This document provides an overview of the political, social, and economic systems that were prevalent in many parts of Europe prior to the 18th century, known as the Old Regime. It describes the society as being divided into three estates - clergy, nobility, and commoners - with an agrarian economy and absolute monarchs. It also discusses the systems of government that existed, including absolutism, English parliamentarism, and the Dutch Republic. Additionally, it covers the War of Spanish Succession over the throne following the death of the Spanish king without an heir, as well as the beginnings of enlightened despotism under the early Bourbon rulers in Spain.
