who is right? Who can tell?
And who gives a damn right now?
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
I've got the spirit
But lose the feeling
I've got the spirit
But lose the feeling
Feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling
This sequence repeats itself throughout the video as the
song intensifies, the duration of each shot becoming
shorter and shorter to build tension, continually
interrupted by footage of the band.
