DEFINITION OF TERMS
DISEASE A disorder of structure or function in a human,
animal, or plant, especially one that produces
specific signs or symptom that affects a specific
location.
FUNGI These are plant organisms, that live on dead,
decaying or living matter. Some fungi are capable of
causing serious infections, but some are harmful
and beneficial.

Information 1.1 NAIL DISEASES AND DISORDER
Nails can reveal signs to your overall health. Have you noticed some
abnormalities in your fingernails? There are problems in the liver, lungs and
heart that can show up in your nails. Do you bite your nails? Watch out and
learn what your nails will reveal.
Nail diseases are conditions of both the nail, and the surrounding skin
which result from bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Some conditions will
show a green, yellow or black discoloration of the nail, depending on the
nature of the infection. The main cause of infection is through damaged
cuticles and broken skin.
Many disorders can affect the nails. These can affect any portion of the
nail unit and can impact the appearance of the nail plate itself.
Diseases may be considered contagious or non-contagious. A disease
can become contagious or communicable when it spreads from one person to
another by direct or indirect contact. Some of the common contagious
diseases are tuberculosis, Common colds, ringworm, scabies, head lice, and
virus infection.
Coughing and sneezing, uncleaned hands, eating utensils and salon
equipment play a role in spreading diseases. Diseases that are not able to be
spread from one person to person considered are non-contagious. Genetic
diseases, cancers, mental disorder, autoimmune diseases and heart diseases
are some of the many diseases that are not contagious.
Given below is a list of the few important nail diseases and disorders and their
characteristics.
NAIL DISORDER CHARACTERISTICS
1. Blue nails It is bluish in color, may be attributed
to poor blood circulation or heart
disorder.
2. Brittle nails
It is a vertical splitting or separation of
the nail plate layers at the distal (free)
edge of the nail plate. Over exposure to
detergent soap and other chemical
solvents may attribute to the effect.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
8
3. Bruised nail It shows dark purplish (almost black or
brown) spots in the nail. This is usually
due to injury and bleeding of the nail
bed. As the nail grows, dried blood in
the nail bed will also go out.
4. Eggshell
nails
The nail plate separates from the
nailbed and curves at the free edge. It
may be caused by chronic illness of the
systemic or nervous origin.
5. Furrows These are long ridges that run either
lengthwise or across the nail. Some
lengthwise ridges are normal in adults.
These ridges increase with age and can
also be caused by psoriasis, poor
circulation and frostbite. Ridges that
run across the nail are caused by high
fevers, pregnancy & measles.
6. Hangnails It is a condition in which the cuticle
splits around the nail. Carelessness in
removing the cuticle, dryness, cutting
off too much may result in hangnails.
It may cause infection if not treated.
7. Leconychia
or white spot
White spot appears frequently in the
nails. They may be caused by injury to
the base of the nail. As the nail
continues to grow, these white spots
eventually disappear.
8. Pterygium It is an overgrowth of cuticle which
sticks to the surfaces of nail plate.
Carefully remove the adhering growth
by means of a cuticle nipper.
9.
Onychatrophia
It is describe as wasting away of the
nail. The nail loses its luster, shrinks
and falls. This can be caused by injury
to the nail matrix or by internal
disease.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
9
10.
Onychauxis or
hypertrophy
It is an overgrowth of the nail usually
in thickness rather than length. It is
caused by an internal imbalance, such
as local infection or heredity.
11.
Onychophagy
or bitten nail
It is a deformity of nail plate caused by
biting nails. It is an acquired nervous
habit which prompts the individual to
chew the nail or the hardened cuticle.
12.
Onychorrhexis
or split or
brittle nails
It refers to split or brittle nails caused
by an injury to the finger, careless filing
of the nails, excessive use of cuticle
solvents and nail polish removers. The
nails may be extremely dry because of
some granular disorder.
13. Ridges It is caused by uneven growth of the
nails, usually resulting from illness.
Buffing the nails with paste polish will
help remove ridges.
14. Treating
cuts
It is caused by an accident during
manicure service. Apply an antiseptic
immediately. Do not apply nail polish
on the affected area
15.
Koilonychia or
Spoon Nails
Nail with a concave shape usually
caused through iron deficiency
anemia. These nails show raised ridges
and are thin and concave.
16.
Corrugations
Wavy ridges caused by uneven growth
of the nails, usually the result of illness
or injuries.

