PARAFFIN WAX
Paraffin wax is a white or colorless soft, solid wax. It is made from saturated
hydrocarbons.
It’s often used in skin-softening salon and spa treatments on the hands, cuticles, and
feet because it’s colorless, tasteless, and odorless. It can also be used to provide pain
relief to sore joints and muscles.
Some salons and spas may offer a paraffin wax bath as part of their manicures and
pedicures but most offer it as a separate treatment, too. It generally takes around 30
minutes.
PARAFFIN WAX TREATMENTS
• Paraffin wax treatment is a treatment intended to moisturize and soften the skin.
They are most often applied to the hands and feet as components of manicures
and pedicures respectively.
• A paraffin wax treatment has many benefits and also provide relief to those who
experienced arthritis and fibromyalgia. This treatment can be done at home if
you have appropriate equipment.
• People who experienced seasonal dry skin often find these treatments to be
helpful and relaxing preventative measures. Paraffin wax treats and moisture
dry, cracked heels and knuckles.
What is it
In this module you will learned the steps in giving hand spa treatment using
paraffin wax.
Question:
What do you think is the importance of wax to hand treatment?
www.shsph.blogspot.com
6
The general formula for paraffin wax involves a carbon atoms and 2n plus 2
hydrogen atoms, where n is at least 16. For example, one of the hydrocarbons in
the wax might have the formula C31h64. In the manufacture of paraffin wax from
petroleum, different amounts of refining can change the mix of hydrocarbons and
thereby modify some of the wax’s properties, such as its melting point.
Manufacturers make the wax by removing the oil from a waxy byproduct of
petroleum distillation. In addition to its historical significance in helping to identify
the neutron, paraffin wax is used in many applications, including investment casting,
coatings, sealants, lubricants, candles and crayons.
BENEFITS OF PARAFFIN WAX
Paraffin has cosmetic and therapeutic benefits.
a. Cosmetic benefits
Cosmetically, paraffin wax is often applied to the hands and feet. The wax is a
natural emollient, helping make skin supple and soft. When applied to the skin, it adds
moisture and continues to boost the moisture levels of the skin after the treatment is
complete.
It can also help open pores and remove dead skin cells. That may help make the skin
look fresher and feel smoother.
b. Therapeutic benefits
Paraffin wax may be used to help relieve pain in the hands of people with:
a. osteoarthritis
b. rheumatoid arthritis
c. fibromyalgia
d. other joint mobility issues
It acts like a form of heat therapy and can help increase blood flow, relax muscles, and
decrease joint stiffness. Paraffin wax can also minimize muscle spasms and
inflammation as well as treat sprains.
Other Uses of Paraffin wax
➢ Often used as lubrication, electrical insulation and to make candles and
crayons.
Chemical composition

7
SIDE EFFECTS OF PARAFFIN WAX
Paraffin wax is tested in a lab to make sure it’s safe and hygienic to use on the body.
It’s completely natural and has a low melting point, which means it can be easily
applied to the skin at a temperature low enough not to cause burns or blisters.
However, if you have very sensitive skin, paraffin wax may cause heat rash.
Heat rash results in small red bumps on the skin that can be itchy and uncomfortable.
You should not use paraffin wax if you have:
a. poor blood circulation
b. numbness in your hands or feet
c. diabetes
d. any rashes or open sores
e. cuts or open wounds
f. inflamed/irritated skin or has decreased sensitivity
If you have a chemical sensitivity, you may develop minor swelling or breakouts from
the wax treatment. That’s because paraffin comes from petroleum products.
If you’re doing a paraffin wax treatment at home, take care not to heat the wax too
much, as it may catch fire. It should be no more than 125°F (51.7°C) when you start
your treatment.
Step 1: Melt the wax
The easiest way to melt paraffin wax at home is to use a double boiler. If you have nail
polish on, remove it before starting the process. Wash your hands well and dry them
with a lint-free towel.
To melt the wax:
• Add four pounds of paraffin wax to the top of a double boiler. Add water to the
bottom of the boiler and place it on the stove over low heat.
• Add one cup of mineral oil to the wax.
• When the wax is completely melted, take the boiler off the stove. Carefully pour
the wax into a greased plastic container.
• Wait for a thin skin to form on the top of the wax.
• Check the temperature of the wax with a thermometer. The wax is ready to use
when it reaches 125°F (51.7°C)
www.shsph.blogspot.com
8
Step 2: Apply the wax
Once the wax is prepared, it’s ready to use. To apply:
• Massage a few drops of olive oil into the skin of the area you’re going the treat.
• Dip your entire hand or foot into the wax and leave it in for a few seconds until
a layer forms over the area.
