2. Conventions
A similar colour scheme has been used on both
products. The use of black and dark colours in both
images with the contrast of white in the middle (t-shirt
of the skater, images of the band in gorillaz poster) is
used effectively to draw attention to the focal point of
the image. Since conventions of my genre are based
around skating, rebelling etc. the use of a skater on my
album advert gives the viewer an idea of what the album
will entail.
The use of two base colours gives an aspect of simplicity to the design and
this reinforces conventions seen on the left example. The use of writing t the
top with a more in depth description at the bottom is carried through on
both posters, including website and record label.
I decided to reveal as little as possible about the album, in keeping of
conventions with other posters. This allows for hype and talk to build up of
the album before it is released.
3. For my poster, it has
been set in a skate park.
This is a typical setting
for the style of music, as
punk-pop is generally
associated with skating,
drinking and antisocial
behaviour. This is shown
by the skater, skating on
a box with graffiti on the
box.
The colouring I have
used on this poster is
focused around giving
emphasis to the skater
in the middle, bringing
him into the focal point
as he is wearing white.
The style of clothes are
typical of pop-punk, as
he is wearing skinny
jeans, a baseball hat on
backwards and a short
sleeve, contrasting t-
shirt.
The fonts I have used are
typical of pop-punk as
media products from
this genre are typically
‘underdone’ and I
believe the lack of a
fancy serif font adds to
this effect.
The layout of the poster
is as well typical, not
giving much information
away and featuring a
picture in the middle
with upper and lower
texts, including the
bands label, website and
release date.
4. This poster features the
similar black background
with white, serif font
with a focal point in the
middle. The use of the
band in the middle, in
their signature cartoon
form resonates with my
poster, adding contrast
and bringing in a focal
point. The serif fonts are
similar to mine also, as
well as the layout
drawing the eye to read
the top, scan the picture
and read the bolder
release date. This band
have also featured the
band’s website at the
bottom of the advert.
The air of mystery is also
similar to my album,
featuring only the album
title and the album
release date. This seems
to be a conventional way
of designing posters, as
well as the top and
bottom layout to draw
the viewer in and
increase sale of their
media product. The
clothes featured in the
cartoons are reflections
of the personalities of
the artists and I believe
this is the same in my
advert, as the artist
featured is a skater and
pop-punk enthusiast.