Nail Diseases Characteristics Nail Diseases Characteristics
1. Onychomycosis It is an infectious disease caused
by a vegetable parasite. The onset
of the disease takes about two to
three months and the attack is
rarely on more than one or two
nails. The appearance of the nail
is frayed (worn out), brittle with
furrowed surface, opaque,
grayish, or yellowish in color and
is lifted-up by an accumulation of
epidermis underneath.
It also known as tinea ungums or
ringworm of the nails.
2. Onychia Is a term applicable to chronic
inflammation of the nail fold and
nail bed (matrix). It results from
the introduction of microscopic
pathogen through small wounds.
3.
Onychocryptosis
It is referred to ingrown nails
which affect the fingers and
toenails. It is marked by nail
growth into surrounding tissues
and may cause infection.
Incorrect trimming or shaping of
nails are often responsible for
ingrown nails.
4. Onychoptosis It is the periodic shedding of one
or more nails, either in the whole
or in part. This condition maybe a
symptom of a more alarm disease
such as syphilis or can result
from fever, trauma systematic
upset or adverse reaction to drug.
5. Onycholysis It refers to the detachment/
loosening of the nail from the nail
bed, starting at its distal and/or
lateral attachment. The most
common cause of onycholysis is
psoriasis.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
11
6.Onychogryphosis
or claw nails
It pertains to extreme thickening
curvature of the nails, usually it
is caused by varying degree of
hyperkeratosis (skin disease in
which the skin gets thicker) on
the distal portion of the nail bed
that detaches and lifts the plate
off the bed.
7. Paronychia An inflammation of the skin
around the nail caused by
bacteria. The symptoms are
redness, swelling, and tenderness
of the tissue surrounding the nail.
Information 1.2 SKIN DISEASES/DISORDER
SKIN DISEASE- any of the disease or disorders that affect the human skin.
SKIN DISEASES/ DISORDER DESCRIPTION
1. Contact
Dermatitis
• Appears hours to days after
contact with an allergen.
• Rash has visible borders and
appears where your skin touched
the irritating substance.
• Skin is itchy, red, scaly, or raw.
• Blisters that weep, ooze, or
become crusty.
2. Latex
Allergy
• Rash may occur within minutes
to hours after exposure to a latex
product.
• Warm, itchy, red wheals at the
site of contact that may take on
a dry, crusted appearance with
repeated exposure to latex.
• Airborne latex particles may
cause cough, runny nose,
sneezing and itchy, watery eyes.
• A severe allergy to latex can
cause swelling and difficulty
breathing.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
12
3. Eczema • Yellow or white scaly patches
that flake off.
• Affected areas maybe red, itchy,
greasy, or oily.
• Hair loss may occur in the area
with the rush.
4. Psoriasis • Scaly, silvery, sharply defined
skin patches.
• Commonly located on the scalp,
elbows, knees, and lower back.
• May be itchy or asymptomatic.
5. Vitiligo • Loss of pigment in the skin due
to autoimmune destruction of
the cells that give skin its color.
• Focal pattern: loss of skin color
in only a few small areas that
may merge together.
• Segmental pattern:
depigmentation on one side of
the body.
• Premature graying of scalp and/
or facial hair.
6. Wart • Caused by many different types
of a virus called human
papillomavirus (HPV)
• May be found on the skin or
mucous membranes.
• May occur singly or in groups.
• Contagious and may be passed
to others.
7. Keratosis
Pilasis
• Common skin condition most
often seen on the arms and legs,
but might also occur on the face,
buttocks, and trunk.
• Often clears up on its own by age
30.
• Patches of skin that appear
bumpy, slightly red, and feel
rough.
• May get worse in dry weather.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
13
8. Ringworm • Circular – shaped scaly rashes
with raised border.
• Skin in the middle of the ring
appears clear and healthy, and
the edges of the ring may spread
outward.
• Itchy.
❖ Self-Check 01:
Direction: Answer the following question briefly.
1. Information 1.3 A Healthy skin and Healthy nail
Question Answer
1. Take a look at your hands. Do
you have misshapen nails? If so,
which of these? Describe.
2. Have you experienced having
any of those skin diseases or
disorder? What did you do to
resolve your skin
problems/diseases?
Congratulations! You are already familiar with the different skin
and nail diseases and disorders.
It is now the right time to understand the characteristics of a healthy
skin and healthy nails.
A healthy skin is slightly moist, soft, and pliable (elastic); it is free from
disease and disorder and has a glow. To remain healthy, the skin must
maintain acid balance.
This acid condition is called an acid mantle which prevents the
growth of disease-causing bacteria on the skin. The acid mantle is made up
of a mixture of sweat and sebum (oil) from the skin.
The acid mantle of a healthy skin is said to have a pH of 5.5-5.6.
Acidity and alkalinity are measured by a number called the pH (potential
Hydrogen). Products used in manicuring/pedicuring are categorized as
alkaline or acid.
www.shsph.blogspot.com
14
❖ Self-check 02:
Direction: Provide answer to the following questions. Write your answer in your
activity notebook.
A. List down 3 characteristics of a healthy skin

1. A healthy skin has an alkaline pH of 7-14. True or False
2. When the acid mantle of the skin is disturbed, the
skin becomes sensitive.
True or False
3. The acid mantle protects the skin. True or False
4. A healthy nail is inflexible. True or False
5. Healthy nails are slightly pink in colour and are
slightly curved.
True or False
Information 1.3: BENEFITS OF HAND SPA
Take a look at your hands. Do you have misshapen nails? Before you proceed
with the relaxing experience of hand spa, let us identify first its beneficial effects
Below are some beneficial effects of hand spa:
1. Relaxes fingers, wrist and hand muscles
2. Helps loosen tight hand and muscles
3. Reduces scar tissue and adhesion that cause decreased finger and wrist
mobility.
4. Gives better mood
5. Lessens anxiety
6. Improves sleep and circulation of blood
Manicurists/pedicurists must be aware of the acidity and alkalinity
of the products they use during and after manicuring. Alkaline products
disturb the acid mantle of the skin causing it to become sensitive and
irritated and exposed to bacteria. A product is considered to have an acid
balance when it has a pH of 0-7; a product is alkaline when it has a pH of
7-14. Soap is alkaline having a pH of 9. Therefore, manicurist/pedicurists
should avoid over exposure of client’s hands and nails to soap or any other
alkaline product.
A healthy nail, which is an outgrowth of the skin, should be firm,
flexible and appear slightly pink in colour. It has a smooth surface and is
slightly curved. The average nail growth is .3125 cm per month.

A healthy skin is slightly moist, soft, and pliable (elastic); it is free from disease and disorder and has a glow. To remain healthy, the skin must maintain acid balance. This acid condition is called an acid mantle which prevents the growth of disease-causing bacteria on the skin. The acid mantle is made up of a mixture of sweat and sebum (oil) from the skin. The acid mantle of a healthy skin is said to have a pH of 5.5-5.6. Acidity and alkalinity are measured by a number called the pH (potential Hydrogen). Products used in manicuring/pedicuring are categorized as alkaline or acid. www.shsph.blogspot.com