• Wait for the wax to dry. You’ll know it’s dry when the shine has faded. Once
dry, put your hand or foot back into the wax, going a little less deep than you
did before. This stops warm wax from getting under the previous layers of wax,
preventing burns.
• Repeat this process until you have at least 10 layers of wax on your hand or
foot.
Step 3: Bag your hand
Once you’ve applied at least 10 layers of wax to your hand, put a large plastic bag
over that. Then place it in an oven mitt or wrap it in a towel for 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 4: Remove the wax
❖ Remove your hand from the mitt or towel and the plastic bag after 15 to 20
minutes.
❖ Use soft tissue to remove the wax residue from your skin.
❖ Apply moisturizer all over your hand.
❖ After completing the treatment, cover the paraffin and store it in a safe place for
your next treatment.
To apply:
1. Massage a few drops of olive oil into the skin of the area you're going the
treat.
2. Dip your entire hand or foot into the wax and leave it in for a few seconds until
a layer forms over the area.
3. Wait for the wax to dry. ...
4. Repeat this process until you have at least 10 layers of wax on your hand or
foot.

How to Use a Paraffin Wax Machine?
There are several at-home remedies for all types of mild health concerns from
headaches to muscle aches and joint stiffness. Paraffin wax can be used to help treat
joint stiffness, ease pain and loosen hand and foot joints before exercise. You can use
paraffin wax at home in a machine that heats the wax in a shallow well. While there
are several types of paraffin wax machines, there are basic instructions for how to use
one.
Step 1
Place the paraffin bath machine on a flat and stable surface.
Place the paraffin provided with the machine into the tank of the
machine. If the machine comes with a plastic grill, place that on
top of the unmelted paraffin. Position the lid on top of the grill
and the paraffin.
Step 2
Plug the machine into an electrical socket. Leave the machine
plugged in for eight to 10 hours to allow the paraffin to melt
completely. Leave it plugged in at all times to keep the paraffin
liquid ready for use.
•
Step 3
Remove any jewelry from the body part to be treated, then wash
and dry the skin. Apply a liquid sanitizer to the body part and allow
the sanitizer to dry completely. Apply a lanolin-based lotion to
make the removal of the hardened paraffin easier.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
10
Step 4
Touch the edge of your palm to the melted paraffin to test that
the temperature is comfortable.
Step 5
Immerse your hand, elbow or foot slowly into the paraffin. Remove the body part and
wait for several seconds to allow the paraffin to cool and harden. Repeat this step from
three to 10 times to build several layers of wax.
Step 6
Cover your hand or foot with a plastic liner and a hand mitt
or boot, available as an accessory to the paraffin bath
machine. Allow the paraffin to remain in place for 10 to 15
minutes.
Step 7
Remove the mitt or boot, then take off the plastic liner and
peel the paraffin from around the treated body part. Dispose
of both the plastic liner and the used paraffin.
Step 8
Add more new paraffin to the bath machine to bring the level
of paraffin up to the fill level mark.
Tips & Warnings
• Consult your physician before using a paraffin wax machine.
• Never apply paraffin that has been used.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
11
• Before using the machine, test some of the paraffin wax on a small part of your
body to be sure you aren't allergic to it.
• Never apply paraffin to skin with wounds or cuts or is irritated.
• Don't touch the side of the machine because it may cause a burn.
• Don't use the machine if you have poor blood circulation.
2. Wash client's hand with lukewarm water and soap, and towel-dry before
and after scrubbing.
3. Apply appropriate lotion
By applying lotion, the removal of the hardened paraffin becomes easier
4. Determine and test appropriate temperature for heat tolerance of client.
Procedure in Testing Paraffin Wax Temperature
a. Heating your wax, test it on the inside of your wrist before use. Wax is at
an ideal consistency and temperature when it resembles honey and glides
easily over your skin.
b. Test the wax with your fingertip to make sure it's the right temperature. If
not, adjust the temperature.
c. The wax should not be uncomfortably hot on your skin.
d. If it feels too hot, leave it cool for a couple of minutes and test again on your
wrist. E. If wax is not spreading easily and has a stringy texture, it is too
cool and will need a bit more heating time.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
12
5. Soak hands for 4 seconds for 3 consecutive times in wax and wrap with plastic
gloves.
6. Allow the paraffin to remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes.
Wrapping the hand with plastic gloves helps trap the heat and better penetration
of the nutrient, relieving the pain and stiffness of arthritis.
7. Remove wax from hands according to manufacturer’s instructions.
a. Remove the mitt or gloves, then take off the plastic liner and
peel the paraffin from around the treated body part.
b. Dispose both the plastic liner and the used paraffin.
