3. LEVELS AND AGES
Basic education in Bulgaria includes pre-primary school 0-6 years old,
primary school, from grades 1 to 4 (7 to 10) and pre-secondary school
from grades 5 to 8 (10-14). Then there’s the secondary school from grades
9 to 12 (15-19).
4. COMPULSORY STUDIES
Education in Bulgaria is compulsory from the ages 7 to 16 years old. The
headmaster determines their curriculum so all subjects are compulsory.
They can choose different extracurricular activities like art, acting, kind of
sport or even extra Maths classes. All of the subjects are important
because of the marks and GPA.
6. INFORMATION AND
ORGANISATION
- Roman rolland is known as one of the most prestigious secondary schools of Bulgaria.
- It was founded in 1966.
- They have an ethic code and rules to follow which are posted on their website.
- Nine classes are accepted in high school, with a total of 234 students distributed in three
classes for intensive English, German and French studies.
- The main purpose is that foreign languages are taught to students from all levels and
areas.
- Romain Rolland cooperates with organisations and institutions, in order to achieve their
own goals.
- It organizes and gives support to educational programs to help students improve their
knowledge in differents areas.
7. RIGHTS AND DUTIES
Rights:
- Students are not obliged to attend the same school through all education stages.
- Students who have some problem have the right to go to a special school.
- The students whose mother tongue is not the bulgarian one have the same rights that
the ones it is.
- Each student can choose in which extracurricular activities, that the school organize, to
take part in.
Duties:
- The school is compulsory between the ages of 7 and 16.
- The student must adhere to the school's rules.
- Not to participate in gambling, smoke, use drugs and drink alcohol.
- The student is not allowed to use cell phone during the classes without teacher's
permission.
- Not to absent without a valid reason.
8. SCHEDULE, TIMING AND CALENDAR
- Bulgarian school has two shifts
- The periods of study last 40 minutes
- In the first shift the students start at 7:30am to 1:10pm, but on
Thursday and Friday they finish at 12:25 because they have six
periods, all the other days they have seven periods.
- The second one is from 1:30pm to 7:00pm and when they have only
six periods they leave school at 6:15 pm
9. CURRICULUM SUBJECTS
The curriculum is structured into three components:
compulsory, elective and optional (it depends of the school).
Subjects fall into eight main areas: bulgarian language literature,
foreign languages, mathematics, information and technology, social
science and civics, natural science and ecology. After the 12 grade they
must do exams, the bulgarian literature exam is compulsory, the second
exam is compulsory too but they can choose the subject and the third
exam is voluntary.
10. PISA EVALUATION
Bulgaria, which ranked 45th among 72 countries based on ninth-graders tested and 6,300
students at age 15 taken part of the study. They completed several computer-based tests.
Almost 38 percent of Bulgarian students at that age do not meet the required level of
functional literacy in sciences, that means they are not able to comprehend the material,
read charts or make headway in those subjects.
Another thing is that a 41.5 percent of ninth-graders are functionally illiterate in reading and
42 percent had the same issue in mathematics.
11. OPTIONS AFTER COMPULSORY EDUCATION
There are fifty-one higher educational institutions in Bulgaria. There are
four types of higher education institutions:
