Lyrical Analysis Song title – Sunshine Artist - AIM

This is common within Hip-Hop/rap music. Becoming to realise that the world isn’t as great as she use to think it was when she was younger. Talks about her Grandma (lyrical reference to family). This is a common convention with hip-hip music, they often make references in their songs to family/friends. The artist is comparing what things are like now in the present to how they use to be when her Grandma was her age. This way the artist is comparing the differences between the two.

By doing this we can get a better image of what she’s like (what 22 year old tend to look/act like)and maybe relate more to the artist. “ wit’, walkin’, sittin’” are all shortened terms for with, walking and sitting. By saying the words in a ‘slang’ manner it fits the conventions of a typical hip-hop/rap styled song. “… before all of this shit” – means that it is currently ‘shit’ and not very good, the artist is questioning what was there before because she has never seen it. Use of metaphor meaning that that things on the streets happen slyly and it’s something bad that you don’t notice happening straight away. In the next line she says ‘I see tree roots break through the side walk’ – in reference to the metaphor used this would mean that the streets she lives on are extremely bad and discrete. Mentions respect. This is another aspect of hip-hop music which is can be seen as a reoccurring theme. Hip Hop gangs respect their friends and family. The last three words (‘used to be…’) are repeated, and in the song this part fades out slightly. Repeating the words shows its importance and means the audience can think more about the meaning of the lyrics here. The artist is trying to get people to ‘imagine how it used to be’ so she can take them back to the good times.

[object Object],[object Object],Sunshine is related to happiness, brightness, positive feelings and warmth. ‘ Sunshine feels like a mile away’ – Everything good and happy feels like it is far away and not within reach. Sunshine is seen in Heaven (religious reference common in Hip-Hop music). To get to Heaven that would mean you would have to experience death. So the artist is explaining how bad the world is that she just wants to run away from it all and wishes there was a way to Heaven.

[object Object],[object Object],Uses the term ‘we’ which is seen as direct address and including the audience in the song so they can relate to it more. Doesn’t even talk to/know the people who live closest to her. “ da’ sex or da’ drugs” – Sex and drugs are common themes within the Hip-Hop genre. Another common theme and convention used it the use of slang words. Here the artist says ‘da’ instead of ‘the’. The artist is not happy with how she is and the way she is living her life. Seen as a constant battle in the mind.

At the end of the song the artist realises that she can’t keep running from her problems and from the harsh environment that she claims to live in. She must take action and do something about it. Speaks through personal experience so the audience can connect further with the artist. Even when she drinks she can’t escape reality and when she wakes up everything is serious again. There is no ‘drunken laughter’. There is no room for lust or anything else in her heart as there is so much pain and hurt inside her. Temporary release (such as drinking) wont help the pain, “it’s self destruction”. The pain is constant and ongoing and realises that you can just keep running away from the problems or trying to hide it away.