8. Apply hand softening product and massage according to prescribed
procedure.
9. Advise client after service on maintenance program.
10.Confirm and record client’s desired outcome.
You have now reach the end of the topic. After learning the procedures in hand spa
treatment, let us check what have you learned.

  • 10. 5 PARAFFIN WAX Paraffin wax is a white or colorless soft, solid wax. It is made from saturated hydrocarbons. It’s often used in skin-softening salon and spa treatments on the hands, cuticles, and feet because it’s colorless, tasteless, and odorless. It can also be used to provide pain relief to sore joints and muscles. Some salons and spas may offer a paraffin wax bath as part of their manicures and pedicures but most offer it as a separate treatment, too. It generally takes around 30 minutes. PARAFFIN WAX TREATMENTS • Paraffin wax treatment is a treatment intended to moisturize and soften the skin. They are most often applied to the hands and feet as components of manicures and pedicures respectively. • A paraffin wax treatment has many benefits and also provide relief to those who experienced arthritis and fibromyalgia. This treatment can be done at home if you have appropriate equipment. • People who experienced seasonal dry skin often find these treatments to be helpful and relaxing preventative measures. Paraffin wax treats and moisture dry, cracked heels and knuckles. What is it In this module you will learned the steps in giving hand spa treatment using paraffin wax. Question: What do you think is the importance of wax to hand treatment? www.shsph.blogspot.com
  • 11. 6 The general formula for paraffin wax involves a carbon atoms and 2n plus 2 hydrogen atoms, where n is at least 16. For example, one of the hydrocarbons in the wax might have the formula C31h64. In the manufacture of paraffin wax from petroleum, different amounts of refining can change the mix of hydrocarbons and thereby modify some of the wax’s properties, such as its melting point. Manufacturers make the wax by removing the oil from a waxy byproduct of petroleum distillation. In addition to its historical significance in helping to identify the neutron, paraffin wax is used in many applications, including investment casting, coatings, sealants, lubricants, candles and crayons. BENEFITS OF PARAFFIN WAX Paraffin has cosmetic and therapeutic benefits. a. Cosmetic benefits Cosmetically, paraffin wax is often applied to the hands and feet. The wax is a natural emollient, helping make skin supple and soft. When applied to the skin, it adds moisture and continues to boost the moisture levels of the skin after the treatment is complete. It can also help open pores and remove dead skin cells. That may help make the skin look fresher and feel smoother. b. Therapeutic benefits Paraffin wax may be used to help relieve pain in the hands of people with: a. osteoarthritis b. rheumatoid arthritis c. fibromyalgia d. other joint mobility issues It acts like a form of heat therapy and can help increase blood flow, relax muscles, and decrease joint stiffness. Paraffin wax can also minimize muscle spasms and inflammation as well as treat sprains. Other Uses of Paraffin wax ➢ Often used as lubrication, electrical insulation and to make candles and crayons. • 12. 7 SIDE EFFECTS OF PARAFFIN WAX Paraffin wax is tested in a lab to make sure it’s safe and hygienic to use on the body. It’s completely natural and has a low melting point, which means it can be easily applied to the skin at a temperature low enough not to cause burns or blisters. However, if you have very sensitive skin, paraffin wax may cause heat rash. Heat rash results in small red bumps on the skin that can be itchy and uncomfortable. You should not use paraffin wax if you have: a. poor blood circulation b. numbness in your hands or feet c. diabetes d. any rashes or open sores e. cuts or open wounds f. inflamed/irritated skin or has decreased sensitivity If you have a chemical sensitivity, you may develop minor swelling or breakouts from the wax treatment. That’s because paraffin comes from petroleum products. If you’re doing a paraffin wax treatment at home, take care not to heat the wax too much, as it may catch fire. It should be no more than 125°F (51.7°C) when you start your treatment. Step 1: Melt the wax The easiest way to melt paraffin wax at home is to use a double boiler. If you have nail polish on, remove it before starting the process. Wash your hands well and dry them with a lint-free towel. To melt the wax: • Add four pounds of paraffin wax to the top of a double boiler. Add water to the bottom of the boiler and place it on the stove over low heat. • Add one cup of mineral oil to the wax. • When the wax is completely melted, take the boiler off the stove. Carefully pour the wax into a greased plastic container. • Wait for a thin skin to form on the top of the wax. • Check the temperature of the wax with a thermometer. The wax is ready to use when it reaches 125°F (51.7°C) www.shsph.blogspot.com
