Habsburg refers to the time when Spain was ruled by
the Habsburg dynasty from 1506 to 1700
During their rule Spain was extremely influential and
powerful
Habsburg controlled territories from the East Indies to
the Americas, the low countries,
a part of modern-day Italy, and from
1580 to 1640 Portugal.
3. Habsburg
The name of the “Age of Expansion” was given to this
time because for over a century Habsburg Spain was
considered the worlds greatest power.
Under the later kings of this empire Spain had a
relative decline of power mainly after the second half
of the 17th century
4. Spanish Empire
16th century Spain settled the Greater Antilles in the
Caribbean and in North and South America
1519 the Spanish expedition of world circumnavigation
1522 Juan Sebastian Elcano achieved
a westward route to Asia and the Spice
Island
1565 the Spanish East Indies was established
5. Spanish Empire
In 1713 the War of the Spanish Succession end with
Spain giving up the European possessions
In 1741 Spain beat Britain at the Battle of Cartagena de
Indias which prolonged Spain’s authority in the
Americas until the 19th century
18th expansions reached Canada and Alaska
These expansions led to settlements
on Vancouver Island which led to the
discovery of archipelagos and glaciers
