2. Distributing
• There are many different formats in which I
could choose to distribute my music video.
• However, I knew that for my music video I
wanted to distribute onto a website instead of
through using a DVD. This is because my target
audience is around the age of 13-19 and are
frequently seen on their phones and make good
use of networking sites.
• Therefore, I choose to look at four different sites
which cater for my needs of uploading a video
inexpensively and easily in the most productive
way possible.
4. YouTube
• This is the most well known site to use for distribution.
• The site was founded in February 2005, making it a relatively new
platform that provides billions of people across the world to discover
videos of all different genres and types.
• This site allows users to upload and view others videos. Much of the
content available on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals,
however, many big record compaies and other organisations have
been found to offer their own material on this site.
• The popularity of this site speaks for itself, having 300 hours of new
videos uploaded to the site every minute and 3 billion views per
week.
• The target audience of YouTube varies from a very young age to
very old depending on what it is you are looking for. As my target
audience is teenagers between the ages of 13-19 meant that
YouTube really caters for my needs as much of the younger
generation are frequently seen on their phones and using websites
such as this for entertainment.
• The most appealing part of the site however is that the site is
completely free, allowing me to upload and distribute my music
video completely free of charge including the options to share my
music videos onto social sites such as twitter for free too.
5. Vimeo
• This is a website that I hadn’t heard before, but once researching I
found it was a site was founded in November 2004, catering for
creative people who want to share the videos they create. This site
also advertises that it is “generally free from low quality distractions
that pollute YouTube’s search results”.
• Vimeo attracts over a hundred million users per month and already
has 22 million registered users showing the clear popularity of the
site.
• In addition, the site doesn’t allow negative/abusive comments onto
videos as moderators actively watch out for creating a community
that is safe to use and inexpensive.
• The perks of using this site is that there wouldn’t be any
inappropriate comments on my videos to persuade my audience
members from watching my video, and it is also made for those who
are creative and enjoy producing different videos.
• The site appealed to me as it is free as I was looking for, easy to
navigate and obviously very popular from the statistics. However, I
found the site was very similar to YouTube so it made me wonder
why I wouldn’t just use YouTube which is overall more well known
and used.
6. MySpace
• Originally a social networking site, then relaunched as a site which caters
solely to sharing and listening to music the website is well known by
teenagers who were previously using the site for networking.
• The site is unique in it’s layout and allows people to create their own page
custom to their own artist and share music in different formats such as mp3
and videos, allowing the user to write individuals to write posts on their
account.
• The site became increasingly popular with it’s new format, having 26.5
million unique users a month putting the site in front of competitor sites such
as Spotify which has 10 million users each month.
• The downsides of this site is that after the site changed from social
networking to a music sharing site, many users were annoyed as it meant
they lost their photos, games and friends that they had online meaning
some have distasteful opinions toward the site.
• Another is that the site isn’t simply catered for music videos but for audio
tracks and sharing YouTube videos, being a site that caters more for
promoting videos than uploading them in the best way possible. Therefore, I
thought this site would be good for advertising the video, but not to
distribute.
7. Dailymotion
• This is a well known site launched in 2005 which allowed
users to create and share videos.
• The site is available to people all around the world in 18
different languages, users being able to browse and
upload videos by searching tags, channels or user-
created groups.
• I found that once using this site there weren’t many
verified accounts of record companies which were
promoting videos, but more videos made by fans of the
bands instead.
• Therefore I decided this wasn’t a good site for me to use
as not having record labels meant that the site wouldn’t
be viewed as much as sites such as YouTube which
does.
8. Conclusion
• In the end I decided to go with YouTube to distribute my music video
as it’s the most well known site for sharing and browsing videos on.
• In addition, the site is regularly used by record companies and
upcoming bands themselves to share their music with a market
audience already available to provide videos for.
• The site is often the basis for others such as Twitter and MySpace
users often advertise their music on these sites through YouTube.
• Compared to the other distribution sites I have looked at, YouTube
was the most popular and on Twitter it was the site which many of
my followers often referred to when talking about music.
• This means that my target audience are most likely to discover the
music video on this site as they are accustomed to using such as
YouTube and will be more comfortable viewing the video on this site
as they know from previous experience that it’s a safe site.