  • 13. 8 Step 2: Apply the wax Once the wax is prepared, it’s ready to use. To apply: • Massage a few drops of olive oil into the skin of the area you’re going the treat. • Dip your entire hand or foot into the wax and leave it in for a few seconds until a layer forms over the area. • Wait for the wax to dry. You’ll know it’s dry when the shine has faded. Once dry, put your hand or foot back into the wax, going a little less deep than you did before. This stops warm wax from getting under the previous layers of wax, preventing burns. • Repeat this process until you have at least 10 layers of wax on your hand or foot. Step 3: Bag your hand Once you’ve applied at least 10 layers of wax to your hand, put a large plastic bag over that. Then place it in an oven mitt or wrap it in a towel for 15 to 20 minutes. Step 4: Remove the wax ❖ Remove your hand from the mitt or towel and the plastic bag after 15 to 20 minutes. ❖ Use soft tissue to remove the wax residue from your skin. ❖ Apply moisturizer all over your hand. ❖ After completing the treatment, cover the paraffin and store it in a safe place for your next treatment. To apply: 1. Massage a few drops of olive oil into the skin of the area you're going the treat. 2. Dip your entire hand or foot into the wax and leave it in for a few seconds until a layer forms over the area. 3. Wait for the wax to dry. ... 4. Repeat this process until you have at least 10 layers of wax on your hand or foot. www.shsph.blogspot.com

Grease plastic container f. Thermometer g. Olive oil h. Sealable plastic bag i. Towel or oven mitt j. Timer k. Tissue l. Moisturizer How to Use a Paraffin Wax Machine? There are several at-home remedies for all types of mild health concerns from headaches to muscle aches and joint stiffness. Paraffin wax can be used to help treat joint stiffness, ease pain and loosen hand and foot joints before exercise. You can use paraffin wax at home in a machine that heats the wax in a shallow well. While there are several types of paraffin wax machines, there are basic instructions for how to use one. Step 1 Place the paraffin bath machine on a flat and stable surface. Place the paraffin provided with the machine into the tank of the machine. If the machine comes with a plastic grill, place that on top of the unmelted paraffin. Position the lid on top of the grill and the paraffin. Step 2 Plug the machine into an electrical socket. Leave the machine plugged in for eight to 10 hours to allow the paraffin to melt completely. Leave it plugged in at all times to keep the paraffin liquid ready for use. • Step 3 Remove any jewelry from the body part to be treated, then wash and dry the skin. Apply a liquid sanitizer to the body part and allow the sanitizer to dry completely. Apply a lanolin-based lotion to make the removal of the hardened paraffin easier. www.shsph.blogspot.com
  • 15. 10 Step 4 Touch the edge of your palm to the melted paraffin to test that the temperature is comfortable. Step 5 Immerse your hand, elbow or foot slowly into the paraffin. Remove the body part and wait for several seconds to allow the paraffin to cool and harden. Repeat this step from three to 10 times to build several layers of wax. Step 6 Cover your hand or foot with a plastic liner and a hand mitt or boot, available as an accessory to the paraffin bath machine. Allow the paraffin to remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes. Step 7 Remove the mitt or boot, then take off the plastic liner and peel the paraffin from around the treated body part. Dispose of both the plastic liner and the used paraffin. Step 8 Add more new paraffin to the bath machine to bring the level of paraffin up to the fill level mark. Tips & Warnings • Consult your physician before using a paraffin wax machine. • Never apply paraffin that has been used. www.shsph.blogspot.com
  • 16. 11 • Before using the machine, test some of the paraffin wax on a small part of your body to be sure you aren't allergic to it. • Never apply paraffin to skin with wounds or cuts or is irritated. • Don't touch the side of the machine because it may cause a burn. • Don't use the machine if you have poor blood circulation. 2. Wash client's hand with lukewarm water and soap, and towel-dry before and after scrubbing. 3. Apply appropriate lotion By applying lotion, the removal of the hardened paraffin becomes easier 4. Determine and test appropriate temperature for heat tolerance of client. Procedure in Testing Paraffin Wax Temperature a. Heating your wax, test it on the inside of your wrist before use. Wax is at an ideal consistency and temperature when it resembles honey and glides easily over your skin. b. Test the wax with your fingertip to make sure it's the right temperature. If not, adjust the temperature. c. The wax should not be uncomfortably hot on your skin. d. If it feels too hot, leave it cool for a couple of minutes and test again on your wrist. E. If wax is not spreading easily and has a stringy texture, it is too cool and will need a bit more heating time. www.shsph.blogspot.com
  • 17. 12 5. Soak hands for 4 seconds for 3 consecutive times in wax and wrap with plastic gloves. 6. Allow the paraffin to remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes. Wrapping the hand with plastic gloves helps trap the heat and better penetration of the nutrient, relieving the pain and stiffness of arthritis. 7.
